Your opening remarks about reviewing provide an interesting counterpoint to the discussion in the last ANNcast. Reviewers really need to be a jack of all trades, I think.
Whoa that room.  That's a lot of anime-wallpaper. And nice Hello Panda box--those are delicious. I had a couple hamsters several years ago too; that was before I was an anime fan though, so their names weren't anime-inspired (otherwise I'm sure they would've been).

Kitchen Princess. From the way you described it, they sound the exact same. The only differences is that KP isn't only about the sweets and has some good story in there (and recipes at the end of each volume). I couldn't even take a step into that room. There'd be an invisible wall stopping me as soon as a see one of those walls. I'd hate to see their basement. |

Yumeiro Patesserie makes me kind of want to check out streaming show since it's a cooking show.... though I dunno, might wait for the dvd.... |

Wait for... what? Yumeiro is a shoujo show aimed squarely at girls aged 6-12... Not only that, it's a cooking anime... It's also 50 episodes (and could get a second season, who knows?). There is absolutely no way this will ever be released on DVD in R1. Not unless some TV station in the US picks up the rights and dubs it, which is also pretty much impossible. If you want to watch it, watch it legally, streaming, because that's going to be your only bet. |

Wow Kayla, that's... something else. I don't want to be critical of someone's joy, but you've gone a teensy bit overboard. Mostly I fear the day that you decide to take those down, for what it'll do to the paint behind them. And yes, you will want to take them down someday. I know you can't conceive of it right now, but someday you'll be 25 and want something more tasteful in your room than every last pinup from Newtype. Splurge and get a few large, high-quality wall scrolls from your favorite series. It will look even nicer and be easier to switch around from place to place.
That said - I agree that Ghost Hound is a rental. It might actually be a re-rental for me (I watched this thing in fansubs long before it was licensed; in fact, I was pleasantly surprised something this odd got licensed), but you're right that by the end there's not much re-watch value, except to scare the bejeebers out of yourself from some of the creepier moments. And even then you have to put up with the out-of-date pseudoscience babble in between. Also, thank you for not doing a diabetes joke. My cat was just diagnosed with it and will probably die from it because he hates to get shots and we don't want to put him through getting them twice a day.

Does that mean something that's subbed will more than likely never make it past the rental shelf? You also listed other reasons why Ghost Hound wasn't shelf worthy, but it seems like you prefer not to buy things that don't have a dub? (I notice you like subtitled streams, so I'm guessing that you don't mind subtitles, just buying things without dubs?) |

OMG me too! *fangirl* Your whole description of Yumeiro Pâtissière made me think "I so know where you're coming from." I really hate watching streaming video, but I might have to give this a try anyway. It sounds like it'd be perfect for me. A Little Snow Fairy Sugar actually sounds like I'd enjoy it too, which is surprising. |

Reading that reminded me of a quote that I on a commercial that played during Grand Theft Auto: San Andres: "Celebrate with cake." Cooking based anime shows are for the most part off my radar, but now I feel like watching an episode or two now. I will probably give it a watch when I get home from work. |

I'd make it in, no problem, but I'd be a little uncomfortable. It's very nice for the 'wall collage' look indeed, but I've moved on from that particular style. Vashfanatic is right- someday you'll get a nice piece of art (wallscroll, framed print, something) and realize how nice it looks as art, not just as an expression of fandom. Start pricing paint cans and dropcloths... when it happens, you'll need 'em to fix up your walls.

Hmm. Well, it's of course your column so you can do as you prefer. I'd strongly cation against it though. The value of something in dollars is so subjective. I mean clearly the value of a show in any sense is already pretty subjective but there's still certainly some value in reading others opinions because you can't always determine it's quality until you see it. In terms of money though, there's literally no use in telling people what you would or wouldn't buy because that's going to 100% depend on the financial situation of the individual and assuming they have an idea of the quality they can determine if it's worth it in dollars simply by looking at the price. Personally, I think the best system would be one that doesn't take the concept of shelf worthy so literally. I've always thought of it is more of a general division between that which is very good, that which is not outstanding but worth seeing and that which isn't worth seeing.
Indeed. Personally though, I think Shirow is best when filtered though another writer/director. Especially in the case of GitS. He's great with the rough ideas and concepts but to be really great it needs to be refined and perfected a bit. |

Nice walls, Kayla. They're kind of similar to mine except even more so, what with filling up every available space, even the ceiling. I would probably put pictures on my ceiling too if it wasn't asbestos =P
And vashfanatic, I'm really sorry to hear about your cat =( My cats are old and probably won't be around much longer, so I know how you feel. |

My interpretation was that there was no incentive to watch the show more than once, hence renting over buying. I didn't think Ghost Hound was bad, and the audio certainly deserves some awards, but I sort of wish that Production I.G. found something else to use as their Anniversary Project. |

Actually, Sugar first says, "Waffo!" before she knows what a waffle is. I'm a big fan of this series (and the OVA) but I agree it's a bit too cutesy sweet for some folks.
