There's one thing I wonder about when it comes to adapting a manga as a TV series. Obviously, manga is almost always black and white, and the only things that are in color are the covers usually. So my question is this...when animators are doing the designs and preparation work, when they do colorations for characters and things, I imagine if they can, they go from colored official artwork, but what if some characters never showed up in color in any form? Do they have to guess, or does the mangaka give them color suggestions?

The behavior is not consistent. I am aware of the following occurring during anime production.
1. The anime production team asks the manga artist for designs that include colors. 2. The anime character designer, who is often charged with reducing the manga designs to a simple enough form to be consistently reproduced across cels, makes up the colors. 3. They look at the various colored materials and choose from there. Number 2 can often lead to the manga artist adopting the hair color, sometimes even if he had a different one shown or detailed in the manga. |
