.hack//SIGN - an exceptional sci-fi story that blew me away when I first saw it. People try to say it's a boring series, when it's not. It's a puzzler and doesn't go down the usual cyber punk route. The music sealed the deal as it created the perfect atmosphere. The art is brilliant and so beautifully crafted and the digital effects were way ahead of it's time for anime.
MADLAX - A unique mystery story that once again shows me anime can break the norms of how things are done. A story that took serious leaps confirms the indy spirit of Bee Train.
Chrono Crusade - Packed with emotion and action and a great storyline. A fair share of fanservice but more substance to back it up.
Air - Air was so unique because it defied all expectations that I had. At first glance it seemed like a cute slice-of-life romantic comedy, but instead it was a work of pure art.
Cardcaptor Sakura - I bet your all looking at me sideways for adding a sweet and bubbly magical girl, but CCS holds strong nostalgic appeal as well as a kick-back and enjoy anime.
Bottom:
When they Cry-Higurashi I'm a patient person, I have no problem with a talkie in film or anime. But this was too much talkie and not enough thrills. Repetitive story arcs that were too much like long and pointless fillers with each winding and pointless episode, and arctype characters made this a really a giant waste. Only a few redeeming factors kept this from flunking out entirely on my list, and that was the music and the opening theme and the occasionally good sound design of the chirping cicadas.
Elfen Lied - A gore fest. That's all it says-rather-screams at me, look at how much blood and gore and nudity we can do! SHOCK! I don't know what the story was, if there was any because of the 1000% excess in violence. There's being realistically violent, then there's laying it on thick.
.hack//G.U. Trilogy I thought "awesome an CGI movie in the vein of Advent Children" and I loved the GU Games. No. GU Trilogy was a very expensive re-cap by CC Corp. The story was so disjointed even I was lost, and I've played all the games!

Best
Code Geass - Great storyline, brilliant cliffhangers, those are just two reasons that this is a masterpiece in my mind.
Kodocha - One of the few anime I've seen that can be hilarious one moment and seconds later turn extremely serious, a great work by Fruits Basket's director.
Death Note - Like many have said before me, one of the most original, dazzling, and brilliant anime of our generation. Plus, it's the only anime I've seen that can make eating a fattening snack look epic (I'll take a potato chip and EAT IT!!).
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - This anime did things many didn't dare to, but Gurren Lagann made them work. Possibly one of the manliest anime of all time.
Worst
Yu-Gi-Oh! - A world where all of life's problems are solved by playing children's card games. Need I say more?
Dragonball Z - Three words: Too many fillers.

Time for an updated list.
The Top 10:
Clannad - Sugar and spice and everything nice. Hell, yes! This series encapsulates everything I love about anime and does it well. It is now my favorite series as watching the ensemble cast come together, despite having their own issues to contend with, leaves me feeling great.
Hell Girl - Calling this a masterpiece is unjust, but for lack of a better description, it'll have to do. Someone compared it to Law & Order for its episodic delivery, and just like L&O, it works.
Seeing how people's interpretations to call for revenge left me feeling more sorry for the human race, and cheering Ai's involvement to ferry them to hell.
Now, I'm in hell waiting for its sequels to arrive on DVD here.
Starship Operators - The worst thing about this series was the number of episodes, as it was clearly too few. Due to this, the story feels disconnected, emotions were quickly dismissed, and the closing left more questions than answers.
A shame, really, as this had potential to be even better had it just 13 more episodes. I prefer shows where tactics are more relevant than battle scenes, and this delivered despite its limitations.
The Familiar of Zero - Campy anime, here I come! This can't get any more campy regarding a Japanese teenager taken from his world to become the familiar of a girl with no magical ability whatsoever. While this series does have unreleased sequels, 13 episodes just isn't enough.
I'm also attracted to Louise. No, not that way you perv, but in the style. What's worse, is I can't figure out why! There's nothing fantastic about the artwork, but at the same time, there is!
PaniPoni Dash - What's not to love when a 10 year old teacher flips off her students? Sadly, the students of 1-C are more aggravating than pleasing, but thank goodness members of other classes helps balance this out. The surprising star of this series isn't Rebecca or a student, but the chalkboard! Be sure to turn on the features to translate the chalkboard when you watch it!
As for the remaining 5, not much changed from my other list, aside from Shakugan no Shana dropping from #1 to second place.
The Bottom 5:
Divergence Eve - Still the worst series in my collection as I still can't get past episode 2. As one who appreciates art while watching, those damn unnatural-sized breasts are just too much to endure. This may be a plus to some, but not for me. The characters are just plain ugly.
I'm curious to know, though, if male characters have unnaturally large crotch areas. For some reason, I seriously doubt it.
Comic Party and Comic Party: Revolution - The only saving grace to this series was Aya Hasebe, and I wish more of the story was given to her situation. Instead, we're left with a whining jerk for much of CP. It's sequel, with voice changes and character design changes, was not much better. This series should have been titled Comic Funeral.
DearS - Overall, not a bad series, but it was just too slow. There are a few gems from it (such as the DearS watching a porno), but with 13 episodes, I kept asking myself "Are we there yet?" The story and character development are very weak, and believe it or not, makes Sister Princess an action series.
The other two spots are reserved for later use.

