I recently got a subscription to Netflix. As a former fan of the series Star Blazers (the US version of Space Battleship Yamato). I decided to check out the 5 Yamato movies. Having seen 4 of them now, I was wondering who here has ever seen these, and/or seen the series. Either the US version (Star Blazers) or the Japanese.

Please put down your thoughts on the show/movies/both.

Like I said I was a fan of the Star Blazers show, since it probably was one of the first anime shows I ever saw. It had everything you could want in a space show. Cool heroes, cool villains, awesome battles, and one of the coolest weapons ever in the Wave Motion Gun. The one problem with the show, was that when I bought it on VHS, they only had 2 episodes on each tape. 52 episodes (for the first season only) divided by 2=really boring really quick. I still have never seen the 3rd season, and don't really recall too much about the 2nd season.

I have yet to bother trying to pick up the series again on DVD.

The movies on the other hand are about 90 minutes long, and are very fast paced and exciting. When (or if) they ever do a Hollywood movie based on this show, I would probably see it.

I own the Voyager boxset of the Space Battleship Yamato. I bought it at Otakon a few years ago after remembering that the old show Starblazers was really called Space Battleship Yamato, and wanting to check out some classic Leiji Matsumoto. Since, I've seen the first two television series, as well. It's a real classic.

It's too bad there's no proper release of the television series in Region 1. I wouldn't mind seeing it remastered, with a new dub, as well.

Voyager also put all 3 seasons of Star Blazers on DVD. BTW they are having a sale currently on the Star Blazers site...all 3 series (thats 156 episodes) for $240. The Yamato set is $70 for all 5 movies.

I realize that this show is pretty old (way back in the '70s) but I thought that maybe there might be some older anime fans, who remembered this show...

I've been a Yamato fan far longer than I've been an anime fan. Still, I've only seen two of the movies, Farewell Space Battleship Yamato and Final Yamato.

Just to correct a small mistake, each season of Star Blazers/Yamato was 26 episodes long, not 52 episodes.

Interesting enough, the second season of Yamato was just an extended version of Farewell Space Battleship Yamato movie with some plot changes to make it lend a little less tragically.

I believe Matsumoto's actual quote on the matter is, "Young people should not die."

Of course, given the number of deaths racked up regardless of his new credo, it's sort of like Tomino's new credo of "Anime should make people happy." In other words, meaningless.

I think if the franchise had ended with Farewell Space Battleship Yamato, that would have been okay. Not that I don't enjoy the later adventures (aside from that third series, yipes), but most of that material just isn't as good.

OK Thanks for that info, maybe it just seemed really long...

So in other words, those 3 box sets are now 78 Episodes (on 6 discs for each set) for $250. Probably not going to be getting those anytime soon, unless they are cheaper elsewhere.

I verge on wanting to watch Farewell Yamato. I've heard much about the heroism and tragedy of the work, and unlike the Ideon films it's actually available to buy.
That said, it's from a time somewhat before the one which nurtured my fandom. Whether it is wrenching to the degree that I can overlook its age is something I cannot be certain of.

IMO the show still holds up pretty well. Just watched Final Yamato, and it was very good. The only thing is that I think they finally decided to throw the plot out the window. The ending was very sad though.

Obviously since there are some movies after the Farewell Yamato, you can probably guess that maybe they re-did some of the plot in the follow-up TV season (which was the Comet Empire Season).

After a while I might re-watch the series itself. Of course I will just borrow it from Netflix if I do.
