Then that is a different delima. I would say trade off those which you know for sure you will not see again... ... and send your Desert Punk to me >

I don't sell my dvds unless they're 'doubles'- even if the series isn't something I liked, someone I know might enjoy it. Besides, as stated, trade-in shops give such a laughable amount it's hardly worth it.
When I do sell, it's usually via an internet forum- not only do you get a much better payout, but you know it's going to a good anime-lovin' home, not languishing on a used dvd shelf until some kid buys it to make into a mobile or something. |

As a rule of thumb, I tend to keep DVD's for any particular series until I have chance to watch through it twice. If it's not working for me by that point, I'll remove it for selling purposes so I can thin out the inventory a little. The same goes for any duplicate discs I somehow manage to pick up.
Or at least that's how it used to be. Nowadays, with the loss of all Suncoast stores in the area, along with a switch to store credit only for buybacks at FYE (last time I checked anyways), I'm left without a viable place to sell anything. There's a good chance at this point that I'll simply cave in and just give things away to members of my university's anime club next semester. |

I have done that on occasion. A couple of times I've ended up with multiple copies of volume 1 of a few series. Usually this is through buying the first disc and then deciding I want to collect the series, so I then have to buy the box + volume 1. Although once I ordered something from two different stores, because I didn't think both would have the item. Anyway, when we've had video game nights at anime club, I've used these as prizes. I also have a lot of manga I probably won't reread and I'm thinking of starting a manga library in our anime club and allow the students to check them out. Heck, those extra unwanted discs can be part of an anime library if a club you attend has one. ...as long as you're not dumping a 5th copy of MD Geist on them. |

With the collectors mentality I have, there's a better chance Santa comes sliding down my chimney during Kwanzaa than me selling one of my DVD's. The only show I'd consider selling is Yumeria*, but I didn't even pay for that one so I have no real connection to it other than it being one of the first box sets I ever owned; that, though, doesn't take away the "mone mone" or make it a better show in general. I also have a pretty good idea on what I'll like so none of my blind buys or word-of-mouth buys have bit me in the ass. Even though I may only watch it twice in my life, I don't care because it looks cool on my shelf. Also, remember that anime DVD's are collectibles so in a couple of years your stuff may be worth some dough; especially if it becomes a discontinued title (Paranoia Agent anyone?) or if the industry really does collapse.
*short story behind Yumeria: When I say I didn't pay for it I mean I found it. Someone threw it away along with the complete Sorcerer Hunter box set, Nerima Daikon Brothers box set, and volumes 1 and 3 of Shuffle!. As a middle class, hard working, keen-eyed trash man, I felt I would be foolish not to take them home. Up until that point I had only really watched anime on TV with no real knowledge outside of that, but I after I watched those (Shuffle and Sorcerer Hunters mainly) I became hooked. So my entrance into fandom was paved by a guy (or a guys girlfriend) who thoughtlessly threw his DVD's away. Thanks random guy for making me a bigger nerd and having me spend $150 a month to increase the size of my collection .

^--- I think that might be the best story in the long, storied history of stories.
I would never sell anything just because the return would be so low. The only exception is that when I was buying Chrono Crusade I got some extra presents. You see, I ordered vol 1+ artbox, vol 2, vol 3, vol 4, vol 5 and vol 6 through Amazon. Volume 7 was insanely expensive at the time so I was going to wait for another seller to list one. 2-6 came, then 1+artbox came... with 2-7 stuck in there as well. I ended up with the whole set for like $10, and I eBayed away the extras. |

I agree - King of Harts has the best "how I got into anime" story, evah! One detects the fickle finger of fate in it.
By the way, I'm curious as to how much (roughly) you peeps think you could get for your DVDs in your area. Based on non-anime sales I've made in the past, I'm guessing I could probably get $2 per single volume here. I'd be willing to bet that I could get about $8 for my Viridian Collection of Blue Gender (the paper packaging, although in good condition is cheap-looking). Not that I'd do it, but I think I could get $10-$12 for my Desert Punk tinbox. Naturally, all prices are in CDN bucks. |

I've tried selling some of my anime DVD's on Amazon.com but have yet to do so. I've been fairly successful at selling my non anime DVD's and video games. I think I need to go back and rethink how I can get them to be sold.

Before your sell your DVDs to a person's whose kid sister is going to gnaw on the plastic, you may want to check out Anime Corner Store Trade-in Program since the value seems to be about what you'd get anyway. Removes the hassle of actually touching that dirty, dirty cash, running to the bank to deposit it, and checking your balance on your next order to ensure you don't overdraft again.

Didn't know my story was that awesome, but I'll gladly take that title.
I couldn't sell my anime around here if I wanted to; I live in the middle of ruralville, in a state nicknamed the Old Dominion. I'm also not too sure about that trade in program PJ listed because I think I could get more. I went to Amazon because that's the best place I could sell it and for my Eva Platinum + Tin I could probably get $70 (I paid $43), for my Desert Punk Tin I think $50 is reasonable ($28), and I think no less than $25 for the others. I think the fact that all my DVD's are in 'Like New' condition would help me get more money. Or maybe I'm just delusional and greedy, I don't know. |

This is probably not the best additude to have for keeping DVDs around... having been collecting my library for about 10 years, I can safely say that only a small handful of titles actually become worth more than their MSRP. More importantly, anime is a niche enough product that you'll probably have to sell online to find anyone who'll give you that price for your old discs. Never treat your collection as an investment- you'll be sorely dissapointed when you go to cash in. |

This is the reason i tend to keep my anime also and you never know when you might get that urge to watch something you might not.

I must say that it's a very rare case that I sell anything- I don't have enough money to guy whatever I want so I usually think a lot before buying anything.
The problem starts when I get something that I didn't like- lots of my classmates know that I'm m&a fan so they thy to buy me something connected with my hobby. I appreciate that and on that way I got really good ones (like Claudine! manga and GITS boxet )but sometimes I don't know what to do with it. Recently there was for me a chance to sell Daphne and Ray the Animation - the worst ones that I get. Somietimes I sell or give away doubles from my collection ( since one publisher released very cheap anime movies I don't remember how many Perfect Blue DVD's I got). Recently I got second Ghibi's set- for or five films. Next six minth I don't have to think about presents for my cousins. |

That is a pretty darn cool story. I wish I could find boxes of awesome anime in the trash. I had to pay good money for my Shuffle discs! Personally, I'm very hesitant to sell anything but I enjoy a wide variety of anime so blind buys very rarely end up being unwanted and I tend to re-watch things a lot. (My favorite series get re-watched several times per year.) If you're going to sell though, I'd suggest going for trade in value unless something is really rare. Nothing wrong with selling something if you really don't want it anymore but just make sure you won't regret it. |
