Being the otaku I am, I was always aware that there were stupid/stubborn people within the anime fandom but since I never really go on anime forums too much I never really had to deal with them. But today in an Anime Club I go to I somehow got into a discussion with this semi-annoying guy about Dragon Ball. He was asking me how I felt on the different series and then he brought up AF. I told him it was fake, and no matter how much evidence I threw at him he seemed to think that it existed due to some "Video" he had seen. I was wondering if anyone here had any advice for me. I was figuring just ignoring him next time, and just let him stay in his deluded world.

If you've provided him evidence and made a rational argument and the guy still wont listen to you, then it's best just to drop it, IMO. You can't win against irrational people: it's like talking to a brick wall. I'd just drop it and avoid the subject in the future.

Never underestimate the power of google. When ever you need to look up quick info about anything just go to google and you'll find what you need. After a quick search I got this page. Hope that helps you.
P.S. another quick way to figure this out is ANN's encyclopedia. If you notice there is no entry for this series. This is simply because it does not exists. |

I remember meeting an obsessive Death Note fan at a public library once. I was looking through the manga trying to find something to read when she came over and addressed me, we talked for a bit and she led the conversation to Death Note, and eventually to the topic of spoiler[L's death]. I probably should've left the subject when she said L and Light make the cutest couple but I didn't, and when she said that spoiler[L didn't really die], being the kind of person I am I couldn't leave well enough alone and said spoiler["Yeah, he did. Rem killed him deader than something that's been run over repeatedly and shot in the head with a large fire arm."] She went into this huge rant about fanfics, alternate endings, and videos she'd seen online and some BS about there being proof that spoiler[L's still alive] if you watch after the credits in ep 37 and in the OVA as well. Usually that wouldn't be so bad, except that by this point I had apparently said enough in a single sentence to warrant her literally yelling the later part of her argument in a volume that the entire single floor library could hear quite well. By the end of her tantrum she actually threw a copy of the 9th volume of the manga at me that hit me square in the forehead. Needless to say we were both kicked from our library and told not to come back for a while...
[NOTE: In the future, use spoiler tags when dealing with major plot points like these. This time I was nice and stuck the tags in for you, but next time the post will be booted.] |

I find a firm open handed slap to the face to be effective.

The problem here is oddly enough something that was explored in another anime xxxHOLiC but they mention how every person's reality is not true reality, instead reality through perception and experience. So you get die hard anime fans that fall in love with something so much, that it will affect their every day life, and therefore move from source of entertainment to life style or addiction. I would say the most American version of this would be the WWE. This is my opinion on this anyway.
p.s. I am on your side, it is a little amusing but I do my best not to judge. |

Yea a while ago i was dealing with someone saying Dragonball GT was the best anime ever and the best Dragonball series. I easily and rationally explained why it wasn't but he just complained that i wasnt a fan and just said some stupid things. Young ignorant DB fans are some of the worst and most annoying. A lot of younger anime fans in general dont seem to understand things unless its violent or they have big boobs other wise its not good. So to rationalize with that really is just not possible. Just give up and let him believe what he wants.

Wow. Sorry to hear that. Some people seem so obsessive about their "fandom" that it seems to ruin relationships with others. Me, I just watch a show and enjoy it. |

Welcome to the internet, where the obvious response to every problematic situation is a suggestion of violence. - abunai |

You forgot beyond that the obligatory insult about how much said person sucks at life and everything they do. I mean you can't just smack them, you have to mock them as well to get the emotional sting. Because as you know such a horrible and painful internet insult will no doubt permanently scar the other person for the rest of their life and thus elevate the insulter into a higher rating of coolness. As for me I personally imagine them as being like an online messenger service such as MSN Live or YIM or whatever one you like to use. See they all have a "mute" option basically. I mentally just click that option and then ignore them. Regardless of the topic. People have their opinions and they are entitled to them even if I don't like/agree with them. When asked I'll of course defend my own opinions and explain them but if the person in question is obviously just not listening nor cares, or unwilling to even listen to another opinion, then the easiest way to deal with such a person is just mute them, smile, and just walk away and ignore them. Doing it when they are in mid sentences really hammers that fact home more too heh.
No no no you are misunderstanding. See the he was clarifying that the proper obvious response for any sort of internet problem is the threat of or an actual act of violence. The internet itself is still of course made for pron. |

I know you enjoy being just oh so wondrously clever but if I could interrupt for just a moment, you do recognize that I am obviously making a joke right? See, the giveaway is my choice of words. Note how I suggested a slap to the face, an often humorous manner of striking someone (supplementary information: see any slapstick comedy ever). Had a intended to seriously suggest that you assault those that disagree with you I likely would have opted for something more forceful such as punching them or 'beating they ass'. |

Stick a banana in their tailpipe.
It's easy for one to "defend" their beliefs/passions, and it's more difficult to converse with another person who literally takes it upon themselves to change your mind. But we can't have that, now can we? Telling someone "well, at least we can agree to disagree" seems to add more fuel to the fire. I've seen many take it as a condescending remark, which literally turns them into angry people. Walking away from that, and it just gets even worse. It's difficult to judge this "point of no return". A rule of thumb (which I ignore too many times myself) is actually reading/listending and understanding what was said. For within those words lies the very warning stating your opinion no longer matters. That's when one should walk away. A courteous "I'm sorry, but I gotta run but we can talk about this later." works very well in person-to-person situations. For online venues, find another thread and engross yourself into another discussion. "Walk away", as it were. Anyone dumb enough to "follow" you to the thread will often be dealt with by the mods. Good luck. There are some people out there who feel the internet's anonymous shield grants them the right to be arrogant, rude, and unfriendly but end up being timid, shy, and introverted people in real life. I'll never understand these people. |

I thought that abunai was joking around with you, and knew that you were joking. Then again, I'm not him. I could never have said the quotable quotes he said. Anyway, it's fine to ignore them, but it's also fun to agree with them in a twisted manner. It's like showing them that they're wrong without actually telling them. Self-realization hurts. |

I ignore them. They arent worth it. Sometimes people are so stupid they deserve to be treated like children. Their opinions mean nothing to me. N.O.T.H.I.N.G. When they decide to grow up and open their eyes and ears maybe then their words will be worthy enough to grace my eardrums. Until then I dont hear anything.
