Due to the strength of her Macross Plus, Vision of Escaflowne & Brain Powered (which I bet the majority here haven't heard) OSTs I have to go with Yoko Kanno over Yuki Kajiura. As far as I'm concerned Kaijura isn't on the same tier as Kanno, more like one below with other great composers like Toshihiko Sahashi, Kawai Kenj (though at the rate he has been going lately he will move up to my top tier with Iwasaki and Kanno), Tenmon, Takanashi Yasuharu's & Satou Naoki for starters.
Also this Kajiura hasn't done popular/good anime argument is ridiculous, Brain Powered is a top 3 Kanno OST and it's a horrible anime. |

Big flop of an anime too It's just that Kanno is somewhat a favorite by the big directors like Watanabe, Kawamori, Tomino. Why, her next project is the 25th anniversary anime of Macross by Kawamori, another "big" one. If any person were to choose between a high paying job and a low paying job doing the same thing, I bet that person would favor the one with better pay. I guess it's the logical thing to do. |

Yoko Kanno, unquestionably. Tank! and The Real Folk Blues are still legendary among Anime ST fans, and if that's garnered Kanno some fame and money, I don't think we should all be depressed.

Tough call. Another coincidence comparison for me, my favourite OPs are Cowboy Bebop's Tank! and Madlax's Hitomi no Kakera, so I'm a bit split on this one. I mean, Yoko Kanno has got to be credited for the brilliant Cowboy Bebop score, but jazz is very much improvisation, so she couldn't have done it without the Seatbelts. Still, it seems that Yuki Kajiura is way more flexible not only when it comes to setting but also with all those FictionJunctions. I gotta admit, even after listening to some Yuki Kajiura scores her work as half of FictionJunction Yuuka has got to be a stand-out. So, once again, coincidence as to my two favourite OPs dividing me here.
Agree. Some anime even with Kajiura composing the score make me yawn. |

Macross Frontier episode 2 from the 2:44 min mark to 6:44 min mark shows why Kanno > Kajiura. Perfect and just epic music for that scene, about 3-4 different tracks are played I think. Frontier is shaping up to be one of her best.

I've watched the anime that both Yuki kajiura and Kanno have worked on, but I'de have to go with Yuki Kajiura just because her music makes more of an impact on me and brings out the emotion of any scene it is used on. I don't even remember what Cowboy Bebop sounds like, though i loved the anime and it's definitely in my Top Ten.
Just a matter of opinion and preference. And lack of variety would put Linkin' Park, Metallica, Iron Maiden etc out of business if it were a huge issue.(I dislike linkin park in any case) edit: woops for bringing up an inactive topic |

I vote for Kajiura as well.
Kanno isn't bad, but her wide range comes at the cost of greatness in individual tracks IMO. The BGM of GITS: SAC struck me as very good. Surprise, when I bought the OST, it turned out that only a few tracks were actually worth listening to more than once, and only the two Origa songs were epic quality. Same goes for Macross Frontier's music. Some of the songs are quite good, "Aimo O.C" is epic quality, but the rest of the BGM tracks are just, meh, generic BGM stuff that could've been grabbed from almost any movie or TV series. They fit the scenes they accompany, but are not memorable. Compare that to Kajiura, whose work on .hack//SIGN, Noir and Madlax is simply stunning. Watching the series, the music was great, but that greatness remains when listening to individual tracks and songs afterwards. They're not only good music, they are also memorable and evoke the feeling of the animes' scenes again. In short, I wish Kanno would be more consistently great instead of only hitting one homerun once every few years, and I wish Kajiura would compose much much more music. |

I'm not Kanno bashing, but I've never been able to identify her works, like I didn't even know Macross Frontier OST was done by Kanno until i browsed through the thread, nor did I find it outstanding apart from the different Aimo variations. Sheryl Nome's songs seriously mutilated the English language. And nothing from Cowboy Bebop made me go wow.
Like I've just finished Noir 3 days ago, and the only reason I watched noir and bought Madlax(not yet watched) was because of the composer, which I have never done for any anime. Kajiura has more identity and a definitive style i guess(or you could call it repetitive). I first noticed her from her work "Mezame" from Mai-HiME, it just made me go wow and google up the entire Mai-HiME OST, something I have never done for any of the 70 or so anime series I've watched.(maybe other than a few OPS and EDS of random series) |

Oh, you'll love the Madlax soundtrack then. IMHO it's even slightly better than Noir's.

