So is the story rating as good as he says it is? I haven't seen it yet myself, but am thinking about picking it up.

I thought that the reviewer had most of it right . I also think the character development, and back story are more interesting than the main story at this point in the series. I really did not notice the art flaws that he saw, and the time spent interviewing the samurai did not bother me. I would say that the rest of what he said seemed accurate to me. The negitive stuff he said, that I did not agree with, did not bother me, and I just took it as his opinion. As far as the rating is concerned I think it deserves an A for story so far, and I am lovin the artwork/animation. I have not viewed the film so I can not make a comment as to how accurate the plots are... The reviewer has seen the movie, this may have to do with the story rating I am only guessing though ?

I have seen the first disc and the review was pretty much right on. Samurai 7 is very good, but the problems the reviewer expressed were accurate. Still I recommend this very highly.

I've seen the first two episodes and have to agree with this review. The only part that bothers me is the line where he suggests that people who have put off seeing the original should pick up this anime. If you have not seen the original and consider yourself in any way a fan of asian cinema then you really owe it to yourself to see it. It's one of the best movies ever made, a film that has been remade many times before and never once have those remakes outdone the original. Don't get me wrong, the anime is definitely worth seeing, but it will never match the brilliance of the original.

I think this show should have never been made. They pretty much took the fame of Kurosawa's amazing movie and craeted a mediocre series for the anime mainstream.
Maybe on its own it has acceptable story and characters, but if compared with the original, it is, frankly, a piece of crap.

I've seen the fisrt five episodes, and while they were much better than I expected, it's really nothing special. Compared to the originals, the characters aren'y particuarly interesting or well done. It's fairly entertaining and I like the art style, but I wouldn't pay for it. A solid attempt though.

Shichinin no Samurai is one of the best movies, period, so its quite hard to live up to. That said, the other characters are somewhat on point, but I have to say that the portrayal of Kikuchiyo is great, and true to mifune's character (even though he is a machine).

As much as I enjoy the freewheelin' pompousness of statements like this, I feel I must kindly disparage your comments by telling you that at the very least this show will garner more interest in the movie you so obviously adore, even if it doesn't satiate your immaculate standards.
My interest level is quite high for this series. Even though I'm not a tremendous fan of the original film, I'm thinking that I'll enjoy the setting of this take on it far more. As for the 3D visuals, I'm guessing this show won't fall far from the Appleseed in that at some point two separate camps will be simultaneously shouting, "Durrr, it durn't look that purty" and, "It is...magnifique!"
*shrug* It looks good to me.

clearly i'm a latecomer to this thread, but having just recently picked up the complete Samurai 7 series i am compelled to post! this series is keeping me very happily entertained. how so?
1) it feels more exotic than most of the new titles out there - it feels more Japanese. i think that's mainly due to the background music and the dress/styles of the characters. the very sparse and simple drumbeat, with the lone flute mournfully floating through it is something i find extremely characteristic of "traditional" Japanese drama. many of the character's dress styles (aside from he Obi-Wan-Kenobi robe the main samurai wears) evoke the feeling that i am in a world far far away from my own living room. the face painting that many of the characters wear feels very Eastern to me, too.
2) it's an interesting story so far! the fact that the seven warriors are being sought after and assembled as the plot develops keeps me wondering what new fighting style will be introduced and added to the team.
3) the main guy, Kambei, is cool. he's not prone to any of the silly ham that seems to be in every anime series i've seen so far. none of the rants that are meant to be funny or ridiculous ever spoil the serious-as-death personality of this guy. there is some ham in the series, but not where the main guy is concerned.
4) i usually hate slapstick. always have, even as a little kid. i never found that stupid stuff entertaining in the slightest. how on earth i found myself liking the Kikuchiyo character in Samurai 7 is beyond me, but there it is - i do like him. maybe it's hearing that robotic voice of his in a way that, far from being logical and emotionless, is more like what you'd hear from a well-meaning but decidedly immature high-school muscle-head. i still can't figure it out, but i tip my hat to any show that can create a character that i like even though i have no business liking them.
so tonight i look forward to getting home to i can continue the journey - it's a really been a satisfying ride so far but should anybody still be checking out this thread, i am really interested in the original movie that's been mentioned - i'd love to know more about it. is it anime or live action? is the title "Shichinin no Samurai" as mentioned above?

Despite this show apparently being so big and expensive, I've never really heard any discourse on it from anywhere, so my interpretation was that it was easily forgettable and unimportant. And I say this as compared to much older shows that never got officially released still receive more attention.

I'm about halfway through the series and absolutely love it. Many years ago while working as a night security guard (college job) I was poking around channels on a portable TV we had at the guard station at 2am, not finding anything to watch. Then I found a station showing The Seven Samurai, and even though it was in black & white there was nothing else but infomercials on. And even despite completely hating "subs" I came away from that film thinking it was one of the best I'd ever seen.
But it's not fair to compare the anime to the film, as I think each is great in it's own right despite the differences. The stories may be similar but you have to watch the anime as a completely different beast.
Samurai 7 completely blows the genre away, clearly a cut (pun intended) above the kiddie-trash of Bleach and Iniyasha. It's more on the same level of say Claymore, with a large cast of interesting characters, side stories, and epic plot. Except the plot in Samurai 7 I think is even better. This anime tends to hit just about every emotion and should hit a "Masterpiece" rating for me assuming the ending keeps up with the show so far.

His rating is about right, to a certain degree, I'd even consider giving the series a grade of A because of it's interesting concept, lively (and entertaining) characters and a overall great plot.
Is it the best samurai anime I've ever watched? Well, that is a hard call since I've only watched two samurai shows that I can really think of (Rurouni Kenshin being the first.)
Granted, this isn't a show for everyone and some episodes are better than others. However, that is the case with other series as well.
I'd say this show falls more between the Seinen crowd and the action crowd, so the age range this most likely would appeal to is 13-35 (maybe less maybe more) and I am solely basing this off what I've have watched and the contents of the show.
However, if you really like Samurai Seven there is also a manga as well. Regardless, it's a pretty interesting anime and does have it's bouts of humor as well.

Actually I truly didn't. I was quite tired when I wrote that, I didn't even notice the date to be honest.
Sorry about that Key, I am so used to not looking at dates (somewhat) that I figured this was a current topic.
I wonder if even half of the original posters here still actively post here now and days? Given that it's almost been six years, it's hard to tell.
