First, Michael Jackson just happens to be a shrewd businessman. He legally bought the rights to those Beatles works. You don't see MJ posting pics of teenage Sailor Moon characters on his website. And, to be honest about it, MJ doesn't produce or distribute the Beatles albums, he merely sits back and collects the roalties, licensing fees from the music studio that releases those albums.
Stu Levy is just an out and out Sailor Moon Porno Pervert and he's directly involved with producing and distributing manga material. Secondly, ADV Films? Yeah, they're still publishing new anime and getting licenses. Apparently you haven't heard about Switchblade:

So what, we should have some sort of grass-roots effort to have DJ Milky be forcefully removed? And what exactly is the value of TOKYOPOP stock right now? |

It's a wonder you watch any anime at all. "Sailor Moon Porno Pervert," huh? So what you're telling me is,
If this is the case -- which it has to be, given how many writers and artists of your favorite manga series are also big fans of hentai or even participate in hentai circles of their own -- then your entire manga-buying philosophy is built upon a flimsy premise. What about something like Pastel? How about you quit buying manga from Del Rey because they've published softcore pornography? Are you really so recalcitrant that you'll sit there and tell me that Pastel doesn't cross your line but if it had shown the nip or the downstairs genitalia then it would have? Oh puh-lease, give me a break! The girl's naked, she's drawn in a heavily sexualized fashion (big squishy breasts, smooth fair skin, barely concealed crotch), the boy is clearly aroused by her, the reader is clearly invited to be aroused by her, and she's 15 years old. At least if you had said "I like Del Rey's endnotes" I could have said "There's a legitimate reason to slam Tokyopop." But the private-turned-public (and pfft, a webforum is hardly "public") practices of one member of the company? I don't consider that a legitimate reason at all. I consider it an excuse. |

/me raises hand Friend of mine did translation work for them in the MixxZine days, but never got paid. Gave her the "we're a small struggling company" line. She never did manga translation again, but does continue to translate anime. |

Actually, now that I think of it, the whole "Sailor Moon Hentai" thingy might have been justified somewhat- back in the day, Sailor Moon fans who weren't into hentai were completely insufferable. I'm serious, alt.fan.sailor-moon was a seething pool of vitriol, bile, and hate. Flamewars were a local pastime, and dub-bashing was practically a religion. Trolls commonly found them a very easy mark- anything associated with the dub was a big red button that sent everyone into rampage mode. It was a difficult place to hang out, unless your idea of a good time was tossing around enough Nerd Rage to level cities.
By sharp contrast, across the street in alt.hentai.sailor-moon, everything was mellow. Nobody was up for a fight, nobody had any serious trouble with anyone else- everyone was just there to relax, chill out, and have a good time. It was a rather bizarre situation- the people who watched the show to oogle high-school girls in short skirts were more charismatic as a group than the people who considered it serious art. Guess that's the internet for you... |

Eh? They had an office in the Phillipines while they were still tiny? Something doesn't wash here... |

No they don't. They make the occassional cut. This is not John Bowlder's Bible. We've been over this. |

Read the scanlations of Naruto, and then read the Viz translations. Tell me what you think then? They blatantly edit the art. |

She lives in California. We did have internet access in the Philippines as early as 1994; little more widespread by 1997. Hell, I got paid for writing a few reviews for Animerica back in the nineties. Pretty much the only stuff I'll buy from TP are OEL and light novels. Everything else I'd rather get in Japanese so I can brush up on Nihongo profciency. |

Pics? Because you obviously have pics of both, if you can make that assertation...
Dude, you actually trust someone you've only met on the internet? For all you know, she was lying through her teeth to get everyone to think she was the "aw3sum bl0ss0m 0taku-chan"! Hell, for all you know "she" was actually a "he" that was trying to run the company out of business for not printing the hot and heavy XXX scenes in Sailor Moon. You know, the ones we all knew about from our hardcore Otaku friends who had the Japanese originals? The ones that we actually didn't know personally, but had this friend who knew this guy who knew them? That guy who also showed us the imported Dragonball manga and pointed out which Kanji meant "fudge" and "bitch"? [EDIT: Like Ralphie, I didn't say "fudge". And WTF, this board censors "'C.U.Z."?] |

Given what TP tried to pull with their "hey kids, get published!" contract, you're willing to give them the benefit of the doubt? Yeah, I must be on crack for trusting someone I only know online than a publisher that acts like a con artist. Pretty much every freelancer I know of that does OEL doesn't trust TP; much of the comics press, too, for that matter. I'd really be on crack if I paid attention to your "reasoning". If you need convincing, which I doubt you're open to, check the translation credit for Magic Knight Rayearth in the very first few issues of MixxZine, then look up the name right here on ANN's Encyclopedia. I'm waiting. |

No, I am not willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. That's not it at all. Thought experiment: You're walking down the street, and you come to a fork in the road. Two guys whom you've heard of, Alan and Bob, happen to be nearby. Alan you know to be a shifty sumbitch who's run scams on people, embezzles money, and generally has zero regard for anyone's well-being but his own. He tells you to go left- there's a pack of robbers down the right path who are waiting to beat the hell out of you and take your stuff. Bob is an arrogant, obnoxious loudmouth who has become famous for his vendetta against Alan and has tried at every turn to discredit him, disgrace him, and work up angry mobs against him. Bob's methods in the past have included rumor mongering, half-truths, flinging unprovoked insults, and deconstructing everything Alan says in search of something that he can spin into a vicious slander. His favorite tactic is the slippery slope, where he takes something Alan is known to have done and links it, via a series of precarious logical leaps and tenuous connections, to something designed to stir the public ire. It's obvious to everyone that the resulting argument has no sense of scale or proportion, but everyone either doesn't care or doesn't see him fit to dignify with a response. Bob tells you to go right, that Alan is obviously up to his old tricks. So, why do you trust? The answer is clear: nobody! They are both established liars! Both have a proven reputation for spreading deceptions and misleading the public for their own self-centered ends. Bob, who you should by now recognize as the fandom, thinks himself so noble and righteous, but his relentless attitude and clear willingness to use lies and exaggerations in his cause gives him as little credibility as the known criminal! It could even be argued that when Bob goes on a tear and starts his ranting and raving, he starts to have less credibility then the guy he hates so much. You can't trust either of them. You either find some evidence you can observe with your own eyes as to which path is safe, or you turn around and go home, reasoning that if you run into two such liars on the same corner, you obviously do not want to be in this part of town to begin with! You get me? The fact that one guy is a jerk doesn't mean the guy that hates him is any better.
Don't type at me in that tone of voice, girl, I was patronizing morons on the internet back when people thought Pokemon was the name of a Jamaican pornstar. Anyway I had heard of that incident- apparently Mixxine used a fan-translation that had previously been circulated on the net for free, with the author's permission. I heard a different version of the story, though- from what I remember, the lady in question offered it too them free of charge to get a line on her resume that she might use, and also bring some kind of legitimacy and recognition to the fan-translation community. Given that she has apparently has made a career out of this, while MKR never rose above B-list status and TokyoPop had to make their fortunes with another title, I'd say she got the good end of the deal. Of course, this matter could be easily settled if you had the NAME of your friend, then we could just go looking and see if she's ever had anything to say on the subject. Anything that's written down, like, for the record. I would look it up as your said, but as it happens I don't collect old issues of girls' magazines... |
