Ugh. It's depressing something as completely and utterly irredeemable as Twilight could remotely be a catalyst for a new anime boom, but if it gets Vampire Knight licensed and starts pumping funds into the industry again, well...whatever works, I guess.
As for the question, I definitely don't think giant robots are played out. New series are just as enjoyable as they always have been. TTGL goes without saying, but Macross Frontier, Strain, and even Sora Kake Girl are all very enjoyable series that also bring something either new or nostalgic (or both!) to the genre. |

I think the plots are what is played out and not the genre itself. I mean if the genre itself was truly dead why would shows like Gurren Lagann or Gundam still be getting so many fans new and old? I think the problem is they use the same generic plot device from one mecha show to the next. They need to diversify a bit and perhaps make the mecha the supporting character as opposed to the main character. Sort of like a Patlabor for the 21st century heh. |

And yet nothing I listed has a plot that's remotely played out. o_O Same goes for Code Geass, on top of that. Political dramas are way too few and far between. |

Corner Gas is pretty typical of Canadian comedy shows I have to say (post kids in the hall) and I enjoy that type of humour more too. It's why I'm a fan of Britcoms too. I like a good slapstick moment, or the odd crude joke well placed, but wit and sarcasm in context is what really gets me laughing. On Yugioh!- It's okay to like it man! I love it for how over the top and ridiculous it is. I get tonnes of laughs out of it, and I enjoy it for what it is. I'm not looking for anything serious when I watch yugioh, and I don't expect more than what it delivers. In both sub and dub it delivers much amusement and good times. And what more can you ask from a show about an ancient Egyptian card game played by a kid who's possessed by a pharaoh and 'villains' like Pegasus? ! |

Well since you mention political drama....one prime example of a show that had the mecha aspect as the supporting character, and was a political drama show if ever there was one, is Gasaraki. Though for the average fan I think it's a bit too deep and requires too much thinking. Don't get me wrong, I love the show but for the casual fan....I'd say do a show like it but make it just a touch lighter in nature. Maybe throw in a touch of humor. |

Vampire Knight would be a hit (not nessicarly because it's amazingly good) but more that it would fuel the current vampire craze right now. And even though I don't like it as much now, I enjoyed the first season, it was pretty, angst, and well... pretty angsty.
Like comfort food anime, I might buy it. And I love the bunny cartoons. They make me laugh every time :] |

My point exactly. In nearly ten years, you can count how many mecha-political dramas there are by making a peace sign. Maybe Flag, but that's kind of pushing it on the mecha front. |

Yu-Gi-Oh!: If you're enjoying Yu-Gi-Oh!, more power to you! I've recently rediscovered my undying love for all things Digimon through watching the original Japanese. Digimon Adventure was AWESOME.
Vampire Knight: I agree about Vampire Knight being potentially big because of the whole "vampires are smexy" thing going on with the teenage girls nowadays. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy me a good Anne Rice book occasionally, but the vampire thing has become way overdone. And Vampire Knight? Just because it's popular doesn't make it a good show. c-c I'm pretty sure Yuki is one of the most boring female leads I've seen in awhile. Mecha Shows: Long time anime fan, new-time mecha fan. Thanks, Gurren Lagann! Gundam 00! You make my day. Anybody have any recommendations for some older mecha-titles, maybe 80s to early 90s era? |

