I think the comparison between the OP of Crest/Banner and "Star Trek music" is somewhat accurate myself. Not that the former isn't a good piece though- it sets out the theme of the series quite aptly. However, to me it wasn't nearly as memorable as a particular piece which sometimes played in the background whilst the characters weren't in battle (I believe it first plays when the young Jinto watches in awe as spoiler[his planet comes under attack]). A slow and uplifting string number which could instantly turn a mundane scene into something rousing. |

I think the most epic soundtracks come from Yoko Kanno and Joe Hisaishi! They always seem to make classics and true hits in every sense of the word. I was blown away by Joe Hisaishi's work i Princess Mononoke and Escaflowne is my favorite Yoko Kanno soundtrack!

Well, I've discovered a new favorite lately :3 Taku Iwasaki, whom you might know best for Gurren Lagann but the rest of his resume is damn impressive too, guy knows how to make great epic pieces, I just love the dude for this! It's easy enough to say that the Gurren Lagann soundtrack was epic, but his other stuff is great too, especially Oban Star-Racers (ironically, the one track in Gurren Lagann sounds really really similar to one in Oban Star Racers). I've yet to see the Kekkaishi anime, but I do love the manga and it's one of my favorites, this should only be more incentive to watch the anime if you haven't.

Definetely have to mention Toward The Terra here- this is a massive, sweeping sci-fi epic spanning decades and dealing with the plight of two civilizations at war, and it has the soundtrack to match.

The Planetes soundtrack had some great stuff - long tone-cluster chords, very futuristic. A shame the OST CD seems to be unavailable.
