Does whoever posts first actually create the topic, or are the topics auto-generated when the articles are put up? The question is mostly for my own curiosity more than any really useful reason.

I was under the impression that it was kind of a hybrid of those two. If you click the "discuss this topic in our forums" link for an article before anyone else, the post screen will automatically fill in the relevant subject line.
