nice, we get to seem some of the character designs. The don't look too bad.

My only question: doesn't Aya have black hair in the manga? I never imagined it light brown/dark blonde.

That guy in purple with the blonde hair kinda reminds me of Trunks, Yuugi, and Wolverine (must be the hair.)

Any word on who's doing the art and animation, or is it the same crew doing the manga? If so, what's their name?

From what I've heard, the story sounds like a cross between the movie "Volcano High" and the video game "Rival Schools." I'm looking a bit forward to it now... Anime smallmouth

Niiiiiiiiiiiice!! Looks like quality animation and from tha few screen shots plenty of samurai swords and tha clevage is still there most likely it'll just be manly ecchi not full-frontal nudity. Can't wait.

yeah i just start reading this yesterday. if you can get past the ecchiness, it's got some awesome fight scenes. this would make a great anime.

geez, I've been out of the loop for a long time.

I think its great to finally see this get animated, I found the manga about a year ago and thought it was awesome.

wow april. time sneaks up on ya when you get busy.

I'm kind of worried about Raiki the sword Aya uses, it looks to be a standard size. In the manga it was a very looong katana.
If they do the fights justice in this, its a definite buy. Wink

the art direction is pretty good, nagi (the blonde guy) seems to be changed alittle differently than I expected. oh well, as long as bob is still there. hehe Cool

Anyone else see the first episode of this? I caught it tonight and my thoughts are as follows:

1. They REALLY shouldn't have messed with the character designs. The characters looked great in the manga, and it's a shame that they went with some of these designs; Aya and Nagi seem to have suffered the most. I can't stand Aya's mouth. Nagi's hair pisses me off. Everyone else seems okay, though.

2. They seem to have gotten the manga's balanced and tolerable mix of fighting/comedy/drama/ecchi. The show is NOT about breasts, but simply has breasts in it from time to time. This was the biggest obstacle this show had to overcome in order to avoid being Ikki Tousen 2; as it stands, this show has miles more class than Ikki Tousen. Nobody will easily confuse the two shows.

3. The animation is very nice and will do some of the fights later in the manga justice. They're doing a good job toning down some of the ecchi parts of the manga to make it all a little more acceptable. So far nothing's been drastically changed for the worse, which is good.

Essentially, it really is no substitute for the manga, but it's really not a bad show at all. If this is the best we can get, then so be it. Consider me Not Displeased; unless, of course, Shin Natsume never shows up, in which case I may be displeased.

Well, about the character designs... I think the manga itself isn't very consistent with that, and the mangaka mentions it later on... That the characters in Chapter 1 look nothing like those from the newer chapters, and I think the anime does a good job of balance the "rough" look from the earlier chapters to the "cute" look from the later chapters... Anyway, from Ep 1 itself, I think it does a fairly good job of duplicating the manga. Some of the "feelings" from the manga are missing (for example I think the art in the manga was much more "artistic" than those from the anime). But like you said, it's no substitute.

Usually this is the case with all manga, and is really obvious in long running series. A good example of this is CLAMP's X series. And artist's style usually evolves. Either way, unless an anime has an insanely high budget, an anime will never really be able to duplicate the detail of the character designs an a manga considered to have some of the best art around.

Wow. How'd you guys get to see it?

The animation was done by Madhouse, right? I guess that's a good sign at least. Haven't read the manga, but I think I'll it to add to the list. Can't wait to see it though from what you all are saying...

Yes indeed, if Shin doesn't show up, everything is lost.

The real question is Zac, how far are they going to go in the story for this anime? How will they end it?

It may end up like Getbackers I"m going to guess.

On a character design note: The hair colors of some of the characters weren't what I was expecting. Nagi's hair besides the annoying part is a pee yellow. I was expecting it to be aloot lighter. And aya, well I was expecting a darker brunette.
(sigh) guess I can't have my cake and eat it too.

I've just gotten into the manga, so I'm really hoping the anime is good. The character designs aren't too bad, my biggest complaint being that Aya's voice is quite different forom how I imagined. Current cast lists don't include anyone from the past arc to my knowledge. They may stick to flashbacks or perhaps do another season with it. Has anybody learned how long this is going to run? Other than that, the only other thing that bothered me was the extremely high amount of non-japanese names in the credits.

Having read the first ten volumes of the manga, and finally seeing it on screen, I definetly gotta agree with Zac on this one. The story does appear to follow the manga at least. Although some of the nudity and ecchiness is gone (and I must wonder about some later volumes where the ecchiness is very strong), it doesn't have any real impact on the story being told. On the otherhand, I'm really disappointed in the changes to the character designs. Even when compared to the initial artwork from the first volume, which did have a slightly rougher feel to it, it comes off as a bad imitation. Ah well, so be it.
