I just watched the 'Making Of The Cat Returns' from the DVD. In it, Suzuki, Miyazaki and Takahata spoke a little about encouraging younger directors to take over from Ghibli's aging leaders. Hiroyuki Morita did a good job on The Cat Returns (it's refreshing to see different character designs sometimes). I'm looking forward to more news about new Ghibli movies.

Miyazaki is also bound to eventually retire as he's been doing anime/manga on and off for over 40 years.

He already wanted to retire ten years ago but didn't and given his reaction on his son's debut as a director he doesn't seem interested in making room for younger directors. I suppose he is afraid that the Ghibli trademark could lose its reputation. I would like to see something different from Ghibli but I hope they choose their new star by skills and not by family relations this time. |

It's good to see that there are more and more young Japanese students who are taking up the art of manga and anime as a career, even though they must know it's never going to make them rich, they want to do it for the art. That's dedication, and though many will surely fail, the gems will just as surely shine through the geonode, and both arts will continue to shine along with them.

Let's just say it. He's gonna die sometime in the near future. It's about time that Ghibli realized this and let the man be in peace. I'm glad they aren't letting Goro Miyazaki do anything. Gedo Senki is in my opinion, one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It's not really the movie itself, I just hate stuff with dragons that doesn't have seven balls included. |

Miyazaki should just retire instead of almost retiring. He could give ideas and people draw from that.

Miyazaki may be retired, but for him his work is more important than his family so he may be stepping back, but he's not leaving on his own two feet. but it never said he was anyway. It says they are allowing a new director to have a go is all. Suzuki knows Hayao smokes like a coal fired power station, and that can't be good for longevity. Some people dissing Goro because of Earthsea, is a bit harsh seeing as his father's first movie wasn't much better. Goro did a good job under the circumstances, and I don't believe his father could have done any better with it, indeed I believe his father dropped him in it knowing Laguin was a bit of a tough customer to please.

Castle of Cagliostro isn't much but million times better than Earthsea movie. That might have something to do with the fact by the time he was directing it he already had almost twenty years experience in animation doing in-betweens, key animation, lay outs, storyboards and directing. Goro didn't have that kind of experience. |
