I wouldn't watch Fairy Tail simply because I heard Aya Hirano has a lead role. That's a dropped even before beginning.
And I guess I'll get there in about 40 minutes, but I'm slightly upset about the death of the OVA. Now they're just all addendums to TV series in order to sell more DVDs. Though, there still are quite a few interesting ones. Iseikai no Sekishi is more AIC Tenchi romp, and Electromagnetic Girlfriend was fairly good. And of course Gundam Unicorn is coming up, that should be a big OVA for UC Gundam fans and mecha fans alike. As for the season being shit, yeah, it is. I have some guilty pleasure watches, but nothing's really outstanding. There's nothing that could described as a blockbuster anime, large budgets and lots of action. |

Strangely, the other day, I pondered tweeting a question about the tendency of certain Saint Seiya fans to overreact to anything negative said about the show anywhere on the Internet.
Anyhow, here's a not-overly-positive Astro Boy review from Australia.

I love the Fairy Tail manga, and there were a few things I dug about the anime - the story gets better (if only by virtue of eventually having one).
Justin was right, though. Did it have a budget consisting of whatever change they could scrape out of the couch cushions? That'd disappointing. It could be ridiculously cool-looking and vibrant, but... |

lol. donuts.
loved this weeks show. I was always hoping you'd talk to Robin some week. Since I'm an aspiring artist myself (still goin through art college, nothin fancy yet) and I draw alot of anime styled things, I always wanted to hear her take on being an anime artist since she's a professional. Thanks for all the insight Robin. and yes. "how to draw anime" books need to just...die :/ As for artist alley people selling fanart. I'm only ever really interested in those that have a style that's totally different or more detailed from the style in the show. otherwise, if it looked just like the show, I'd rather just get a poster from the dealers room :/ Its like seeing a character you love, being portrayed from someone else's perspective. Atleast that's my take on it. |

I think next time you guys need to do the whole entire show completely deadpan but in southern accents. That would be excellent.

Just wanted to chime in to say that I agree with Zac on the artistry seems to have dipped slowly over the past few seasons. Granted, it's not as bad as late season Ranma, but the art still looks quite lazy at times.

For art instruction, I like the Shoujo Manga Techniques books ("Drawing Basics" and "Writing Stories"), published by Digital Manga Publishing, which are fairly intensive even though they're presented in manga format themselves. Though, unlike most "How to Draw Manga" shelf clutter, they're straight English translations of Japanese instructional books and not cheap American-made cash-ins.
Even if you're not interested in drawing shoujo-like comics per se, most of what is covered can be applied to pretty much any other kind of comic book storytelling, manga-style or otherwise. |

People honestly think that Death Note script is a geniune article? It's a massive trolling, mark my words.
I had friends (as much as anyone's ever been a friend to me) who set up in Artist Alley at Otakon, drawing their custom characters, but I have to be honest, I don't get it. The folks who are drawing copyrighted characters aren't drawing their own, and the ones who draw their own don't interest me, because I'm at the convention to get stuff based on the shows I like. I bought a few pieces of art I liked, but I didn't get drawn towards the original material. Justin seems to get along better with his sister than I would. And they even share interests! My god, my sister would laugh if I even suggested watching an anime with her. She already thinks I'm mentally ill for being into anime at my age. And, though I'm probably mentally ill, anime has little to do with it! Brother/sister relationships that work mystify us. I love hearing from Robin for once, by the way. I'm surprised I didn't think of any questions to ask her. I'm a fan and a good writer... |

Not much I can comment on this week...
I agree with Justin. Zac, don't listen to Casey. Everything she spews is crap if its not old-school shoujo. |

Your take on the matter makes me glad to have completely overlooked the whole script leak fiasco. Thanks.
I'll freely admit to going absolutely crazy over Saint Seiya back in the day, but I'm not about to deny that it doesn't look too great after taking off the requisite rose-colored glasses. I haven't re-watched it in years and yes, the music was one of its best elements. Once you've seen one story arc, you've seen them all. Speaking about reduced animation quality, you're absolutely right but at least once in a while that's fixed for the DVD release these days. It didn't really seem to happen that often before, at least from what little I know. Sure, they do that for marketing purposes, but it's still better than nothing. In any case, the show continues to be a nice listen. Keep it up. |

Really liked this show, as usual. Robin was great; she had me dying with a few of the anecdotes she told. (Fans requesting creepy porn-y art of their favorite characters? Never!) To comment on one of the last questions, what I'm most interested in learning about Viz is what the deal is with the soundtrack changes that popped up in the SyFy airing of the first two episodes of Monster, as they don't seem to make any sense no matter which way I look at them. I just hope the DVD release is unmolested, or else Viz may find themselves losing some of the few sales they were probably going to get in the first place.
Also, am I the only person out there who enjoyed MAR somewhat? I'll fully acknowledge that it was completely generic tournament shounen, but I genuinely had fun with it if I turned my brain off. Granted, I think most of that had to do with the (sadly short-lived) dub, which featured a bunch of the best of the LA crowd getting really hammy and over-the-top with it; the great Michael McConnohie's take on a mustachioed steel ball was a particular standout. The greatest amusement I drew was hearing Spike Spencer play a cheerful, energetic, chipper, hopeful, confident, spiky-haired shounen protagonist...in other words, the complete polar opposite of Shinji. It must have been massively cathartic for him. It really bums me out that I'll have to slog through the second half in Japanese, because I suspect it won't be remotely as fun. |

I agree, MAR was simply harmless shonen fun. Sure it wasn't even ip to One Piece's standards but I never remember it getting as bad as Bleach currently is. I also liked the fact that opposed to most shonen series the power of the characters made sense unlike say Bleach or One Piece where a character's power level is the whim of the author. I would rather watch a mediocre series like MAR than a good series turned awful like Bleach or Code Geass. As for the spot of reviewer unless your looking for a guy whose easily angered, cusses every other word, would probably imply that the creator would make an excellent Nazi officer, and frankly can't write than I am not qualified. |

I could agree with that general line of thought...except that I'd consider Code Geass to be closer to mediocre than awful, certainly on average, but I also know by now that discussing this particular subject any further would quickly turn out to be an exercise in futility. |

Just want to add more to the podcast comments.
Good "how to draw..." books are great text book to understand underlying structure of human body (or animal body) and surrounding environment. Of course, there will be bad ones that ruins everything. I bought one of those "How to draw Shojo character" book even before it was translated into English. I've seen few recently published untranslated "how to draw manga character" books and I found pros and cons on those books. Pro: they're trying their best to explain basic anatomy and figure drawing. Cons: Their draftsmanship is not good enough despite their best intention. In many case, they try to avoid explaining structure underneath human face and just skip to simplified manga-style. It doesn't explain why they designed their ANime/manga characters to have big eyes and small mouth and tapered chin. Those other "how to draw..." in bargain bins are ones designed to sell to kids who just want to draw cool Anime/Manga characters. Of course, those kids have no idea what kind of difficulty is behind in creation attractive and convincingly designed Anime/Manga characters. In "bargain bin"'s case, inexperienced artists or HACK "artists" take advantage of that ignorance and making those god-awful "how to" books even though they don't have credentials. I don't know what kind of reliable resource are available for manga-style artist, but I found a reliable resource site for people who want to become good Japanese animator. (Japanese) Animator Development, Curriculum, and Study group http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~animation/book.html Basically, the all of those "how to draw people" in the curriculum site are regular fine art drawing books, not manga style drawing books. |
