Should I try to track down the sub only AnimEigo DVDs or go with the newer ADV releases??

I'm leaning towards the AnimEigo DVDs since it looks like they spent a lot of money & time on restoring & remastering.

Since the ADV releases are a few years newer, did they just buy the AnimEigo remasters & just slap on a dub (& better looking cover art)??

The nostalgic cool of having Mari Ijima be Minmay again has some appeal, but I'd like the ones that LOOK better...

Thanks!

The ADV releases are the ones you want. While it didn't look like they did much to enhance the video quality, the sound has definitely been remastered and the dub is solid. (It even has Mari Ijima reprising her Japanese role as Minmei in English - a fantastic gimmick.) Those volumes are also completely unedited, sub/dub, have some informative production notes amongst the Extras, and include all 36 episodes on just seven volumes. They're also probably much easier and cheaper to find; a basic search on Amazon showed that you could obtain all seven volumes for <$65, not counting shipping.

Actually, check TRSI. I think they were in the bargain bin at $3-4 a pop.

Thanks for the replies so far... Has anyone out there seen both the ADV & AnimEigo versions? Thoughts...

I see that TRSI has an ADV promotion going on right now, may make my move soon.

I asked the same question recently:
animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=58515&highlight=

It seems that the Japanese dub might be slightly better in the Anime Ego version, but everything else is better in the ADV one.

Thanks for that, I did do a forum search but nothing exact or even close came up. Your thread would've been pretty useful & I likely wouldn't have needed to post this one... Maybe I needed to clean up my search string??

The remastered edition by AnimEigo is a must own. It's Japanese with subtitle only, but AnimEigo's subtitles are good and the production notes in the cases are excellent. ADV's dub isn't worth that purchase.

I've actually been watching my AnimEigo boxset recently.

Makes me sad is what surrounds Do You Remember Love and presumably Flash Back 2012, caught up in those legal disputes. DYRL is easily of the best anime features to come from the 80's, and Flash Back 2012 would make a good extra on a DVD release.

Hey, I'm with you there...

I finally watched DYRL on CR & it was pretty enjoyable, much better than "Clash of the Bionoids" Wink

Still haven't seen Flash Back 2012 - someone had a DVD on the 'bay that I bid on & lost a couple weeks ago, I know it's rather short but I'd really like to see it.

I'm about a 1/3 of the way through Macross 7 on CR & it's not horrible - that's where I also watched Macross Zero & Frontier, I'd love to have all that stuff on R1 media of some kind...
