I was one of the people surprised by how good this series turned out to be. I picked up it because of the promise of real-world space travel, although I expected it to ultimately be a fluff-filled excuse for lots of fan service, a notion I'm happy to be wrong about.

The only thing is that I really wish the creators had stuck to the style and tone of the early concept video.

I enjoyed Rocket Girls right up to the last episode where there is a huge cop out. spoiler[When Akane, the navigator loses consciousness, Yukari has to pilot her way down using plain dumb luck, not using the training she had. There was nothing heroic about how they survived.]

I would have ended the series with spoiler[Akane regaining consciousness (why do you think she was doing all that physical training, to become fit enough to go on a mission?), just enough to read out the data that Yukari needs to pilot the capsule to safety.]

I haven't quite finished this yet, but so far I agree with the review, and what has been posted before me. Not nearly as bad as I would have expected, although there are a couple of points that are just ludicrous, like spoiler[dropping the space capsule in the swimming pool at the girls' school? What?]

But overall, not bad, and much better than I expected.

I loved Planetes, is this a more light-hearted version of that show?

Not really. This is more like a lighthearted version of the The Right Stuff.

I liked the show a lot, once I got past the CGI animation of the early scenes.

If you want the show to make sense on points like those, you just have to accept that the viewpoint of the Solomon Islanders (as portrayed) is the correct one, and that the spirits are really in charge. And they have a sense of humor.

You've gotta love a series that makes jokes around RPN, and whilst being wildly improbably never quite ventures into the outright impossible.

I caught this via Netflix, and was pleasantly surprised. I had very low expectations and stood ready to drop the second and third discs out of the queue. I was very entertained all the way through.

Unlike other sub only releases, this one sort of seems like it could have commercially benefitted from a dub. I have no problem watching subs, but I tend to lean towards dubs if they are available.
The inclusion or exclusion of a dub does not tip my buying decsion one way or the other, I let the story decide that.

I will probably bepicking this up on the next Bandai sale.

Nice! Cheap and affordable is a new concept for Bandai. Though I somewhat wish they had released this with an English dub. I caught this series a while back with some fansubs. Its fun and enjoyable. Though they really could use an OVA or a Movie to clear up the ending, heck even a short would work. I sure hope they translated the newsaper. This is easily worth its money imo and I plan on picking it up. Support the anime series you like.(cause if Bandai went into trouble we would be with out Geass, and a slew of other good shows)

That ending was so improbable that when I first saw it fansubbed I wasn't even sure if they actually survived or not--when I re-watched it on DVD the ending seemed clearer, but I think it was because I was more prepared for it.

That kind of lowered my expectations for making sense, but a couple of spots were even below those expectations. But I kind of thought they were going to make more out of the native tribe angle- there were some missed opportunities there, I think. Not perfect, but fun in its way.

Hmm, I might even buy this.

Also, no Eng dub = awesome! A step in the right direction. Less wasted space on the DVDs, lowers the cost, and keeps American wannabe voice actors/actresses from embarrasing themselves.
