This is just quite annoying.
I'm sure everyone here is against proper child porn, where real kids are hurt and damaged. To try this kind of law seems impossible to enforce, if it does go through. I think there is a deeper agenda though, which is to make japan the same as everywhere else on the planet, where puritanical tentacles worm their way into making the world a better place. Just look how that's worked of for all the big nations. Seems to be getting like Minority Report everyday, where a thought crime is enough to get you in the slammer. Somehow, I still don't see this law going through. Its too open to attack and is so vague, with no real solid evidence that getting rid of such content will actually solve anything. Sure, I don't personally agree with the likes of ero, shota, loli and to a lesser extent yaoi manga/anime, but I understand and accept they exist and some people like that stuff. On the flip side of this, the chap who's being held over, what's now turned out is his yaoi collection (a different subject I know), this whole attack seems stupid. Sex etc in comics I think are a good healthy thing, because if they can be address in film or book, comics are no different. This is part of the reason why comic in general are never taken seriously like those media. I say UNICEF, get a life. There are children in real trouble in the world, concentrate on them, and not the imagined kind that live in japanese entertainment media. Unless you can prove a solid negative problem, waving the 'for the children' banner I don't think will ever be enough. This has been tried with games before to no avail. On a final note, japan are going into a recession again, thanks to the global economic situation. With japanese games, anime and manga being some of their best selling stuff, I honestly don't see them giving any of it up, on the unproven hearsay of even UNICEF. Good luck with that UNICEF, but I thinnk its about a likely to happen, as all libraries removing and burning Lolita because of its content. |

I may not exactly agree with straight up loli porn, but it's not exactly like real children are being hurt. I suppose there is the chance that some may be 'influenced' to test out what they read in a manga, but my personal belief is (to put it in terms of violent video games) violent people will play violent games. That being said, maybe some will look to manga, a legal means to their lust, rather than not so legal ones. Banning it would be a slap to the face. If this idea would include banning something like Gaiman mentioned, than truly, I wholeheartedly agree with him.

I agree with Onizuka666. They should concentrate on helping real children not getting upset about imaginary ones.
Though I do wonder how they would go about stopping people from creating and purchasing such things... |

Well, no one calls your church problematic, in spite of the fact that it's been hiding its real child abuse for the last century. |

Yes, let us all protect those lines on a paper. Those precious drawn children. Won't somebody please think of the imaginary children?!
Next, we can tackle the issue of genocide of those little plastic packing bubbles. Thousands of those are popped every year. I say we're ignoring them because there isn't any oil in Bubbleland. |

I don't really agree with this. On the contrary, people who play violent video games are probably less likely to be violent since it's primarily a sedentary activity. Active contact-sports players are far more likely to be violent than those who play violent video games. The only thing violent video game players have in common is a desensitization to violence. But this hardly means they are more violent on average than those who don't play games, just that they aren't as likely to freak out if they see blood/etc. It's not really a bad thing IMO. |

Related but more general: Does anyone know which bits of UK law cover animated pornography (and which bits of the law Quayle would have been referring to)? Last I knew our laws were vague on the matter to say the least. I've been looking into the doujin market in the UK, and want to find out just what you can and can't legally do. |

I get what they're saying, but apparently they ignore the studies that make it quite clear that the existence of manga and anime depicting children in a sexual way decreases the amount of actual child rape.
Plus, reading loli and shota does not make you want to go out and sleep with children. Most people can make the distinction between lines on paper and flesh and blood. |

OMG! WES GOTS TEH SAF TEH CHILDRENS!!!11!!!11 I'd support something like this if they had a series of definitive, comprehensive studies that said that these types of anime and manga lead to the actual predation of children (and those studies would have to be in multiple cultures, not just one or two); I'm not gonna hold my breath though. I'm still occasionally dismayed at how many governments rely on psychology to make decisions like this. I've taken enough psychology courses to have realized that it's the 'softest' science around. It's anything but objective (in fact, it's the only science I can think of that's actually so subjective), and yet laws and policy are decided based on it. I'm really hoping Japan sticks to it's guns and rejects this latest demand by UNICEF. |

THE Neil GAIMAN?! By jove...
Until there is actually a case that involves a real child and a loli comic, I don't see this issue being completely resolved. Maybe the courts will see the real situation here and pass off the repeated charges for illustrated "child porn". As for these critiques of Japan's stance on CP... as much as I am biased against these little brats I'm glad there are people looking out for them, but this is going about in the wrong direction. They should advert their attention to the (very) real young models that are actually exploited in these magazines and DVDs distributed throughout Japan. A Japanese news program on KSCI (Ch. 18 in SoCal) even criticized it's own media that these idols are too young and compared to other nations, even reach taboo levels. I wish I taped it to show ANN... But, no, out of all the angles to attack this issue in Japan they're using all their energy on drawings. Like that's going to really prevent anything. Makes me sick. |

Remember folks this would apply to not only works with little brats but with every character depicted that is under 18. Such as pretty much all erotic dojinshi from Evangelion, Ranma, Lucky Star, Inu Yasha, Naruto or many other popular titles.
Also much of the commercial erotic anime and manga works that are currently available in the US including many Boys Love (aka yaoi) titles. |

Tell me the above image doesn't at least border on child porn. To me it's always been baffling that the idol industry (exploitation at the very least) has been allowed to carry on the way it has. You have girls who look like they are about 12, in bikinis, in (sometimes very) suggestive poses, and you think the middle-aged men who buy the photo books in question do so because they are fans of the music? The girls obviously don't know what's going on, like most teenagers just happy for some attention. That the parents allow it though, is quite shocking. And that society at large thinks little of it just shows how far back Japan is. |

Right, so the reason you would read such things if you're not sick bastard would be? It's sort of like watching a rape scene in a film. A normal person would feel disgust and would rather not watch. |

Well, Japanese artists could draw only adult looking characters (over 18 yo) in sexual situations and that would solve the problem.
