Gomen in advance if this is an inappropiate place to post this. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop

I got this e-mail from a friend on a Gunbuster mailing list earlier tonight. Seems as though Manga Entertainment has just lost the rights to Gunbuster. If this is true, the rights to this classic anime title is up for grabs again.

Well, it seems as if my worst nightmares have come to fruition. Manga Entertainment has dropped Gunbuster from their catalogue. It can no longer be found anywhere in their database. And the e-mails I have written to them have gone unanswered (as usual). As to whether this was because Gainax pulled the license from Manga or simply because they never bothered to renew it is anybodys' guess. So, for the time being, I guess the answer to any questions regarding Gunbuster's release on DVD is "Who knows?"

In the meantime, I have sent a few e-mails to AnimEigo, ADV Films, Bandai Entertainment, and Geneon in regards to acquiring the license if indeed Manga has lost it. I have only heard from AnimEigo so far, and they seemed to be interested. Given their top-notch work on restoring Super Dimension Fortress Macross, I'd love for them to get the license. However, it's more likely that Bandai would get it because of their past association with helping Gainax fund the series.

Still considering this as a rumour, but given Manga's shitty releases and what not, it's only a good thing I geuss. I would like to see this though!

More than likely they dropped it since they can't dub it, they didn't bother to renew it

Since it's a GAINAX release which Manga got at fire sale prices from U.S. Renditions way back when but which GAINAX feels it can charge top dollar for since the GAINAX label now has such cachet among the North American anime fandom niche, it's probably a simple case of "Manga couldn't afford to renew the rights". I'm sure that Robert Woodhead probably would love to put it out, but, if Manga couldn't afford it anymore, there's no way that AnimEigo would be able to pay what GAINAX will be asking.

Assuming that this is a simple case of the rights lapsing and nothing more, then it's Manga's own fault for not releasing a DVD sooner.