I'd say Comic Part and it's sequel are okay but not something that is downright amazing or terrible. And voice changes and character design changes ( which for design changes are slight) at least shows these characters aren't in some strange time-warp (First series in highschool, sequel in college, so I'd expect some changes in appearance and atitudes.) But simply put it's no Genshiken (which is the high end) nor is it a Dojin Works (which is the low end.)
Also one can understand why Aye being an unexplored character, as it does have some harem aspects to it, and when you have a large group of girls all after one guy, well a lot of them are going to be disappointed or frankly have the time to explore them (as they tended to focus on the female lead)

Top 10 -
1. One Piece - After much thought, I have decided that One Piece is my #1 favorite anime. The series has kept it's consistency since the very beginning, and in fact it's only got better. There's no doubt in my mind that it is the best of it's kind. The characters are amazing. Luffy is so cute, yet so strong when he has to be, and the rest of the main characters all have their own distinct personalities, and they're all put in the spotlight in most arcs, so you'll learn to like them. One Piece also has the ability to be hilarious (and actually hilarious, not just trying to be funny like some other series.) at one moment, really sad enough to cry at another, and otherwise just serious. Most people think that the series is a complete joke, but it has the potential to be really serious, and it is from time to time. The background music in the series is just really great. I especially love the orchestral pieces, but they all set up the correct mood for whatever is going on in the series at the time.
There's so much more that could be said about the series including the fact that it's actually going somewhere, as well as the fact that Oda is a genius at bringing back things that you thought were pointless at the time, when in fact they were not pointless at all. Sometimes for humor, othertimes for story. I just love this series to pieces and so far it's been 400 or so episodes of epicness.
2. Trigun - My favorite series for the longest time, it was the first "real" anime I ever got into. Unfortunately it's been a while since I've seen it. Like One Piece, this series is actually funny. I laughed a whole lot at it, but it also is really serious and sad at other times as well. The conflicting ideals of Vash and Knifes also make it really interesting. Being a pacifist I will always take Vash's side!
3. Fullmetal Alchemist - While it varies greatly from it's manga counterpart, the anime is still pretty good. Like the two above, it is able to balance humor and seriousness really well. Although FMA is more depressing and sad.
4. Ouran High School Host Club - Just funny, that's what this series is. I love Tamaki! He makes this series all of the more funny and better to me due to how dramatic he is to everything. Also once I found out that Haruhi was a girl, I just had to keep on watching the series. The animation is great and the background music is all pretty and sets the mood well for the series.
5. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann- I was hesitant to watch this anime, having heard of all of the fanservice. There was some fanservice, and it did in fact get on my nerves, but the rest of the anime was so good that it didn't take down my final score. I really loved the over the topness, the hot-bloodedness, emotion, and characters in this series. Some may say it's cheesy, but I thought it was really good.
6. Monster - A very different anime from anything I had seen before. It's dark and a bit depressing at times. It had a lot of violence, which is something that I can do without. But it wasn't just violence to be violence so I can let that slide easily. Given that it's a "Seinen" anime/manga, one would probably expect more fanservice, but this series is truly one of a kind. There isn't any at all that I recall, which I'm very thankful for. This anime/manga could easily be adapted to a novel or live action film and not fail at it. I assure that.
