With the news that Gotham Knight will be up for an Annie award I am curious what other american comics would be great in an anime format. I would like to hear what western comic would great in anime and why. For I firmly believe that Kick-Ass by Mark Miller would be absolutely awesome, it has excellent humor, a great story (so far), and some good amount of gratuitous violence (for all you Higurashi Fans. So, let me know what you western comic would translate into a great anime and why.

I think the Aliens and Alien vs. Predator stuff would make for a good show. They have a well-established mythos, there'd be lots and lots of yummy gore, and dialogue wouldn't matter that much for obvious reasons. I think an animated version would be way better than those awful movies they churned out.

Well even before Batman, Wichblade got an anime. I'd personally like to see an anime based off The Darkness which was in the same 'verse as the Witchblade incarnations.

I don't really keep up with comics like I used to, but I think Spider-Girl might work as an anime. That is if its even still being made.

I'd still LOVE to see a Green Lantern anime, preferably with Kyle or some new character. GL is an artist's medium.

If Y The Last Man were made into an anime it would definitely become a fanservice harem series lol.

Totally. As much as I loved Kyle (he was the first GL I knew!)...Hal Jordan has definitely grown on me.

With any superhero, I think an anime would do a Japanese version of the story (as in making the characters Japanese), like they did with Witchblade, and like I think they're doing with Iron Man.

To me, the obvious choice that comes to mind is The Sandman. I think the style and content would suit anime wonderfully, and there's the added bonus that Neil Gaiman would presumably be unusually receptive (unless anyone knows of him saying otherwise) being that he seems to be quite anime-friendly. Indeed, given the right team and perhaps even some level of involvement on Gaiman's part, I think it could potentially be a classic. It's beautifully written and drawn, and is dripping with potential to be stunningly animated.

Since I was a kid, I always wanted a Spiderman anime. I think anime action style would be perfect for Spidey.

It already worked in Japan, don't forget Spiderman's Japanese live action series in the 70s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcxioU7AMM4

Would a Spider-Man anime still have the ultra-cheesy tokusatsu/sentai elements the live action Japanese one did? Not to mention the inexplicable GIANT TRANSFORMING ROBOT

Because after I read about that show at first, I went "LOL WUT THAT CAN'T BE RIGHT"

Then it was like, "Oh...damn."

I don't know if anyone's ever read the War Within Transformers comics, but damn if that wouldn't make for a cool series.

Y: The Last Man. I've been dreaming of this for years. It has all the aspects of a great anime: post-apocaliptic world, action in spades, a cute animal, and a normal guy surrounded completely by women! As long as it stays faithful to the plot of the comic and doesn't degrade into a harem fantasy, like Bahamut623 mentioned, it could, it would be awesome. It even has a half-Japanese (and half-Chinese) main character(Dr. Mann), as well as scenes that take place in Japan, with ninjas, the Yakuza, etc. I can see it becoming a 52 episode series, easy.
Of course you can tell I'm a fan just by looking at my screenname...Wink

The only American comic books I could ever get into were The Punisher and various Archie comics. While I would really love an anime adaptation of the former, I'm afraid the latter would just simply turn out to be a generic harem love comedy (though I'd still watch it). I don't think anime has enough truly great anti-heroes so I think Frank Castle would make a fantastic addition to the universe next to the likes of characters such as Light Yagami.

300 would transfer well to a feature length anime; I'm thinking of something like Afro Samurai or Ninja Scroll type of animation. Of course the only way to watch something like that is with an English dub because I don't think Japanese voice actors can portray the "manliness" in their voices.

Batman would also be an option; it will need to be dark and gritty much like Hellsing or something along those lines. I think a 13-episode OVA would serve Batman well. The villains will need to take on a dark menacing appearance and considering the excellent job they did with The Dark Knight I think it would translate very well into anime.

I definitely concur with the above. It's my first choice too.

In addition, I would like to suggest some of Frank Miller's work, like Ronin and Elektra Assassin - the style and aesthetic is influenced by Japanese manga.

And one obvious-only-if-you-know-the-comic title, Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo Very Happy It would be an interesting case of coming full circle for Stan Sakai - an American Japanese who was born in Japan and letters and draws comics but getting his main work, Usagi Yojimbo, which is partially based on Miyamoto Musashi, being made into anime.