A Manifesto from a Rabid Mecha fan.
Mecha isn't played out, Mecha anime has been a trailblazer thru the ages... Since the days of Tetsujin 28/Gigantor and Giant Robo (thanks Mitsuteru Yokoyama), this genre has evolved, from the remote controlled days, then from the mind of one of the greatest manga/anime creator..Mr Go Nagai, the seed was planted for the creation of a genre that would envelop the world in its gospel... Mazinger Z (action, adventure, comedy, a bit of romance and fanservice, over the top heroes and dastarly villain fighting for control of Earth on a weekly basis. Other creations like Getter Robo (The original Combiner), Getter Robo G, Kotetsu Jeeg, Great Mazinger and Grendizer followed a little after that Tadao Nagahama added deeper plots with his Romantic Robot Trilogy (Chodenji Robo Combattler V, Chodenji Machine Voltes V and Tosho Daimos) after that another awesome creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, who worked in Super Robot anime (Yusha Raideen, Daitarn 3, Mukeki Chojin Zambot 3, Space RunAway Ideon), created the next evolutionary step with Mobile Suit Gundam, after that Real Robot anime like Armored Trooper Votoms, Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Genesis Climber Mospeada among others filled the airways... the 70's and 80's were a golden age for mecha anime... until Evangelion appeared and with existencialist storyline almost broke the genre with their brethen like Argento Soma, Devassdasy, Raxephon and Fafner, thankfully the Brave and Eldoran shows keep the tradition in the younger generation of fans, the ocassional Macross and AU Gundam series and revivals of the classics like Shin and New Getter Robo, Kotetsu Shin Jeeg and Mazinkaiser, Gainax made Gurren Lagaan, probably as an Apology for Evangelion, returning Super Robot shows to their roots and now with the upcoming Shin Mazinger Anime, we have gone full circle, we who love their all out action/adventure plots. Super Robot & Mecha anime have spread the gospel of anime thruout the world (althought tv broadcast standards keep these shows out of the US/UK without some heavy editing, cutting their effectiveness). Whatever people say, we Super Robot fans love our out of this world plots, kicka$$ heroes, dastardly villains and robots with enough firepower to burn the world to a crisp, it's escapist entertainment of the 1st order, IMHO it sure beats the lolita filled moe pablum that anime producers are trying to stuff down our collective gullet these days, I want anime with a sense of Adventure, epic in scope, the ultimate interpretation of Good VS Evil and the Heroic Ideal and totally kicka$$... it's time to Shatter the heavens with our drills and fight the power!!!! And yes my first anime was Mazinger Z and don't get me started with space opera like Space BattleShip Yamato and Captain Herlock. My god, am I sick of vampires. And I have to agree, Yuki doesn't seem to do a whole lot. I don't think that'll stop the show from being popular should it get licensed, however. (That said, the manga is my guilty pleasure. ) By the bye, does anyone else realize that 95% of vampire romances are basically necrophilia? I mean, with a few exceptions (like VK), the vampires are dead, right? Mecha-wise, I was a major Gundam Wing nut back when it was on Toonami. It was terribly silly, had a truly awful dub (What in the hel-eck am I doing?), and I loved every edited minute of it. I don't know how it would stand up now, but give it a try! And randomly, I love Corner Gas. Davis makes my day. |

Zeta Gundam. Probably helps if you've seen the original movie trilogy, but I haven't yet and it was great. |

omg now I'm wondering how awesome it would be if Digital Devil Saga (another SMT game) could be turned into an anime of sorts. It would probably be way slow, but could also be totally sweet XD |

I'm a little surprised to Kuroshitsuji mentioned, though it is a show I very much enjoy. The mood and set up don't really seem like mainstream material. I agree with Soul Eater. If FUNimation sells an uncut version and doesn't butcher it when editing (which I don't think they would), and if they can find somewhere to air it, I think it would do very well on T.V.
Now, the main reason for this post, I am thrilled to see someone mention Liar Game. I don't know if it's mainstream material either, but fans of L might like how tired Akiyama looks. The characters are pretty interesting, and the female lead, Nao, somehow manages to turn her ridiculously foolish honesty into an advantage. The story is episodic, but there is a definite undercurrent of plot, and the person who wrote of it here was being serious when she said it's fun to try and figure it out. So, maybe it could be big. Just one problem. It doesn't have an anime. A poorly performed live-action drama, yes, but no anime. |

i'll point to Reideen. it was your typical rehashed mecha series that comes out every 6 months. sometimes they are more buried amongst the fansubs, but they are always there.
i thought gurren lagann did a great job of spicing up the genre. |

I could easily see D.Grey-Man becoming a hit, but it has to be properly released. It would fit in nicely with shows like Naruto and Bleach. With over 100 episodes so far, and each one reasonably strong, it could do fairly well. But it needs a proper TV release where the general public can find it. Ideally, it should be run daily because that would give it the best exposure.
Unfortunately, the usual TV outlets for this sort of anime are disappearing. And without those, nothing could become a hit. |