7. Death Note - When I first saw the beginning of this series it quickly became one of my favorite anime ever, even though I personally very much disagreed with Light's view. The one problem with this series is that it just gets a little dull from time to time. The Yotsuba company part bored me a little bit, and then we all know what happens after that. While at "that point" it becomes really interesting again, after that the series becomes a bit dull again. The ending did end it, though. And that's one good point, whether I really liked it or not... Some other series just leave you with a cliff hanger.
8. Code Geass- I put this up so high is because it entertained me quite a bit when I watched it. Most anime I've seen just don't do that (excluding ones on this top list, of course.) but I did find this anime to be pretty weird at times.
*still editting obviously*
9. La Corda D'Oro - I know putting this in front of of Nodame Cantabile is possibly going to get me shot... But I really liked this series. All of the males are adorable, and Kahoka is my favorite female character from any anime ever. Being a music major myself who is not perfectly talented, it's nice to see people who aren't perfect at playing their musical instrument from the start.
From all I've been through in my life the later episodes spoke to me for that reason. It may have seemed a little angsty, but she is the character I relate to the most.
Honorable mentions:
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood- An anime extremely likely to make it into my Top 10, but I'm holding off for now while it airs.
Samurai Champloo - The characters definitely kept me going through this rather episodic series. Plus the episodic episodes were never boring, and some of them had some rather hilarious moments. I also really liked the ending to this series.
Nodame Cantabile - What really drew me to this anime (or manga really, since the first I saw of this series was from the first volume that I bought.) was that it's focused around music students. (I'm a music student!) But it's focused a lot more around romance. Definitely not my favorite series, but it's still worth a watch.
Eyeshield 21 You know, for some reason I have really enjoyed this anime. I thought "Oh, it's just another one of those sports/Shounen anime." But really Eyeshield 21 is a very fun anime. The characters are pretty good. Especially Hiruma, I swear Hiruma makes this anime special. He is absolutely hilarious. And I find it hard to believe that this is in my top 10, me being a total band geek that despised football in high school.
Skip Beat! - I got recommended this from Ouran High School Host Club having heard that it had similar humor. I found it to be pretty funny at times!
Lupin III - I have not seen enough of this series to warrant putting it in the top 10... But I'm putting it here because I really enjoyed what I saw of it.
Dragon Ball- Like the precursor to One Piece. I loved the emphasis put on adventure as opposed to the emphasis put over action in DBZ.
Lastly there is Case Closed/Detective Conan and Nana. Two series that would probably be at least somewhere on either of the above two lists. I just haven't seen enough of them, unfortunately.
Worst:
1. Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo - I've seen enough of this series to realize that it just isn't for me. I can not stand random anime without a plot.
2. FLCL - I saw all six episodes of this series and I was like "What?" The same from the above applies, but FLCL is better than Bobobo...etc., at least.
3. School Days - Okay, so I enjoyed the main story here... But the episodes were so saturated with ridiculous and blatant fanservice that I could barely even enjoy the story. (I HATE fanservice. Fanservice intended towards males, that is. Ew.)

