Except for fan service, (yeah I know you don't pay attention to that) what scene did you recently encounter that had you hitting the backspace button on your DVD remote? I'd like to learn what you think was so unexpected you had to go back to see if you saw it right.

For example, this happened to me on Angelic Layer. It's not a story you would expect something like that.

The scene was where Misaki spoiler[trustingly hands her angel/doll Hikaru to the sister of a competitor. The girl pretends to admire Hikaru, while at the same time subtly sabotaging her so she would lose her next contest. In the story it is clear that the dolls are not supposed to have any life -- totally inert -- outside their playing field. Yet somehow the Hikaru doll produces a chillingly accusatory stare (her eyes open) while laying helpless in the enemy's hands. Then when she is back in Misaki's arms her expression changes again to something else harder to define. (resigned? betrayed?)] That scene had quite a different feel to it than all the story surrounding it.

I have others if anyone is interested, but what's yours?

I pay attention to fanservice. In reality, that's one of the few things that could make me re-watch a specific scene. There's a fine explanation for this though, that is, whenever I'm watching something really interesting, if I did that I'd probably lose interest(but I rarely miss something(it's just that my memory skips it later on Wink ) , although I watch mostly subbed anime). As for the fanservice, the most recent is most likely Weiss Survive. The episodes are extremely short(2.5 mins), and it includes a lot of comedy and fanservice(fanservice specifically aimed at males, or lesbians), and the reason I started watching this was the green-haired girl on the left(greeeeeen). That scene contained unexpected fanservice(yay, my "male spirit" is bumping). Well, probably a little different from what ya wanted, but this clears up any misunderstandings I might have caused in the past(such as looking like a smart fella).

But! Not all fanservice is about lewd stuff, don't forget that!

The famous table scene in Code Geass is the first double-take that comes to mind. I instantly pressed the rewind button on my DVD player to confirm my depraved imagination was not slithering into my reality, constructing one vile fantasy. spoiler[ Astonishingly, the image of a tabletop being violated was in fact there, forever changing my impression of what every day jobs a tabletop could be used for.]

This wasn't at all recent, in fact, it's a scene that I saw in my very first anime 24 years ago.

It was in Macross: Do You Remember Love? spoiler[It was during the very end battle of the movie in the scene where Hikaru is flying his Valkyrie through the tunnel leading to Bodole Zer's chanber. On his approach, Hikaru fires a volley of missiles, and for a very brief moment, you can see that one of the missiles is painted like a Budweiser can. I remember rewinding the tape to make sure I had really seen that Budweiser missile. What made that scene special for me all those years ago is the fact that I didn't know any other anime fans, or anyone that's seen the movie tell me that it was there.]

I haven't been watching much anime recently, but I rewound the scene in Monster where Johann confronts Richard Braun about the event that got him kicked off the force. When the scene first finished, I sat there with my mouth gaping open for a while.

I second the Geass 'table-scene,' I went all like Shocked and Confused .

Another one was the infamous 'tie-scene' in the first episode of Noir. Seriously, it was understood that Kirika is a highly trained killer from the start, but even so, I was not expecting her to do such an... improvised kill. spoiler[Grabbing the guy's necktie while flipping over him, deliberately going off a ledge which dragged him to the ground, thus using her own body weight to snap his neck.] You can see it here, it starts at about 0:33. I guess being fashionable can be dangerous in a gun fight.

Another one would be from Shuffle!; what I like to call the "Laser-guided Box-cutter." Oh man, did they fudge physics badly with that one.

For me it would be the beginning of episode 3 of Serei no Moribito. After watching balsa battle the Mikado Regiment I immediately had to see the whole thing again. It had been a long time since I had seen a well choreographed battle fluidly animated. The mikado sent his strongest warriors not generic weaklings first. They attacked as a group. They did not talk in combat and used non verbal communication to coordinate their assault and they were relentless. It was also the first time that I saw what Balsa was really capable of. I think I watched it twice before continuing the episode.

One I think of recently was in Baka no Test no Shoukanjuu when I realised such scenes such as a fountain in the background shooting water out of the statue of a cheribs anus, that was quite a 'cheeky' sight.

Another one that comes to mind is one in Kure-nai, where the main character sudenly spoiler[goes into a trance and grows a spike] in the last episode and his graphics get increased. I wasn't sure what I had just seen.

In Durarara I had to re-watch one scene where four of the main characters are talking and suddenly spoiler[one is NAILED with a flying trash can.] Cue, WTH was THAT?!? and re-watching the scene. And after the second time, well, then it was funny and I've seen the gif of it too many times to count since. Very Happy

A Zaku II head on Zeta Gundam during one of the earlier episodes of ZZ Gundam. It didn't really have much to do with the overall plot of the episode, but it just kind of came out of nowhere.

It has been years since I saw it but the first real WTF moment of Elfin Lied is still memorable.

spoiler[It wasn't the slaughter of the soldiers that got me but the sudden death of the impossibly sweet and lovable clumsy office girl delivering tea that made me want to rewind and make me want to double check that I saw that right.]

I loved that episode - my favorite of the series. I watch it specifically from time to time because it has such a great fight scene, and I also adore spoiler[the attempted assassination with the embedded flashback] in the same episode.

Aside from that, just about all of Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei, because text kept flashing on screen faster than I could make it all out.

It was a scene in the 4th season of Bleach, and Renji blinked. I had to watch it again a couple of times to be sure.

This may sound odd to you, so let me explain. In America, all cartoon characters blink. Spongebob blinks. The little claymation figures on Robot Chicken blink! The Tick blinked, and he wears a mask over his eyes! But pay attention to anime once in a while, and you'll notice that they do not blink. So I scream at my TV whenever they do, because it is so rare.

Must be because of their big eyes. You know, I doubt their eyelids are long enough to cover that immense area.

Which reminds me of another case. Whenever the characters turn their heads, it's a rare case to actually see that motion. They usually start moving their head and before I have time to realize, the character's head is already facing another direction. So, I do think of that motion as something attractive, mainly when it's a well designed character(female, specifically).
