Now if you're like most anime fans, you've tried to explain it to someone else at one point or another. But what parts of anime do you leave out of your stories? The blood? Loli? Yuri? What do you watch in anime all the time that you wouldn't tell your mother about if you were hooked up to a car battery and given a truck full of truth serum?
For example: Explain to your mother the relationships in Tenchi Muyo.
"Yes she's his aunt... and she was going to marry her brother." "No mom, she only LOOKS 12..."
Seriously, quit it with the images, unless they are directly related to the topic at hand. This forum is not an image board. ~C

Pretty much this. I mean, sure I'll correct close friends or family on misconceptions or minor things like "all anime is cartoon porn and in japan is all directed towards horny businessmen and closet pedophiles" or just because their names are western sounding doesn't mean FMA is not anime (that comes up a lot for some reason). But other than that it's really got nothing to do with them. Besides explaining anything is pointless anyway as most of the time you'll simply get a cocked eyebrow and an "Okay there bud, u have fun with that!"

I don't get in touch with my family for a really long time and I'd definitely not tell them anything about my life.
I find it extremely hard to talk about anime with someone who's never seen any anime(like explaining numbers to a 2 years old baby) so I always hold back, that's why I talk about it in ANN instead. Which is by the way a lot more fun.
Edit 4: The previous edits were totally unnecessary since I didn't modify anything.

He he, I don't talk about anime to my family, but I got some friends who talk about anime.
But the funny thing is, I got a group of friends who aren't shy to talk about it in school (around common friends), but my other group either don't understand it or there are few that like it but don't talk about it at all (being shy about it, liking something so immature I guess is the taboo they think about).
Unfortunately I don't quite fit into either group for anime talks because of my taste. While my anime buds like action-sci-fi stuff like Bleach or Naruto and stuff, I'm into more character driven shojo's. It feels like their taste is very mainstream anime (stuff from Adultswim).

How prevalent nudity is in anime. Watch the first episode of Queens Blade and you see acid squirting Breasts. Paranoia agent shows butts and boobs. Anime seems to be alot more lenient in what is shown than most tv shows over here.

I suppose there might be some things I'd be uncomfortable discussing with my family, although there are 2 members that would likely have no issue with whatever goes on in it (Dad + Uncle), because of jobs that mean they have at least some involvement professionally with anime or related media. So they know full well about all that kind of stuff and have probably come across all kinds of terrible things. The rest of the family however, erm I'd probably just avoid discussing anime at all whenever possible...

Probably the amount of nudety or underwear of school age girls. For instance Rosario + Vampire is filled with panty shots, the female lead in To Aru Majutsu no Index gets her clothes blown part, Louise in ZnT looks especialy young and has a lot of compromising scenes and not to even get started on Kanokon.
I still have a fairly fresh memory of how I looked at it at first, and the thought that any girl so young could be in such a fetishy way kind of shocked me. In fact I probably should not even mention a justifiable reason for watching some of the satires.

I suppose the most prevalent thing I watch that I generally try to avoid bringing up is yaoi-based shows... but honestly, those are few and far between, never pornographic, and Mom does already know about it (I mean, the first anime DVD I ever bought was Earthian and we did watch it together.)
Quite simply, when your sister unknowingly borrows hentai from a friend and the two of you watch it with your mom, all bets are off.
I suppose the main thing I don't try to explain is simply what's going on in whatever I'm watching at the moment- I watch a lot of comedy that defy explaination. "Yes, the girl is his right hand and has a crush on him." "See, he's got a crush on her, but she's got a crush on him... he mostly likes curry. Later on she'll like him, but she'll like him too, but he won't realize it and start writing manga to attract her..." "I know she just dropped dead, she does that all time time- oh, they want to eat the dog at some point. Yes, that is a dog."
I think I'd either blow their heads up or they'd commit me if I tried to explain all of it.

I think Duellady gave several examples from what I can guess Midori days, School Rumble and Excel saga.
I guess there are a lot of strange plot in anime, and probably one of the worst things is if someone walks in and you are at an odd scene that explanation is not easy. Such as in Inukami, thank god I am happy no one realy took a look when I was at the macho man dimension. Actualy the alternate ED in that episode is absolutely hilarious, though most people would look at me strangley for me to explain it.

Content wise, I suppose that I wouldn't have anything to hide from my family since I've had my younger siblings (youngest being 14 years old) walking in on me as I watch fan service heavy titles like Elfen Lied and Dirty Pair Flash. At one time, my mother even accidentally bought me a hentai title which I had to explain clearly to her and she got quite mortified at the time.
But subject wise, I would be careful about what I explain to my folks regarding specific titles since I would find myself having an awkward explaining about Koi Kaze's look into incest and the use of young girls as government assassins in Gunslinger Girl.

Seeing DualLadyS' post, my parents seem less of an oddity to me than before. They do not watch anime, but they seem to be under the impression that anime is precisely the animated equivalent of live action titles, neglecting the Japanese influence. The upside is that they are never surprised to find any content in anime except those that they would find it surprising for me to watch. The downside is that they question why I prefer animated title to live action ones.

Definitely Hentai, and (Non-Hentai) Yaoi or Yuri. Pretty much almost any anime rated TV-14 or TV-MA I wouldn't tell my family because they believe all of this "cartoons are for kids" bullshit (except for my grandma). That could change, but I still won't tell them any of the above.
Oh, and I'm not dumb enough to tell my parents about Kannazuki No Miko. I'd rather be disowned for suing my sister for all she had.

Okay, clue me in here for someone that's never seen it, what's so bad about Kannazuki No Miko?

Since I've seen a few episodes I must say this anime is extremely boring, so I'm guessing he/she wouldn't want to talk about boring stuff to his family.
