The price is a HUGE pity. I was so enamored with them until the end. The bent sword at store roof made me laugh. Good review as always Rob.

So was this a "it showed up in the mail" type of review or an "obsession with trading figures and gashapon" type of review? If it's the later you'll always get burned buying this stuff from domestic retailers who will always mark up prices twice on products (once for shipping from Japan and again for profit). Looking on HLJ these were 4,000yen for a case of 8 back in 2008 (back then that'd be about $40). Of course you'd be stuck with duplicates, but you'd at least get your money's worth and maybe even make a bit back off selling the rest.

I do like how the dioramas can interact with the separate gashapon set (which HLJ was selling at 2,000yen for 10 of 5 figures), I wouldn't mind seeing more features like that in other sets.

Rob, I don't know what your taste is for comedy, but I'll say that if you have any love for comedy anime you cannot go wrong with Gintama. Make it past the first 10 or so kind of meh episodes and then be ready for 180 of the best comedy episodes of anime you've ever seen - as well as the best drama and best everything - Gintama constantly flips genres on their heads and can completely become anything when it needs to be. It's easy to not see what makes the show great in the beginning, but it's as you go along that you get a feel for it and start to see exactly what it's going for. Gintama's biggest strength is in simply being so incredibly long that it can do anything and everything.

The first sign Elizabeth is holding says "俺の後に立つな" (おれの うしろに た・つ な, ore no ushiro ni tatsu na), which means basically "Don't stand behind me, dammit!"

The second sign says "ごめん下さい" (くだ・さい, gomen kudasai), which is "Pardon the intrusion" or "May I? (come in)", which Gintoki tends to say when he's kicking down somebody's door.

Just in case anybody wanted to know :)

Seconded on the giving Gintama a second chance! Very Happy

Hijikata in this is his Mayora 13 persona. Mayora 13 is a warrior OF LOVE who wields a giant mayo cannon. Like many things Gintama, it is both awesome and ridiculous! Very Happy

And very expensive, that would be why I don't have it. It seems like all of the Gintama stuff is more expensive, even the cheapest little trinkets I occasionally find at Kinokuniya are considerably more than say, Bleach or Naruto merch. Sad

Gintama is a good comedy for references of all kinds, and not all of it is Haruhi or other KyoAni series. The rest is puns, visual humor, some sarcasm, and a good deal of irreverent comedy. It's absurd, but not the the point of something like FLCL, where it can get overbearing and lose focus.

It also has one of Rie Kugimiya's best voice roles.

I would be willing to buy them if they were just a bit cheaper. Maybe if they're not imported, or sold at a convention? Who knows. Sometimes figures are way too expensive, but I can't stop collecting them (although I only buy the cheaper ones, only splurging a little ($25 for a larger one). The sign that Elizabeth was holding at the bottom said "Please excuse me!", and the bazooka in Hijikata's mayonaise was because Okita is always trying to kill him with a bazooka (surprise attack?), and Hijikata LOVES mayonaise (he is absolutely obsessed).

I love that figure set! I have the Kagura one. I am almost positive it was less than 500 yen (about $5), so wherever you bought them from ripped you off big time.
I saw them at a convention in the USA just this past weekend, too, where they were only $6 each.

Gintama is without a doubt the funniest anime I have ever seen so I enjoy collecting the cute figures~

I've scored a lot of reasonable Gintama stuff.
There were some blind box figures for $8 of Gin, Hijikata, Okita, Katsura & Takasugi just last month or so. Some cards that were $1.50-about the same as the One Piece cards also being sold at Mitsuwa. Trendy had a bunch of keychain chibis $5 a pop. Trendy also had the small plushies for $7. They had some blind box chibis for $5 about a year ago. Way back early in the anime Rising Sun had a 5 piece set of figures I picked up for $18.
You can find reasonably priced Gintama stuff.

Main character Gintoki comes with a swell miniature scooter which he appears to be leaning on but isn't.

Come on. If you investigated the series you HAVE to have seen something about Gin's scooter. It's like his love of sweets & his sword.

I'm not going to even try to tell you what these dudes are about; Gintama fans are welcome to help out in the comments. All I know is that the two warriors — Takasugi on the left and Katsura on the right, I believe — share the same base as far as possible away from each other. While this might illustrate some aspect of their relationship in Gintama, it just makes for an awkward gashapon. There's no way you can set this figure and have a decent view of both characters. They're both sculpted to be viewed head on, but since they're facing away from each other perpendicularly, it's impossible. Plus, Katsura's sword has been permanently bent by his trading figure box.

Gin, Takasugi & Katsura were all on the same side prior to all the aliens arriving. Katsura & Takasugi are both terrorists seeking to overthrow the current government, but employ different views on how to accomplish this. Takasugi's made attempts to kill Katsura

Aww, Rob, falling in love with Gintama isn't that hard. I'll give you an unconventional tip: check out the episode discriptions on wiki or CR, pick one that sounds funny to you, or better yet, one that parodies something you are familiar with, and give it a go. You already know the names and basic archetypes of the characters, so unless you jump into a serious arc, no other prior knowledge is really necessary. I personally love the Pheonix Wright parody and a particular episode about *ahem* the Shinsengumi cleaning their bathroom. The Golgo 13 parody (of which Hijikata here is alluding to-"Mayura 13" with Bazooka for assisinations) is hilarious. As well as the "Train Man" parody. Etc.

You don't have to buy the whole plot or every aspect of all its jokes to like Gintama. You just gotta laugh!

The figures look so cute. I keep thinking back to how I should have bought an Okita plush at Otakon when I had the chance, but I kept wondering "what do I need a plush for?" 'Till I stopped myself from buying it. Maybe another day, when I have room of my own...

Interesting! I think there's only a Kino around here though - and some Hello Kitty stores. Well, there IS a place out in a mall near here but they pretty much only ever have some Bleach, Naruto and Death Note stuff and they're primarily Hello Kitty. It might be different now that CR has Gintama. Last time I asked they said they don't generally carry merch for stuff that hasn't been licensed (even if there's a demand for it).

I told the girl that Viz has the manga and she was all like "... really?"Anime hyper

Edit: *google maps some things* Wait, when'd THAT store open!? I'M AT THAT MALL ALL THE TIME!
