Why don't we ever get the numbers for DVD's released in North America?

Good to see Gundam ranking so well, once again.

Perhaps because the distributors are way too secretive about this stuff?

There are ways to guestimate sales but it requires a lot of digging.

Distributors can't hide Point of Sale (PoS) transactions.
However, those companies which do track sales require a hefty fee for the data. NPD is one of the leaders, but I've no clue what the costs are for the data.

Wow. Just shows with the Gintama DVD that people really are willing to pull out all the stops for anything based around the Shiroyasha take, even though that special only consisted of a few mins of that as a tease.
Just makes you wonder what would happen if the Gintama movie was going to be based around that rather than a remake on a TV arc...

Some sales-addicted anime nerd should make this their other hobby and post regular updates on this.

But a good percent of anime isn't sold via PoS or isn't reported (Walmart) and the public has no way to get at those numbers anyway.

It is pretty much impossible without buying ICv2's thingy (which is just estimates) or access to Nielsen Videoscan which costs thousands of dollars.

I always thought it was the Japanese that were the sticks in the mud and super secretive? That's why I'm confused on how we get the Japanese numbers and not our own. Maybe it's because the Japanese sales dwarf ours and the US companies don't want their pride to be smashed?

Oricon publicly reports the top 10 every week with actual sales numbers for the top 3 or so. (Similar to how we get the top 10 NPD report for games every month.) And like NPD, various other publications pick up various other specific title numbers for their articles.
The reason we get the rest of the numbers is because people post the top 100 anime, which actually has tracked sales numbers, to 2ch. Also note that Oricon actually specifically tracks anime as a special category.
None of the above happens with the NA market. Videoscan never gives out the top anime releases. Rarely we get a leak of a single title or a company will send out a press release or make a positive comment. There are approximately 2 dozen titles out there which actually have leaked numbers available.
ICv2 also has their insiders guide and they publish the top 25 titles every so often, but they are really just estimations and don't give numbers at all.

Hmm. That was very informative bayoab. Thanks. I'm still curious why our numbers aren't published publicly, though.

*sigh* The one time I'd rather have Pixar do better on BD, since Biohazard is a POS.

Totoro is always on the list no matter what. I hope that it will happen for us eventually. As for those selling the older copies they can keep waiting for a sucker to pay $500.
