normally i wouldn't think twice about this, but i'm just stunned at the amount of effort Disney has gone through to promote this. i don't there's ever been any push like this for an anime. i mean they've been pushing on the Disney channel for weeks now, and there's actual COMMERCIALS. it probably won't take the box office, given the theater count, but it could be the highest grossing anime movie in the US.

I'm not sure. My girlfriend says she's going to watch just because of the star appeal of Hayao Miyazaki, and like so many of his works, that alone will make it fairly popular, not to mention the ad time it's getting. But the plot seems too childish (after all, Disney's picked it up) to be the highest grossing anime in the US, I think.

That's just thinking in terms of anime fans though, isn't it? If you add in all the advertisement it's getting, especially with names like Jonas and Cyrus involved, I could imagine that a lot of people that might not even know what anime is would be interested in it (pre-teens, and younger, maybe).

Im hoping it does well, if only for the fact that it could help revive interest in anime.
Just because Disney picked it up does not automatically mean it its childish... what about Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke? Those were released through Disney, but they were more mature themed movies. But even if the plot is a bit childish, who cares? Its meant for kids. But just because its for kids doesn't mean it cant be enjoyed by teens and adults. Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars |

It would be nice if it could, I haven't seen it so I can't say. It would be good if anime continues to become even more popular.
I am probably going to watch it with my brother who is about 8 years old and has enjoyed some anime series and movies like The Girl Who Leapt through time. |

![]() And I agree with DuskyPredator. The more anime movies are released, the more anime in general would become mainstream. Hell, I'll buy a ticket or two just to boost the sales if it'll help the cause. Who knows, I might enjoy it. I shouldn't judge prematurely. |

It could be a better hit if they were to put in more theaters.

Bigger than the first Pokemon movie? I don't think it's likely. But I agree Disney has been pushing this one a lot, and considering all the positive reviews that it's been getting, that it will do really well for an anime movie. Personally, I don't think I will like it as much other Miyazaki films, but it is short and it's playing near me so I will see it sometime next week. |

I think it has a good chance of getting big. Miyazaki's name alone should be enough to get a number of people to watch it. Plus it seems like it's highly likely to get a nomination which usually resaults in an increase in sales and rentals. Also, once reviews start coming out I'm sure there will be even more people going to see it. If America is at the point where G Force is actually competition for a Miyazaki movie I will be deeply saddened. Lets all hope that this movie does as well as it should.
I was going to go to the midnight premier last night with a group of friends but I had the awful luck of getting sick. But I talked to my friends who saw it and they all said it was great. |

I haven't really been the biggest fan of Studio Ghibli's films they've released over the past decade. While they look real well with visuals, the storylines for their films like The Cat Returns, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle haven't been able to suck me into being immersed with the films like their works from the 1980s and 1990s, thus giving me a 'meh' feeling, kind of like my thoughts on many of Disney's movies being released over the past decade. The fact Ponyo's only gonna be in limited theater distribution despite all the commercials Disney's been pumping out of it only further casts my doubts over having high hopes for this movie.
@braves: Gotta agree with you on that end. Pokemon's first movie premiered in over 3,000 theaters on its opening weekend and was the #1 grossing film on said same weekend making over $31 million. It's currently the highest grossing anime movie in America with the second and third movies rounding off somewhere on the top 5 according to an article from Associated Content. Considering the hype from Disney and the movie's limited theater release, I could see it breaking the top 15, but I doubt it's gonna be anywhere near the first Pokemon movie. |

I think Ponyo's biggest impact in the market will come afterwards during its DVD sales. This limited theatrical release is probably intended to start the marketing campaign, to get some review buzz, perhaps an Oscar nomination or two, and build some word of mouth. I would bet that Disney is expecting the bulk of the movie's profits to come the DVD (and Blu-Ray??) sales once this release has primed the pump.
Hubby and I are making plans to see the movie this evening, by the way. |

I just saw Ponyo and it was a very sweet little film. I saw it the first showing this morning and there were about 50 people in the theatre. The bad thing about Ponyo is that if you don't go into it with a child or with the mindset of one it is very easy to get sucked into all of the plot holes (and there are plenty of them.) Tina Fey made it worth it, she was amazing.
I do seeing Ponyo bombing and maybe it will shock studio Ghibli awake into making something a bit more thought through.. |

I think specifically because it is younger themed will most likely ensure its success. The thing that hurt Spirited Away is that parents unfamiliar with anime who took their kids to see it found out their kids got scared, didn't understand most of it or both the parent and child were disappointed with it because of its heavily Asian themed visuals. And SA was several steps down in maturity level than Princess Mononoke. Ponyo will be much more easily digested by the tweens, preteens and mainstream animation/anime viewers. And as long as it's good, it won't alienate the long-time Miyazaki fans. |

It somewhat depends on what you mean by "competition". They're both animated films aimed at school age children, so they're certainly in the same marketplace, but one was a mindless CGI/live-action mix attempt at the same niche of pop culture referencing low brow slapstick that Dreamworks has down pat and the other is a Hayao Miyazaki fairy tale. Granted, it's highly unlikely that Ponyo will earn more money than G-Force (though G-Force has been an unmitigated flop) but that's hardly the only measure of success. Now, if we want to talk critical competition, it's going to be difficult this year to come up with an animated film that competes head to head with Up. |

I was meaning along the lines of awards. I think it would be a shame if G Force won an academy award when up against Ponyo (not to mention Up, that was good). I can understand Ponyo wont be earning as much, but it should at least get a better reception than G Force. |