Ya know my post back on page 41 was my first post here. I figure after almost 3 years and almost 5000 posts later it's time for a slight update as my tastes have changed and there's been lots of good shows since then. So time to update my lists. Once again though the top 100 favorites and Top 5 worst shows are in no particular order. Well, except for my top favorite. That is my favorite as that title (the manga actually) is what really cemented my love for anime.
Top 10 Favorites
Oh/Ah My Goddess---As mentioned this title was what really cemented my love for anime. The manga just grabbed me and I never looked back. I love the 2 new tv series of it as they really follow closely to the manga. Even after all these years the show/manga is still special to me. The real true best part of the show though I think is not the goddess related activities but the more slice of life story plots. The way the characters grow and evolve together.
"X" tv---Don't confuse the tv series with the movie. The movie is pure shit. The tv series is vastly superior. This has always been my favorite title by Clamp. The tv series has lush visuals and is just visually stunning. The story is very engaging and the series has a perfect balance of action and drama to balance it out. The real draw is how the characters evolve around each other. Especially the Dragons of Heaven. Watching Kamui and the others face their destinies and grow to rely on each other was the strong point for me. Plus the fight scenes were just awesome.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust---The original Vampire Hunter D movie was one of the first anime I ever saw (that I knew was anime). I love the novels and the sequel movie was just amazing. From the good dub job to the simply beautiful scenery and animation. This movie is one of the most visually appealing anime movies I've seen period. The post apocalyptic landscapes and monsters are just lush and vibrant and gorgeous. The plot while simpler in nature is executed quite well i think. Plus D's character is just silent and cool.
Ai Yori Aoshi---This is simply one of the very best examples of a nice sweet romantic comedy. There's your normal slapstic comedy in there like any other romantic comedy but there's equal amount of serious moments. Especially between Aoi and Kaouru. Watching them try to hide their relationship while still growing closer is very endearing and heart warming. I think they are also one of best examples of a couple in anime.
Getbackers---This is one of those guilty pleasures that you just can't give up. I tried the show out randomly with a blind buy and I've just been hooked every second since. Watching ban and Ginji get back what's important to others is just a hilarious thrill ride. The show is full of action and zany comedy. Plus the bond between Ban and Ginji is heartwarming and really gives the show some depth. A guilty pleasure but one I'm glad to have.
Haibane Renmei---This is one of the most visually amazing and just heart warming series I've seen. There's no action in it. No explosions or lots of silly comedy. Just a nice story driven series with lots of heart warming characters who go about with their lives trying to help each other. A nice change of pace from most of the rest of anime which is faster paced.
Black Lagoon---This is just one of the funnest shows I've seen. The action is off the charts, the dub is simply awesome, and who can argue with a hot girl with short shorts and guns? This is just one of best examples of a pure action show for me. I love the characters, the gunplay, and the fun and crude dialog. When ya wanna see shit get blown up and people get shot this is the show to turn to heh.
Hellsing Ultimate---This is probably my second favorite action series behind Black Lagoon. Alucard is simply badass to the maximum. The show is just dark and blood filled and fun. There's tons of action but good dialog too, and very good character development. Plus it's got a badass vampire killing nazis....how can ya possibly say no to that lol?
Fatal Fury---This is an old title based on the fighting game of the same title. It's silly and has a cheesy plot but dammit it's just fun as hell. And for its age the visuals and animation are very well done. This is just an old classic for me back from the VHS days. Plus it's to me a prime example of a building block for all shonen jump fighting shows since. The idea of the character fighting to get stronger to defeat that master opponent. Except with the 2 OVA's and movie you can watch all of Fatal Fury and not spend a year doing so.
Kurau Phantom Memory---While this show has a lot of action that to me is not the driving force behind it. It's the bond between Kurau and Christmas and how they strive to stay together through everything. All during the course of the show they are hunted and tested and have to over come everything. They fight to stay together no matter what and that's just endearing. Plus it's very heart warming to watch them try and save everyone from the Rynax...even those that had spent the entire series hunting them. The bonds between Kurau and Christmas are just amazing and the ending is one of the most heart warming period to me.
Top 5 worst shows
Ninja Resurrection---Oh my sweet jesus this show sucked so hard. I mean just a horrible plot, horrible voice acting, and bad animation. This show sucked many years ago and it still sucks harder then a hooker on payday.
Tekken---To me this is the WORST video game to anime adaptation ever. Even more horrible then that god awful Virtua Fighter one. Tekken just was like watching shit animated. In fact walking and talking piles of poo might have been an improvement.
Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo---To me this show is just freaking ridiculous. I mean really...using his nose hair to attack....."hearing" hair basically...the plot is just even absurd for anime. The characters are just stupid to me and the plot just seems like it was made while someone was tripping on weed. Bad weed. The ridiculousness of this show just astounds me.
Gundam Seed Destiny---To me I have never seen a show filled with more whiny emo moments then this show. The show had such lush visuals and animation but the simply horrendous dialog and characters ruined this show. I mean never before have I had characters so weak personality wise just ruin a show for me. The sheer stupidity and crappiness of the characters and their development, and how they can ruin such a visually stunning show, is what earns this show a spot here.
Battle Arena Toshinden---The second worst game adaptation I've seen. As bad as Virtua Fighter may be Toshinden and Tekken just are that much worse. Toshinden has very choppy and poor animation and IMO some of the most annoying and irritating characters period. It's sad that I'd hands down rather watch ANY of the live action Guyver over this without a second thought.

