not sure if this is in the rite place, but does region 0 always mean that it is bootleg? because I have one dvd from hong kong, yes I now know that one is bootleg, but I have some other dvds, mostly from CPM that are region 0. Are those bootleg too?
sorry, ignore this... I feel like a moron... I did put this in the wrong place. |

from what 'i understand, R0 is not the be all definition of bootleg, but it's highly likely if you have a R0 disc it is bootleg. The R0 should make a flag go off to tell you to do a little research and find pictures of the packaging for comparison as well as comparison of releasing companies.

Some of CPM's releases are R0, I always assumed that it was so that they could sell it overseas without having to reprint it and therefore save money. But yeah, most R0 dvds are bootlegs. Although some companies like Tai-Seng do import R0 dvds on their own.

A friend of mine brought the official release of Oshi's Avalon and played it on my region 1 player. I think that there are a few other official Japanese releases that are region 0. I think the biggest red flag for bootlegs is if there are more than 5 episodes per DVD. Many bootlegs use very high compression to stuff as many episodes into a couple discs.

Actually, a more accurate episode per disc count would be more like 8-9 or more per disc since many companies are putting 6 or 7 eps per disc like in the Funimation release of Fruits Basket. Also if you get an entire series like Trigun or Cowboy Bebop on like 2-3 discs it's a boot, and any other thing that makes it look too good to be true.

region 0 is by no means a bootleg, a lot of the copyright stuff are put onto R0 format just because they cant be bothered to have another version of the same stuff, especially if its japanese, or any other niche work of art because the money spend on designing another version and another advertising campaign maight be quite high and unnecessory.
but R0 are obviously more likely to be bootleg, but it depends on where you bought it. |

The only Avalon that's legit and R0 is the Panorama issue from Hong Kong. Any other version is a boot. The Japanese disc is Region 2 |

I have heard that even though Japanese DVDs say R2, they may be regionless, and MAY play on a region 1 player. But of course, the fun part is finding which ones will!
I hope this isn't too off-topic or sound harsh, but is there ANY anime company that legally releases anime with Chinese subs (excluding Disney/Miyazaki)? That was always the hand in hand catch with R0 = bootleg (to me anyway). |

Not to say otherwise, but... If it says "R2", it needs to BE R2, if it's a legitimate disc. If it says "R2" and is R0, then there's no easy way to distinguish it between a legitimate disc and a bootleg that just photocopied the box art.. And given the proximity of HK and Taiwan, Japanese DVD companies are painfully aware of the bootleg situation. I doubt you'd find many discs that are legitimate Japanese R0 DVDs.. and I doubt you'd find ANY discs that are legitimate Japanese R2 DVDs that are actually R0. |

Yes there is. License stickers missing, printing quality, and whether or not the wrapping has a pulltab like on a pack of cigarettes are all good indicators, while 1 and 3 are not 100% definate indications, the print quality definately IS. Also the price. You should not be paying under $25 for ANY anime DVD, and you shouldn't be paying under $35 for 90% of them. Most anime DVDs are in the $40-60 range from Japan.
Yes there are, they're few, but do exist. The first issue of Wings of Honneamise was R0 for example. More and more Japanese music DVDs are R0 as well. |

Sword, I think you may have misread what Cookie was trying to get at. Was that Wings of Honneamise DVD labed as an R2 originally, or was stated by the company that it was an R0 to begin with?
I thnk Cookie was trying to say that he's not aware of any DVD's that are labeled as being R2 that are actually R0. |

The first run was R0 and labeled as such. Subsequent runs were R2 and likewise marked
Virtually every J-Music DVD I've bought in the last year has been R0 and labeled as such |

Ah, the Jpop, thats what it was. I found the article at J-fan.com:
"Jpop fans: Most of our DVDs are labeled "region 2", but a lot of them are actually region 0, so they will play on any DVD player, regardless of what region it is set to. So in this way, it could be said that the "region 2" label on the back of the DVD is actually a "bluff". However, many of them actually are region 2, and will not play in anything but a region 2 player, and you never know which discs these actually are until after you've bought them. There are even inconsistencies, depending on what company the DVD is from. (For example, Toshiba-EMI released Utada Hikaru's "SINGLE CLIP COLLECTION VOL.1", and it only plays in region 2. However, the same company also released Shena Ringo's "seiteki Healing sono 1", which seems to play on any player.) So even though some of our discs will work on any player, we need to have a player capable of playing region 2 discs handy, in case it is needed. There is only one example I can think of in which a Jpop disc was labeled "ALL regions" and therefore is meant to be played on any player, and that is "UTADA HIKARU UNPLUGGED"." Sorry for the confusion! |

Ahh, found someone with Chinese as first language like me. Aren't you, Dilandau? Check out Proware Multimedia for Ai Yori Aoshi, Full Metal Panic, Onegai Teacher, Chobits, SaiKano, Scrapped Princess, Mahoromatic, and Hoshi no Koe, or E-muse for Last Exile, Saint Seiya, and One Piece, along with many other links provided here. Those are all legal releases, and I assume you can read traditional Chinese with ease. The only problems are that Australia is R4 and Taiwan is R3, and you may have to pay oversea shipping fee. The easiest way is to find a region-free DVD player (don't ask me how or where to get one.) |
