My first anime magazine was Anime insider.now all their is is protoculture addicts and shonen jump so there isnt much to choose from anymore.

The only magazine subscription I've ever had in my life was to Nintendo Power, and that's only because they sent it to me for free.
Why pay money for ads? That's absolutely stupid. If I'm going to pay for a paper product, it had better come ad free. I did download a free copy of Protoculture Addicts and I enjoyed what I read, but it seems the staff has had many difficulties to produce volumes. It's unfortunate, but by the time they throw together a new volume, most of the news is already out there. Magazines simply can't compete with the internet anymore. While some do their best to get "exclusives", the internet ensures I'm in the know the second a printed copy is uploaded and passed around. I'm reminded of a recent article People touted regarding some girl who was kidnapped years ago by proclaiming they had a picture of what she looks like now. The image was sent around the internet long before a single subscriber received their copy. Personally, I believe it's incredibly foolish for magazines to exist but I understand why some people feel the need to continue receiving them. After all, what's a digital file compared to actually holding something. ANN is my anime magazine. They're the only ones who get the scoops faster than most (unless you can read Japanese). |

I see what your saying dude but im kinda into the old fassion thing of just subscribing to a magazine or picking one up at walmart or something.but anime news network is very cool even though the forums are kinda strict they are so upto date on the news its awesome this is probally the best site for news but incase i missed something i like having magazines and the internet.oh i almost forgot there is also Yen Plus and Otaku usa.

When I was about 10-12 years old, I remember buying one of those magazines that features Dragon Ball nearly every single edition. I did have a small collection, even though I hadn't watched much anime back then, but I don't even recall reading the word "anime" in the magazine. I also remember that I tried to draw Dragon Ball characters while looking at the original pictures or the tv anime, though it didn't work quite well. It was also then that I came across images from Ah! My Goddess, and at that time I completely fell in love with Belldandy, so I guess I was destined to become an anime fan sooner or later, huh? It was about 6-7 years later that I finally watched AMG! and that was when I remembered the character from that magazine. I also planned on buying all of their past editions, but it wasn't long after that I completely forgot about any wish I had in life.

The first anime magazine I ever bought was Otaku USA and it is still the only one I read. I've tried Newtype and Protoculture Addicts and they bored me to tears. I enjoy the writers that are involved in Otaku USA and the fact that they try to be a bit more hardcore than the others and I think that's the real reason why it's lasted. The people who read Otaku USA tend to be the people who stay into the fandom and are basically committed to being an otaku. I have never seen a single boarder-line fan reading a copy of Otaku USA, they tend to not even know what it is because it doesn't get the same amount of shelf space.
P.S.: You might want to expand on your first post, explain why that was your first anime magazine and so on. I think it would help conversation in the topic if you did. |

I was 16 and my first anime magazine was New type USA, an amazing magazine... but sadly they are no longer in business.
 It was a pretty dark time for me and I have yet to recover.

Kawaii I'll never forget you. Especially that day when my Mom came back from work and hit my head with a colourful magazine about "This stupid Chinese porno-cartoons". I've always wondered how did she get to know about this magazine when there was no Net and no advertisements in TV about it. She was always tolerant for my hobbies, but even back then she liked to mock at them. Later I bought it myself, till the last one:) |

Well at the time i liked anime insider mostly for the upcoming anime and manga realeses section they had alot of realese dates in that magazine but it went out of buisness in june of 09.now the only one i read is otaku usa and some protoculture addicts but i have a subscription to otaku usa.

My first anime mag was Anime Invasion (later changed to "Insider").
I liked it well enough...and was sad to hear of its' demise in '09. |

I think my first anime magazine was a 2nd hand copy of Newtype (the Japanese Newtype, before they launched Newtype USA) because the Official Art section was on Cardcaptor Sakura. After that it was probably Newtype USA, but I have copies of Anime Insider, Animerica and even Animeplay. Currently I'm collecting neo, and I'm still getting Newtype and Megami to keep up with (pretty pictures of) the latest shows.

True - two of the magazines I wrote for about anime stuff - Anime Insider, then Geek Monthly - sank without a trace in 2009. There's still Impact and Neo over in the UK, and Anime Update in Australia, but it's an incredibly tough time for these non-digital survivors - and the journalists who write for 'em! 
Sad, too. I love holding a magazine, flicking through it, being surprised most times I turn a page, reading on the loo, and getting paper cuts (tho' not necessarily in that order)... That said, what was the first anime magazine I actually bought? Man, I can't even remember - maybe the Japanese version of Newtype? |

The first anime magazine I BOUGHT was Animerica back in the day. The first I read was actually ANN's good ole Protoculture Addicts. Which wasn't owned by ANN back then. Tower Records carried them so I'd always read the newest issues while looking for music. Had more limited income then. When I could afford a magazine I went with Animerica. Mostly because PA wasn't being carried anymore there nor did they have Anime Insider. Newtype wasn't even a thought yet so I went with Animerica. I enjoyed it and always kept up on it until the very last issue they published. After that I found PA again at stores and split my time/money between it and Anime Insider.

I'm sure it was Animerica. I remember years ago reading an article about the Peach Girl manga in it, which made me pick up the manga, which I enjoyed, & started my love of manga. I had a subscription to Animerica for years until they ceased publication. I then switched over to Anime Insider....I didn't have a subscription for it, but I was buying it most months before it stopped. Maybe I'm cursed? I never really got into NewType USA, though, and it stopped without me.
I haven't found anything else, so there's a definite hole in my life now. I've been filling that with the Lost magazine, but once the show ends, I'm sure the magazine will too. *sigh* |

I bought Animerica/America Extra off and on many years ago, but never found that one reliably enough to get it regularly. I subscribed to Newtype USA and Shoujo Beat until they went out, I picked up Anime Insider pretty often until it went out too. These days I get Otaku USA and Shonen Jump. My history with videogame magazines started with Sega Visions/Game Players, currently includes PlayStation magazine and Game Informer, and included far too many in-between to list out.
I still like my print magazines... as far as up-to-date news goes, yeah, they can be pretty useless. However, you get nice art, reviews, entertaining 'filler' articles (like 'a history of game controllers' or 'anime's most annoying lead characters' or whatnot.) And it's portable- it is nice to get off the computer every now and then, after all. For the record, I do still use my game magazines for news... simply becuase when I try to search for news on games I care about, I always find links that are months (or years) old, with no way to tell the site 'got anything newer on this one?' It's easier to just flip through the magazine. I don't really care if I'm not 'the first one' to know... I am in my lil' bubble of the world, I don't need more than that! |