Although I've watched anime since the original US release of Robotech, I haven't gotten hardcore since the last few years, and never posted in the community (so forgive my n00bness).
My favorites:
1. Robotech (Macross Saga US release) - As a teenager with an expanding appreciation for characterization and plot, this was the best thing on TV, period. This show was sort of a secret pleasure since "cartoons were for kids". The complex characters, plot twists, and action just made this show perfect. Even some of the "bad guys" were likable (like Kyron). While this wasnt my first anime (there was a movie, Battleship Yamato I think it was called, pretty cool), it was my first anime series that I got hooked on, so because of that has to go #1.
2. Code Geass R2 - I loved the character interactions in this, and numerous plotlines revolving around divided loyalties. The ending was a tearjerker, both storywise and the fact that I wouldnt be seeing all these characters ever again. I loved the whole "Knight of the #" idea with different mechas for different knights. My only negative towards this one would be the fact that during fights people had so much time to make long winded speeches while dodging multiple attacks. The # of characters and the intensity of the plot put this above R1.
3. Last Exile - The most beautiful anime I've seen to date. The story is very cute with the sort of rags to riches theme with Claus & Lavie. Loved the characters in this, Alex Rowe is probably my favorite anime character of all. My only negative with it was the ending, it was confusing and vague.
4. Code Geass R1 - An introduction to the R1 universe and I fell in love with it's characters and plot. I am a big fan of "grey" shaded good guys, which both Suzaku and Lelouch make. Perfect mix of humor, romance, twisty plot, and serious undertones.
5. Robotech (New Generation) - Renewed my addiciton to the Robotech world. Thought the invid made cool looking, mysterious bad guys. Loved the characters, especially Rook who became one of my favorites. Only negative was that the plot was a bit thin and the episodes got a bit repetative.
6. Ghost in the Shell (SAC series) - The chronology of this series is a bit confusing for me, I know it started with a "Ghost in the Shell" movie, so I'll just lump the series I've seen together. I am a sucker for anything with "specialized team of different talents", and Ghost in the Shell does this beautifully. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn is great as Kusanagi. The action sequences are awesome, and every show has it's own little plot twist. This franchise lacks the interpersonal stories of other great anime (every episode is pretty much: threat, get the team together, fight the threat) but every episode is entertaining nonetheless.
7. Ergo Proxy - The uniqueness of the world got me hooked on this one. I really liked the artistic style of both the landscape and characters. It was a bit thin on characters (both in number and quality...I absolutely hated Vincent Law) but the cool factor of ReL made up for it a bit. The plot draws you in, never really giving complete answers until the very end.
8. Blood+ - I became a huge Kari Wahlgren fan from this show and even joined her fansite. While the plot is essentially Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the characters really draw you into this one (although towards the end Saya's introspection got annoying). The fight scenes were good although something nagged me about them...their speed, moves, and general power level seemed inconsistant. The different personalities of the bad guys really made this show.
9. Aquarion - The romance factor in this one got me hooked. The CGI battles were awesome to watch, and the plot was interesting, but often the episodes came off very campy. The humor of the show lightened up the "moral of the story" factor that seemed to be the main focus of every episode.
10. Trinity Blood - I've only seen the last half of this series so only have that to go on. Loved all the different characters in the show although some were bland or just not featured much. The fight scenes were fun to watch, but the ending seemed a bit corny.
Least favorites (no particular order):
1. Speed Grapher - Main character is a journalist with a camera that blows things up. Couldnt get into the plot, and the characters seemed too dramatic.
2. Bleach - I'm probably not giving this series enough of a chance because I've only seen a handful of middle episodes. Seems to have a lot of characters in it but just cant get into any of them. I've also never been a fan of "giant 500lb sword" anime. I may give this one another chance, by watching from the first episode on. I dont get the plot and the fight scenes are lame.
3. Robotech (Robotech Masters) - Yes I know it's blasphemy to have anything Robotech listed here. Also there is a general consensus that among any sort of trilogy that the 2nd part is always the best (ask any Star Wars fan that). However what killed this for me was Dana Sterling...absolutely hated that character. Couldnt really stand Zor either, in fact there were very few if any characters I liked in this installment. I watched every episode religiously because I was hooked on Robotech and didn't want to miss the storyline, but looking back it was painful.
4. Ikki Tousen - I was hoping for another Tenjho Tenge (which strangely I liked) but this was just so over the top. It's an anime which cant decide if it wants to be softcore porn or a fighting show. The plot is sort of silly...high school kids are the embodiment of ancient warriors.
5. Inuyasha - I guess I'd like this one more if it wasnt so kiddied down. The "fly down from the heavens" fight scenes dont do it for me. While some of the side characters are likable, the main character is not. Still, I do watch this one occasionally when its on.
PS I've read a few threads that say not to ask for recommendations, could someone recommend a good thread where one could?

