Prior to the release of her latest outing, ONE (breaking creative boundaries, don't it?), BONNIE PINK has insofar been a fairly prolific artist whose career went through an unlikely rise (' A Purr-fect Sky' brought her back into mainstream focus, only if she was mainstream in the first place) and fall (Ring A Bell. CHAIN. Now: Joy/Happy Ending. Go figure.) with, for anime fandom, the usual highlights of her anime-related songs. Why I'm posting this thread is because,given that this is 'to each his own', I want opinions on how Bonnie Pink's almost-two decade-spanning career is going.
Personally, I think she has lost a lot of steam. Lots of luster. When you listen to that soulful, textured voice in 'Heaven's Kitchen' (her breakthrough single back in 1997; didn't really notice her then because I was 6 and only upon re-discovery three years ago did she prove to be one of my favorite J-pop artists..or not),you'd only wish she had stayed the same. But artists change. Bonnie, particularly, doesn't seem to be the most well-adjusted of the J-pop singer/songwriter crop. She was so unique and hefty in her Heaven's Kitchen and Evil & flowers albums; now, I could barely discern inspiration in a song like 'Joy'. For once, she was self-effacing, very charming and infectious in her craftsmanship. I give her credit for retaining visibility but as of late she's hardly the impressive musician I know. Aside from what few anime songs I've heard her do, the only album I've actually listened to is Even So, which I really, really like. But with just that being my limited exposure of her, I can't say much else. Regardless, I have to say I'm pretty happy with just this album, though. She's well-enunciated in English (sooo much more that other J-artists I've heard), has soothing (or "soulful," as you put it) singing voice, and her melodies are pretty catchy for what I know of 'em ("New Dawn" is probably my favorite track on that one).

I seriously thought I was the only one with this opinion. Ever since her Golden Tears album, she's turn to the more mainstream glamour image, which is understandable given her dissipating popularity and her maturing age. She can not or does not want to be perceived as the young, raw, spunky experimentalist when she first came out belting Do You Crash? ten years back then and will have to may want to transition into a more mature station (not that much different from a typical Hamasaki song).
I wish she would go back to her roots, which was really her first 3 albums, that defined her as a musician. Her latest album with the song Ring A Bell have been disappointing to say the least. Although some tracks on Thinking Out Loud do show some promise, like Nagasumi Blue, it seemed like all that was left of the punk steam rolled of with her new back of the sales album. |
