I notice there's been a lot of talk about Tokyopop's paper quality issues, but not a lot has been brought up about Dark Horse's. The only place I've seen it mentioned is on the reviews on amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Berserk-30-Graphic-Novels/product-reviews/1595822119

I just picked up volume 30 of Berserk this week and was surprised how thin and flimsy it was. It's so much thinner that they had to make the circle on the spine that hold the volume number smaller.

So far it doesn't look like the pages are as see-through as Tokyopop, but Berserk's art is so busy it wouldn't have been noticeable anyway.

It's too bad the paper quality is going down considering the price is going up with the next volume. Has anyone else noticed this happening to other Dark Horse series?

Actually, no.

I bought Dark Horse's Oh My Goddess Vol. 12 rerelease (the latest one) a week or so ago. The spine is the same thickness and the book uses the same paper as the other volumes. The paper also is noticeably better than what TokyoPop used in my copy of Fruits Basket Vol. 23.

I also recently bought vol. 4 of Dance in the Vampire Bund, a Seven Seas title. It's also no different from the previous three. I added this to say that I think TokyoPop is the company making the most drastic changes to deal with the economy.

I don't know since I don't follow any Dark Horse series, but maybe it's more to do with page-count than paper-quality? According to amazon.com, Berserk 30 (as well as 31) has 208 pages, while it seems most of the previous volumes were listed at 216, 224, even 248 pages. I don't know how much of a difference that would make in the physical width of the book, but perhaps it has something to do with the difference you noticed.

(also, I wanted to point out, in case everyone hadn't heard yet, that Tokyopop has stated they will be switching back to a higher quality paper starting with this October's releases. hopefully this marks the return of happier days for manga publishers!)

I seriously hope fans don't boycot the series simply because of this.

My most recent Darkhorse purchase was their CLOVER release and I'm not at all happy with it. The paper isn't that nice, especially when compared to a random vol of Hellsing I've pulled out. But paper quality isn't what bugs me. What bugs me is the spine of the book. I haven't even read the book yet, just skimmed through some pages, and the spine already has nasty creases. I won't be surprised at all that if I don't manage to get a 2nd re-read out of this book because I can easily see the whole thing just falling apart. Even the glue-job on the binding compared to the hellsing volume seems thinner. Not at all happy with their cheap release of Clover vs the original release Tokyopop gave it.

Were all the copies of it like that at the store? Or did you order it online and not have a choice in which one was given to you? I ask because it sounds more like a bad book that slipped past quality control.

Something similar happened to me once with Oh My Goddess. I ordered a volume online, and the one shipped to me was missing the entire first set of pages. I opened the cover and it started on page 15 or 20, or something. The copy I exchanged it for was perfect.

Oh no, it was the only copy left in barnes and noble when I bought it, but I checked to make sure there wasn't any damage to it. It looked perfect to me. It was only once at home when I was flipping through it, looking at the art that the first crease on the spine showed up. I don't think it's just my copy. I'm afraid to see what happens to the spine now when I actually sit down to read this later.

I didn't notice any real problems with the copy of Oldboy volume 3 that I got about a week ago. Of course I haven't had the chance to read it through yet, but nothing really popped out to me when I flipped through it.

I have the new omnibus release of Clover and I was quite happy with mine. I don't buy from Dark Horse but it was way nicer than my Loveless books from Tokyopop. My only complaint is the thin cover but it seems to be glued fine and I can't see through the pages. I've read it twice and loaned it out once and it is still in good shape.

Oldboy Vol.3 has been out for a while. So probably won't indicate recent quality problems.

This was discussed on a thread at Mania. I believe that a possible reason may have been that because Berserk is published with Digital Manga, it may have caused a drop in quality. Which may be why other releases published only by DH still have the high-quality.

Hmm.. Haven't taken any recent volumes of Berserk out of their wrapping as I've been cheating and reading them earlier online. I hope it's not that noticeable. I did notice the book was thinner when I got it at the shop, but I do think that is page count.

I checked. Volumes 29 and 30 only differ by two pages.

I second this! I can't believe a great manga publisher like DH would make such an oversight. I hope they fix the spine issue when they release Chobits and CCS...