If you like Kajiura's style, you'll be pleased to know that she sounds similarly throughout her works. On the point of view of the fan, Kajiura would be more likely to keep her fans happy this way. But if it's not your kind of music, then she's also not the artist for you.
On the other hand, Kanno is more industry-friendly. She works with what the director has in mind, she does whatever they ask for, which makes her a director's favorite. But for the fan, this doesn't work well since it almost ensures that she will do a completely different thing for different-styled animations, be it her forte or not. I've stood by Kanno because the trade-offs she takes to make her music are trade-offs that I actually like. In the case of scenic musical scoring, I like flexibility more than musical consistency. It all boils down to what your personal preference is. |

Yes this I agree on, she doesn't deviate much from a fairly simple formula of sounds and styles, but it is apparent she has a wide variety of influences ranging from Jazz, contemporary, classical, techno and others. It just so happens I am extremely enamored by Kajiura's particular sound and I can count on her for always putting out tunes I love. This is why I favor her far above Kanno, even though there are works (Escaflowne) of her's I truly adore. Those that say that Kajiura is on a "tier below" I still disagree with. My honest impression from what I've heard from both is that they are both extremely talented composers and with time, overall appreciation for Kajiura will surpass anything Kanno has ever achieved (if not already). |

After reading through most of the replies the general grievance with Kajiura is her supposed lack of "variety" and Kanno's supposed immense superiority in "versatility" frankly I find that utter B.S.
I've listened to Kanno's tracks, yes she has a fine variety style does many different things. But I've listend to dozens of other anime OSTs watching Animes and I have to say, Kanno isn't the only one with immense versatility. Name come to mind: Taku Iwasaki, Hikaru Nanase, Ko Otani (all immensely wonderful composers) but compared to Kanno, they're pretty much in the dust. Why? Because Kanno is more popular, why? She's written for the more popular animes. Otani, Nanase, Iwasaki, all have written for a wide vareity of animes but again are left in the dust in the fandom world. So now your asking why is Kajiura so popular than if she's written for the "Sucky animes"? It is because of her familiar style which has intoxicated so many fans. Frankly I've found Yoko more formulaic than Yuki. Variety =/= equal because well she always follows the same orchestration styles. Granted she does a variety but she still does it all the same ways. Yuki may have a similar sound each OST but she still is bold. You listen not all of her tracks really do sound alike. A Song of Storm and Fire, sounds like Salva nos? No it doesn't. It's used in the same vein as Salva Nos but that is a Directorial thing by Koichi Mashimo. They have very different melodies with different vocalists and different beats and tempos and just about everything. Frankly I find Yuki much more interesting than Kanno. Kanno is a tumble weed in the wind, yeah she's different, but there's nothing that set's her apart from any of the other composers in anime. She's popular because she's written for animes that have more audiences. The only score I've really liked is Macross Frontier but Yuki I've liked many OST's she's done, from .hack// to Tsubasa. |

I'm going to have to go with Yuki Kajiura on this one. Kanno is awesome and very versatile in her style. To this day, I still get chills whenever I listen to the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, especially "The Real Folk Blues." I love what she did for GitS and Escaflowne too. But Kajiura's music somehow gets me more. Whenever I listen to the ending theme for Loveless "Michiyuki," I just feel all the emotion of the series. And I listen to the Noir soundtrack at least once a day. I like how her songs have a great beat while retaining that folksy feel.

In reading the replies in this thread, admittedly, I found myself fascinated with Yuki Kajiura simply because I can now attach a series title with the singer/composer. There are several scores from Madlax I truly enjoy, and to find she's also responsible for music in Mai-HiME and Elemental Gelade, well, this kind of pushes Kanno down a notch given I only know her from Cowboy Bebop, which is legendary. In looking at Kanno's series involvement, I haven't heard any of the scores from those shows other than CB. On the flip side, I also don't think it's really fair to try and choose between these two. In some regard, they merely composed the music, not actually sing the lyrics. This one entity alone can make or break a theme song. Great score but horrible singer and, well, you get the idea. There are many songs/themes I enjoy which also help enhance the series. Take Clannad, for example. The opening of this series is just gorgeous. The ending to Fate Stay/Night is also gorgeous. Who did them? Couldn't tell you unless I look them up. *looked up: eufonius did the opening (comp/sing) for Clannad and Jyukai (sing no comp info) for Fate Stay/Night* If the popularity of these singers/composers is limited to one or two series, I don't see their names being added to a "vs" thread like this. But I've a feeling we'll hear more from them, since the songs seem to be very popular. Isn't this how artists become "superstars"? I can see the thread's title being updated to include a few more composers soon, making it even more difficult to choose. |

Let me just say that when I saw Cowboy Bebop I fell in love with Yoko Kanno, until I saw this:
Yoko Kanno plagiarizes I haven't heard Kajiura's work, but as long as she didn't steal I'm sure she's the better one.[/url] |
