I have watched 4 episodes of this anime. I saw that Origination is good so I wanted to watch the prior series first but this anime, Aria, sucks.
It is so boring and they do nothing. Does it get any better or should /i just quit now? Thanks. |

If you think Aria The Animation isn't interesting, then it's not worth your while to check out the other Aria series. They're just more of the same.
Personally, I'd say Aria is one of my all-time top favorite anime, but I understand it's not to everyone's taste. Four eps. of the first season should be enough to tell if that's the case for you. |

Yeah, you might want to keep in mind that it's a slice-of-life anime. Nothing is suppose to "happen". The goal of any good slice-of0life is to portray people's lives in a realist and non action packed way. I've been told that Aria is for the type of person who enjoys "people watching". I guess this is the same for all slice-of-life anime though. I would say that if you don't like it just move on. But I've heard that it's really good (one of the top things on my want to see list) so I'd try and give it another chance.

It's kinda interesting but I think hellfire points out the radical difference between "the Origination" and the first two. This is only the second time I've seen this pointed out.

The difference between the first two and the OVA and "the Origination" is that "the Animation" and "the Natural" are about Akari and Aqua whereas "the Origination" is only about the three girls; no magic history, no cats, no secret places. All the wonder and mystery are gone unless you count where the heck Alicia's fiance' came from.
You're point that only those who've gone through the first two would watch the third is well made but, for me, the elements that drew me in and that made Aria so unique were totally missing in the third which basically beat itself to a logical conclusion. The only real surprise, and delightfully so, was episode nine which proved that even though the story had changed they still knew how to tell it. Aria, to me, is for people who appreciate the simple joy of sitting on a dock on a bright sunny day and watching the world go by at its own pace. The Origination while pleasant simply didn't have that magic. |

I like quiet, thoughtful, slice-of-life anime, but I didn't like Aria the Animation. Except for a couple of episodes, it didn't touch my emotions at all.

I'm always doing some 'people watching.' If I didn't, they'd steal packages from my doorstep or park their car in front of my driveway  .
To comment on the slice-o-life thing, what intrigues me about slife series' is exactly as you put it: watching people's lives play out. But with Aria, there's just, nothing... Everything about their lives is picture perfect, their world is perfect, no hardships or struggles, no anything that would be in average people's lives. Its just the girls rowing their boats around talking about how beautiful everything is. Well, okay, maybe that last sentence is a bit of an exaggeration, but only a bit. I got through most of the first season but see no reason to stick around. |

That equals my feelings about the show. As I said in my review, it's "a world without shadows". One episode where there was something going on emotionally was the episode in which spoiler[that girl was "punishing" her left hand for not pulling its weight]. |

Nothing happens? Akari's frequently gets her hair pulled and quite often is verbally reprimanded by Aika! ^_^ I love what I've seen of the various Aria series (after buying Nozomi's release of the first series and part 1 of Natural, and I've since seen Origination). The characters are good, and I like the slow exploration of the city, its surroundings, and its residents (the normal ones and spoiler[the magical ones]), and the history of Aqua. A number of the anime that I've watched since 1991 have pulled sad tears out of me, but I'm not certain if anything prior to Aria's managed to get happy tears out of me. |

I've only seen the animation, and I don't think there was any magic in that, except for spoiler[the time-travel episode]. What was it in the first season produced 'happy tears'? (I normally think of myself as being quite sensitive!)

That's what I meant about sitting on a dock looking out over the water listening to it lap up on the shore or on under a tree in a park on a bright, sunny day, listening to the breeze in the branches. If you can lose yourself in that moment then when something very simple happens like a fish jumping or a bird flying by it's seems noteworthy for some reason <shrug>. If you haven't tried it, I recommend it for an hour so one slow summer day.
I think Aria was designed to be a place you (we) could go to and leave everything else outside for a little bit and just go with the moment and if something wonderful (that is full of wonder) happens like spoiler[finding out that President Aria is a magical cat who's got an "in" with the head god on Aqua] it's sorta special. <shrug> The Origination however was, indeed, about three girls rowing their gondolas around. This was the first anime I though was safe enough to show my daughter. She thought it was boring. Slow pacing but very wholesome.
