Licensing issue. Pretty much the same with how anime licensing works - the publishers of the music in Japan hadn't really thought about a global business model and they just go with what works before, which is cutting up the rights by countries/regions and sell it to someone else based in that country/region instead of publishing it themselves. So unless someone in North America license the music for sale and put it on the American iTMS store, you will not find it.

Actually, it's because, as of April 7, iTunes is offering all of its music DRM free. So now, all iTunes music purchases can be copied and played without retrictions. However, all music that they could not get the rights to sell DRM free has been removed from the iTunes store. It's sad though because Avex just released ayu's new album "NEXT LEVEL" on there just 2 weeks earlier and now it's not there.

Yeah, it's horrible that they got rid of all the JPOP. That's where I was getting most of my stuff from. It was cool that you could get JPOP so cheap. Now I'll have to start saving for those expensive imports again. There are still some good artists left though, like LM.C, L'Arc, Utada, Girugamesh, Mucc, Gackt and Miyavi to name a few. Hopefully they work something out.

Oh yeah, they did have some Yoko Kanno. I don't know if they still do. I'm pretty sure that all the Ayu is gone though, along with all the other Avex folks. I had bought a lot of Namie Amuro and BoA, they aren't there now. Well, BoA is, but only her English album. I wonder if they'll get them back one day in the future...
(BTW, thanks for the avatar compliment! I loves Gravi. )

UPDATE!!! Hey, I was just checking out the iTunes store and all the J-Pop is back...and DRM free! I was totally depressed when they took off all the songs when the store went DRM free. You can upgrade your existing songs to a higher quality version or just buy the songs. Thanks iTunes!

It sounds like you already got everything you were looking for, but if you ever find that something is missing you might want to try the Japanese iTunes...
Last time I checked you still need to buy a Japanese gift card if you don't have an active Japanese bank account (which can be difficult to setup outside Japan)...

To see the list of J-Pop songs, just go to the itunes store, click on browse, then click on music, and select j-pop. It's actually a fairly large selection.
As for getting songs from the Japanese store, that's likely more difficult.
