Justin Lin and Nick Cage were originally attached to the remake, so I'm kind of wary of the new team. But maybe Stevie and Will can pull a Sweeney Todd with this one...

As I recall, only about half of it was actually a revenge flick- it gets kinda weird, not to mention a bit uncomfortable and... er, controversial.
Spectacular movie, in my opinion, but I wouldn't have expected it to get blockbuster treatment. |

There's no way anybody is going to make a better Oldboy film. Definitely not Spielberg. He'll ruin it.
I wish Hollywood would stop remaking films that have been made and released in Asia. Period. Most of the remakes suck and just don't work with an American audience in mind. Scorsese's remake of Infernal Affairs (The Departed) has been the only one to turn out decently even though I didn't like some of the character changes and I still think Tony Leung and Andy Lau can act circles around Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon. |

I don't know if I've forgiven Will Smith for Hancock yet, and given the current economical situation I reckon Asia should embargo film remakes until Obama further restores American dignity.

My Sentiments exactly there is no reason to remake this film its almost perfect the way it is and its only 5 yrs old. The only people who would want this are those who’re too dumb to read subtitles. Also Will Smith is a terrible choice to play Oh dae su. |

I just cant see an American movie studio keeping the "controversial" plot line along with the hotel scene. After you remove that it loses a lot of its power as a film.

Oh dear God no! Spielberg and Smith, it's my worst nightmares come true. An absolute travesty.

Somehow I can't see Will Smith or any American actor doing the controversial scenes.

Personally, I thought that the actor playing Oh Daesu strongly resembled Gary Oldman. I figured every single person who saw the movie would have thought so, too. I think Gary Oldman would be a great choice for Oh Daesu (with perhaps Tim Robbins as Lee Woojin), but he tends to be good across the board. The problem with Big Willy is that no matter what, you can't accept that he's anyone other than Will Smith. In fact, I don't know if I've liked a single Will Smith movie since Bad Boys II, and nobody I know likes that movie. Oh, how I miss the heyday of "hard-R" action movies. |

Forget doing a remake of the film.
Do a film adaptation of the book, that could blow Chan-wook Park's film out of the water. The manga is nothing like the film, only a few elements in the manga were brought over into the film. |

Steven Spielberg + Will Smith = Oldboy? You've gotta be kidding me. As much as I like them both, the possibility of them remaking this film scares me.
Speaking of Scorsese, to me he's probably the only American director I'd be confident with in terms of helming a remake of Oldboy, although I do agree with you. Hollywood needs to stop with remakes of Asian films. Heck, they need to stop with the remakes altogether.
Not necessarily. The R1 DVD does have an English dubbed track. |

Once again, movies cannot be ruined. If you don't want to see it just don't watch it. It's not like the manga and the original version is going to burn before your eyes. *sigh.* Not wanting to read subtitles doesn't make you stupid. Remakes are sometimes made to cater to an older generation, or because of cultural differences. I don't see why people make such a big deal about that, when other countries dub overseas content. |

It's how you see it in perspective of the movie theater/TV/computer screen. Yet another revenge movie that we may be seeing. Although I have to agree with another poster, I can't see Will Smith doing anything that could be seen as grotesque or controversial. But, they may tone down the movie, which may have more of an impact on the movie.

I could agree with that...You're used to seeing an actor in a specific role so much that it is impossible seeing him in a different light. xD Like if he were to play the villain. But that doesn't mean he has the potential to do so. It may fit, it may not... I don't think that he has been chosen to play the lead role yet. Hoping isn't the same as it being official. |
