Wow another announcement. Didn't know this artist did 'A, A'. Didn't know 'They were 11' was her work as well. Great news of course.

About time.

In the Comics Journal issue #269 on shojo manga, Dirk Deppey did he very best to promote Moto Hagio hoping that the comics journal coverage will eventually get her a reliable publisher in North America.

It took around 5 years to find one and the irony is that publisher is Fantagraphics which is no one but Comics Journal publisher.

As the article mentions, VIZ did They Were 11 [and CPM did the anime version- which is still available on DVD, so get it before it's gone since it's pretty obscure] as well as A A' prime, and Fantagraphics did one of her short stories in their SHojo themed issue. I guess this grew out of that issue, which Thorn had a hand in, interviewing her and compiling a small artbook section.
Glad to see them tackling a full line of titles- I'm guessing there'll be lots to offer for manga fans looking for something different.

I'm sort of curious about Fantagraphics' quality. Do they have good translations? Paper quality? Size of the volumes?

Sorry for being insistent, but my OCD causes me to approach new publishers with a LOT of apprehension. I prefer to stick with the Big Five (Viz, TP, Del Rey, Yen, and DH).

Good question, see by yourself: http://www.fantagraphics.com/

Not a new publisher in the Comics field but certainly a sort of new one on Manga. I put them to the same level than Vertical.

Previously most of their manga output was porn under the Eros Comix line. Studio Proteus did the adaptations.

This is genuinely great news. The two titles they've announced so far both look really interesting, they've got Matt Thorn on board and it's always nice to see manga with decent production values making its way into the market.

Can't wait to see what other titles they're planning on putting out.

Matt Thorn's been translating manga for pretty much as long as there's been an English language manga industry and he has a good (and well deserved) reputation. Don't worry about it.

Given that both the releases they've announced so far are hardbacks, I'd guess they'll be about the same size as D&Q's gekiga stuff (i.e. slightly bigger than Viz's Signature line releases).

Fantagraphics have been in business far longer than any of the publishers you list. I don't really think a company that's been in business since the 1970s can really be described as a "new publisher".

I know what you mean. I'm OCD also, and I tend to stick with Viz and Tokyopop (though lately, nothing from Tokyopop interests me.) I'd say Del Rey, but I only purchase two series from them. (xxxHolic and Tsubasa Chronicle.) But I'm familiar with Del Rey. Not a big fan of Yen Press, and I only buy the CLAMP manga re-relases by Dark Horse, and the Trigun manga. But I know and understand where you're coming from. I guess minus Yen Press, I buy from the four other manga companies. I guess it counts even if I only purchase a few.

Although I don't know much about Hagio, it's interesting that Fantagraphics is publishing manga by Shogakukan. I had thought Viz was the big Shogakukan outlet.

Gotta say as a wannabe "puffed-up pseudointellectual pundit" this is really excellent news! YAY!!! Razz

Seriously though, with this along with their earlier announcement, I'm starting to realize who is going to be getting some of my manga budget. And now we know that the translations will be pure win. I'm really looking forward to seeing what they announce in the future.
