Hey, some friendships are deeper than others. Is a hobby-based friendship any worse than one built on mutual love for gossip? Or those friends or family members who pick topics of conversation based on what's controversial/debatable/most likely to get a rise out of you? (Ya know, they people who only want to talk to you about politics because you belong to a rival party of their own, or religion, because they think your religious beliefs and practices, or lack thereof, are strange?) I think friendships based on shared hobbies are better than ones based on talking badly about others or constant, never-ending, debates.
Plus, Nina knew more than Paola's basic likes and dislikes, she knew her secret obsession! That's gotta be worth somethin'!

The sad truth about many adult friendships. However, Nina can take this opportunity to turn it around and learn more about Paola.
Frankly, though, Nina is not entirely at fault; did Paola volunteer some personal information about herself before? If you want a deeper friendship, you have to share something of your past. You shouldn't get upset with people for not being able to read your mind.

Um... how do those go together at all? Or are you just pointing out she can watch anime that isn't shoujo? |
Hence the "go figure" remark. I have no idea why I did it, other than it's my most favourite Anime ever. She seemed to enjoy it too, which was a treat.

Reminds me of conversation I had with one of my friends and his girlfriend while killing time in a hotel lobby at a convention.
*While talking about what everyone been up to.*
Me: There's one thing I've been meaning to ask you.
Friend: Ok.
Me: I know what your father looks like. But what does your mother look like?
Friend: Kinda of like an older version of my sister.
Me: Oh -long pause- Wait you have a sister?
Friend: Yep. - pulls out his cell phone to show me a picture of his mother and sister.-
Friend's girlfriend: This is like one of those end of the season cliffhangers. All that is missing is some incidental music.

Isn't that usually the way it is? You hang out with people based on a shared interest. And you hang out with different people based on another interest. Sometimes you get to know each other beyond those shared interests, but to expect that to always be the case is just silly.

Admittedly, Nina is doing pretty awful here (not ONE thing?), but even close friends shouldn't expect you to know their entire biography, and as a lecture teacher once told me, humans generally retain 10% of what they hear. So even if Paola did tell Nina that she had a little brother, Nina might not remember it if she was only told once. Only if it came up in conversation several times would it be a little more reasonable to be upset that Nina couldn't remember, or obviously if Nina had met Paola's little brother.

Well, how much does Kevin know about Paola? See, if he can rattle off her life's story without having to reference anime or manga, THEN it would appear that Nina is the shallow one. But, if even he can't, and by most indications Kevin and Nina are Paola's closest friends, then it would appear that Paola is the one who hasn't opened up with her friends beyond her hobby.
But who can say they know everything about their friends anyways? Yeah, I've met the parents of my friends, but I haven't met all their brothers and sisters. There's no point. Nor do I know everything that went on in their childhood, just those things that they've chosen to share with me. So, again, before going after Nina for only knowing about her friend's interests in regards to her hobby, we'd have to know just when Paola has ever mentioned anything BESIDES anime and manga to her.

Away from keyboard, I can proudly claim that the majority of my informal acquaintances have little interest in anime.
I must less proudly admit that I never socialise with them however. Those alcoholic beverages everyone seems to want on social occasions aren't priced with misers in mind.

Hmmmm... it looks like Paola's lost some weight. Maybe she was working out during the Kuu-tan arc?

I can say that I do actually know non-anime stuff about my anime friends, even the ones I don't see often. Maybe we just talk about more stuff...

My thoughts exactly.
Paola's opinion of anime/seiyuu has dropped significantly for me.

Hold up a minute. Paola thinks Nodame Cantabile, an anime where "overuse of CG" is an understatement, is only "okay" because of the voice work?
Girl better just stick with her comic books from now on

Nina needs to find Paola's FaceBook page real quick.
Everything will be good after that
