Who here appreciates anime that, while they aren't heavy on plot or story, can be looked at as light and harmless fun? A lot of fans seem to call shows with this kind of description "fluff" anime.
I actually like fluff shows because they make for good stress relief after a long, busy day. Much of my collection consists of shows like Pani Poni Dash, Best Student Council, and Murder Princess -- all of them that don't take themselves too seriously and can be blast to watch. While I will take a look at a serious titles from time to time, it doesn't mean that I'll neglect to have some fun once in a while. For some reason though, watching fluff shows is seen as a heresy by fans who insist on treating anime as being a purely intellectual medium (which I think is a bunch of baloney, anyway). |

I couldn't agree more. I've believed from day one of my official "hardcore" anime watching that people took this stuff way too serious. I need a good fluff from time to time and I like to call those times my ecchi romps. Every now and then I just need to give my brain a break and I'll watch 3-4 ecchi, fanservice infested, yet relaxing shows. "Serious" shows are cool too, but I like laughing a lot more than I do thinking. Looking at my shelf right now I have Ikkitousen next to Kanon, Desert Punk next to Eva and Nerima Daikon brothers next to Princess Tutu; my fluff and non-fluff is pretty much split down the middle. I think if more anime fans watched fluff then we'd be a much more agreeable community and not the obnoxious bunch we are now. |

That's interesting. I consider Tutu itself to be fluff. Not that it's a bad show in any way, mind you (and it's definitely in my top ten), but it is very light and simplistic. |

Considering how popular Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star are, I'd expect most answers to this question to be in the affirmative. If there's something to relate to amongst the light-heartedness, a lot of people find such shows more addictive than their synopses would typically entail. (As a side note, I'm intrigued as to whether you alphabetise your collection or not, The King of Harts.) |

Well, everybody has their preferences, and I did not mean to say that anime isn't meant to be enjoyed for its deep meanings and such. It's just that some fans take this sort of angle ("anime is meant to be deep and complex and anything else is trash") a bit too far and they neglect the simple fact that it's all there to entertain. Heck, based on ratings alone, the common person in Japan would rather watch Sazae-san or Shin-chan than an anime that fans would find "edgy" or "intelligent". I watch anime to be entertained, not to make me feel smart!

That and Negima!? and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Ouran high school host club, and a few others |

My definition of fluff is a lot looser than yours then. I define fluff as a show that has no point or a point that really doesn't matter. Shows like AZD, School Rumble, etc are fluff shows. They have no point or meaning of existence other than to be popped into the DVD player when you're bored or exhausted. On the flip side, Princess Tutu has a story that's meant to be payed attention to. Eva, Kanon, and the like are shows that don't follow my definition because they're focused on the stories because they drive the show. Without a strong story, those shows would stink. Following my belief, you're one or the other, you're a fluff or not, there's no middle ground.
That comment of mine was a fluff in itself. Not meant to be taken serious. It's kind of like a Dr. Phil comment, "Let's all watch fluff anime and learn to love one another, OK?" |

Fluff shows can be quite fun. They are guilty pleasures, in some, if not most, cases. But, while they are fun to watch, steady diet of them is rather hard to take.
I have Ikki Tousen on my shelves, and it's stupid, very little plot (IMO) but it's light on the brain after watching Fullmetal Alchemist and other shows that wrench at your heart. If you don't have at least one fluffy anime series on your shelves...I think that there's something seriously wrong with you. |

Haha, I actually understood what you're getting at. I mostly wanted to use that well thought out "fluff" of yours to emphasize an earlier point I made.

It's okay to have some light-hearted anime in a collection. One needs something that's nothing but good fun after watching serious and dramatic anime. I've been currently looking for fluff. All I have (no one make fun of me) is the second box set of Pokemon, the original (the one with Misty). That, right now, is the only light-hearted anime in my collection. And then There's Ranma 1/2, but can I count that as fluff?

I Definitely enjoy some fluff.every once in a while. Both in the form of fan-pandering fanservice shows and cliched shounen action fluff too.

Sorry, didn't see that earlier. For right now, yes I do have it alphabetized. I know that later on down the line it's going to get tough to keep doing that, but I couldn't stand it if they weren't. I'm the kid that would spend a whole weekend or more reorganizing his Pokemon cards so that they'd be in numerical order; in other words, I need order. I don't know if it's OCD or what, but things need to be in order. If I were to switch Vandread and Yumeria right now (with Voices of a Distant Star in the middle), I'd go nuts. I'm going nuts just thinking about that. Whenever I see people's shelves and they aren't organized, I just want to jump through and put them in order for them. It get's really annoying when I call a show by a different name, but have arrange it differently because of what's on the box. I don't call it His and Hers, I call it Kare Kano or Gurren Lagann I call Tengen Toppa. Oh dear goodness I think I have a problem. To stay on topic: All time favorite fluff- Fumoffu. I've never rewatched a show so many times. It never gets old. I pretty much watch it after every show I finish up so that I can have something to do before I go to sleep. Best part is that I know that show inside out and I laugh at every gag they pull. It's great.
Don't feel ashamed because I've been wanting to buy the first season for a while now. Also, you have a good eye because you obviously know that the show went downhill as soon as Misty left. |

Do I enjoy fluff? Yeah, I suppose. There's nothing wrong with a nice, simple, fun show. I don't really watch that much of it though. I generally try to keep up with a variety of forms of entertainment so I usually have enough stuff that actually goes above and beyond to keep me busy. Also though, fluff is not synonymous with crap. There are certainly shows that while they might not be described as great, are good, simple, enjoyable 'fluff'. A lot of anime is just crap though and I don't excuse that on the basis that "it's just light, fun, fluff" or whatever.

I enjoy shows with a good sense of humour. Would I refer to Ping Pong Club as "fluff"? Hardly. Most of the titles mentioned in this thread are so boring, unfunny, and uninteresting as to make me give up on anime entirely.

Yes, especially romantic fluff! There's nothing wrong with a bit of light viewing when you don't want to have to concentrate or think very hard about plots/storyline etc. Seriousness is overated
