Just for fun and giggles, I came up with my very own "Ten Anime Convention Commandments" and I just wanted to ask my fellow Anime fans for comments and criticism on them:

The Ten Anime Convention Commandments
-------------------------------------------------------
1 - Thou shalt book your Con tickets in advance (especially where Anime Expo, Otakon and Anime Central are concerned)
2 - Thou shalt not lust after scantily-clad female Cosplayers (unless you want your ass kicked by Con Security!)
3 - Thou shalt not count Pocky as one of your 5-a day! (especially Strawberry flavored Pocky)
4 - Thou shalt not paddle male Congoers with a Yaoi Paddle (especially a huge-ass one, if you'll pardon the pun)
5 - Thou shalt not also glomp a complete stranger without giving you their permission (this especially applies to Con Guests; in particular Vic Mignogna and Yuri Lowenthal!)
6 - Thou shalt, for the love of Kami-Sama himself, bathe or shower at least once a day during the period that the Con is running!
7 - Thou shalt not take photos of Cosplayers without at least having the courtesy to ask them!
8 - Thou shalt haggle for goods in the Dealer's Hall at least once during the Con!
9 - Thou shalt have courtesy for your fellow Congoers (especially if you're holding a Con Party in your hotel room!)
10 - Finally, thou shalt enjoy thyself during the Con!

I know it is supposed to be the 10 Commandments, but may I add: Thou shall respect the building in which the con is taking place. Pretty much every con I've been to has involved some idiots stealing elevator lights, damaging elevators in various ways, breaking escalators, trashing rooms, plus several other offenses that make all con goers look bad. It's pathetic when the immaturity of a few try to ruin the reputation of an overall mature and respectful majority.

That's a good Commandment and I don't know why I never thought of that one...

I wish more cons implemented an age limit. Maybe not 18 or whatever Dragoncon does, but enough to keep obnoxious children out. Maybe 16 is a good age. I've only been a few cons, but brainless kids running around seems to be a staple of them.

You're kidding, right? This would be one, if not the, reason to go in the first place.

But conventions should do us the favor to respect this commandment:
Coventioneers shall not adorn cosplay costumes to those not resembling the anime character.

Sadly, I quit going to conventions long ago. Those that frequent them are, um, well... freakin' weird now. Not to be insulting, but I just can't get into the sub-culture these fans adhere to.

I wouldn't want to get arrested for dropping an idiot to the floor who took it upon themselves to hit me with a paddle, friend or not.

Good idea, I agree with most of them.

1. Booking in a advance is a good idea, but booking a hotel in advance is also a smart idea.

2. I am serious with this one, you will kicked out if you act like that. If one thinks the attire is well crafted, be polite and comment that you think the attire is cool looking or something.

3. Pocky is candy, not wholesome food. Proper nutrition should be followed if you anywhere. All Pockey is a pretzel with sugar in it.

4. How about this, Don't paddle anyone and respect other people's personal space. It's not nice to hit random people for no reason and you could get kicked out. Not everyone is okay with being hit, so just don't hit all together.

5. Gloomping is unexcpetable unless the person gives their permission. Glooming random people or even actors could result in getting one kicked out or become beaten up by the person that was glomped. I recomend that no one glomp anyone unless that person says it is all right to do so.

6. Personal hygene should the con goer's top goal. I hate to say this( because I feel like a mother or doctor), but one should brush their teeth twice a day and bathe at least once a day. I like to think its common sense, but I am not even sure anymore.

7. Taking photo's of a person without their consent is something no one should do. I remember reading in Anizona 2004 that is someone is caught doing that, they will be kicked out the convention for the entire time the convention is being held. Ask politely and they might say yes. But if they say no, leave and don't bother that person again.

8. If one is going to haggle, here is two things to remember.

A. Be polite and accept what ever the dealer says. If he states he or she doesn't haggle, don't push it. Either buy the item or leave. This could easily ugly real quickly, so one might just want to leave if he or she states no.

B. If they do agree. Politeness and good manners are key. Also, don't drop the price higher than three dollars (depending on the product) and no matter what, accept whatever the price it becomes in the end. An arguement with a item dealer isn't a good idea, because they can easily call security.

9. I agree, courtesy should be followed during the convention and when at one's hotel. Having a loud party at one a.m. will get someone who is trying to sleep very angery and have hotel security to stop the party. Also, don't be very loud or yell for no reason at the hotel or convention. It's just plain rude no matter what the time of day it is.

10. Enjoying the convention should be the central focus, but don't forget to be polite to others (including convention staff, dealers, hotel staff and security). Above all, have fun and be safe though.

11. Thou shall pick up their own trash and actually throw it away in garbage cans properly. There is nothing worse than seeing someone littering and not even trying to attempt to pick up the garbage. Please consider how much work this is for the convention staff, hotel cleaning service and others. No one is ever to busy to pick up their own garbage, even if they are at a covention or hotel.

PetrifiedJello; there's open lusting after female Cosplayers and doing it in secret! Laughing

Teriyaki Terrier; I definitely like your take on the Anime Convention Ten Commandments, especially numbers 8 and 11.

BorgmanJayce: Thank you. I've only been to one convention and the experience was actually pleasent. But that was about five years ago though. If times have changed that drastically, then the conventions should seriously make much tougher rules.

In short: If one is going to a covention, just don't cause trouble of any kind. Its not worth being kicked out of a convention and wasting the money spent.

Can we add a sub-commandment to this one?
"Thou shalt not be scantily clad if thou is not one who anyone wants to see scantily-clad"
Example: try to imagine Rosie O'Donnel cos-playing as Revy from Black Lagoon Mad

I think a grand rule-of-thumb can summarize these commandments in one swift notion; Thou shalt not be a selfish and self-centered bastard at anime conventions: for we are not alone at anime conventions, and our world does not revolve just around us the anime fandom.

Like Teriyaki, I can agree with most of these myself.

1. This year is going to be my fourth Anime Expo, and I've always made it a priority to book in advance, mainly at the earliest time possible. It saves money and it actually gives you an excuse to take time off from work Wink

2. The second one I believe you mean Thou shalt not harass or touch scantily clad female cosplayers - unless you are their significant other (the touching part). Even then, if you can't keep your hands off her, get a room, yeesh.

3. I eat Pocky all the time, so it's no biggy whether I have it or not at the Expo. Hell it's probably a lot cheaper not to eat it there anyway.

4. Hopefully I will never have to deal with a yaoi paddle. If I do get spanked I'm going to take a picture of that person and stick it on photobucket or Myspace for all the world to see: this person spanked me.

5. Hopefully I won't have to deal with this one either. I'm a wrestler so I probably would tackle anybody who tries to glomp me, regardless of whether it's a boy or a girl. I am entitled to defend myself.

6. Since I have been commuting to Anime Expo since last year that is no problem.

7. So what happens when they're posing for the crowd? That counts as they've given permission right? Though for me I've been asking, so I think I have been adhering to this commandment, I would think.

8. On the last day when things are cheaper Wink

9. Yes, please.

10. I am hoping this year will be as enjoyable as last year.

I think they are still pleasant even after several years of attending, but they have changed. The explosion in attendance numbers is part of the problem I think. Anime Central would be my best example for this. It has really outgrown its location. When there are more people and less space in which to operate people need to be more courteous. Unfortunately, the amount of courtesy has not grown with the crowd.

As I plan on attending my first con later this month, this information should come in handy.
Off to the Expo yourself, Borgman?

Impossible. My hanging, drooling tongue gives me away every time.

Luckily, it also provides an "oil slick" upon my getaway from the "Hey you! Come here!" yell I get from the rent-a-cop trying to stop me.