I've watched the first 8 episodes and really enjoyed them. As a matter of fact, I had planned on just streaming the series, but I liked what I've seen so far so much that I decided, screw it, I'll throw the first season in my collection (eventually). But yeah, I've heard that Bleach is one of those shows that gets pretty "filler-tastic" at some point.

All shonen/long running series get "filler-tastic" at one point or another. The question has to be are they good? (And my definition of filler can be a little stricter than others, as for me a filler episode is one that doesn't move the plot, so one of my favorites Case Closed, has a ton of them, but it's more of a crime drama like Law & Order so it's okay, over whether it was in the original source material or not.)

Ergo Ploxy in top 10? Where is this world going? The only thing I liked in the entire series is when Iggy got infected and told Real what a selfish bitch she is. And whats up with some slice of life episodes? Not to mention that nearly half of the series is just stomping on the same place with no progress at all, gimme my time back Ergo...

Hey, he's perfectly entitled to like the show and have it in his top 10. No one is question yours or your ability to have your own favorites so don't get on someone else for it. I think personally a few of his worst choices are not there because of the show being that bad but more or less him just being bored but if those are his choices so be it.

You know, the only difference between your post and his are that you include the little 'but hey, that's just my opinion' disclaimer. Other than that, he is just stating that he (strongly) disagrees that Ergo Proxy is any good. Maybe you ought to give him the benefit of the doubt. Just because he doesn't add a little disclaimer doesn't mean he isn't just stating his own opinion just like you.

And your post was on the topic and served what purpose period? You wanna say it's a case of the pot calling the kettle black with me by all means go ahead. I won't even argue or deny it. perhaps he should get the benefit of the doubt. At least we're on topic though and not just walking in to just spout some pointless "insight", and point fingers, that has nothing to do with the topic at hand. Plus if you claim that my post and his really aren't that different, minus my "disclaimer", then maybe you should give me the benefit of the doubt as well since maybe I'm just stating my own opinion as well as he is.

Wow I am surprised my pick of Ergo Proxy caused such controversy. In my limited exposure to anime I had to rate it in my top 10...it's unique world and charactrs were appealing, however it did seem to lack the soul of other anime I've seen like Code Geass and Last Exile.
Maybe they should make a rule n00bs cant post here unless they've seen at least 50 different anime series or something.
After all, they have enough rules on this board site
