Round 1 is now closed.

Final results are now up here. One match went down to the wire, but the margins of victory for the rest only spread more with the additional five votes since the last summary. The lower end of the bracket featured several huge blow-outs, which should make things interesting next round.

Anyway, the first group for Round 2 should be up by midnight forum time.

And the upset of Integra by Kugen allows Key to break away with first place in the minigame as marie-antoinette falls out of the top spot for the first time in the tournament. Remaining tied with marie is dtm, and mow pulls up several spots to join them.

Results already sent to ccdx to be updated with the score chart. Excel chart will probably be up 14 hours from now.

Group A-17
L, Death Note
vs.
Jummy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan

This is pretty much a vote against L...so my vote goes to Conan

Group A-18
Kazundo Gouda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig
vs.
Choji Suitengu, Speed Grapher

Sticking with whom I voted for in the first round, Gouda.

Group A-19
Makubex, Getbackers
vs.
Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka

Makubex because I like him better. And, again, first round vote.

Group A-20
Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise
vs.
Near, Death Note

Motoko because of what was said about Near in the last round.

Group A-21
Char Aznable/Casval Rem Daikun, UC-related Gundam titles
vs.
Ayumu Narumi, Spiral

This is a toss up but I'm going to have to go with Char because of what was said about him in the first round.

Group A-22
Ryoko Uchida, Noein
vs.
Yurika Misumaru, Martian Successor Nadesico

Sometimes you just gotta go with your heart instead of your head, Yurika

Group A-23
Shuurei Kou/Hong, The Story of Saiunkoku
vs.
Autor, Princess Tutu

Autor is smart but just not smart enough for the second round, Shuurei

Group A-24
Miria, Claymore
vs.
Shikamaru Nara, Naruto

Miria gets the vote but I'm willing to be convinced to change my mind on this one.

Despite Hellsing being far better-known, I don't consider this an upset, since Integra doesn't actually do that much to solidify her position. (And her opponent, despite being from a little-known recent series, is a stiff competitor.)

But anyway, onto new-round business!

Group A-17
L, Death Note
vs.
Jummy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan

Ah, a battle of ace detectives! This face-off is a round or two premature, but such is the luck of the draw.

Although I fully expect L to win this one, if for no other reason than Death Note is more popular and highly-respected in the fan community, this one shouldn't be a blow-out. Conan's strengths are pretty much the same as L's, and they both do pretty much the same kind of thing and have the same kind of reputations within their settings. And it can be argued that, unlike L, Conan spoiler[doesn't get outsmarted and killed because of it]. Even so, I still give L a slight edge for now because he has a much tougher adversary to duel against and plays against him quite hard.

Group A-18
Kazundo Gouda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig
vs.
Choji Suitengu, Speed Grapher

Two master schemers up against each other in this one. Which one ultimately produces the more clever plan? Again, this one could go either way, but I'll give a slight edge to Gouda because the technical manipulations he goes through to pursue his goals are a little more impressive and he is backed by much better writing.

Group A-19
Makubex, Getbackers
vs.
Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka

Had to resort to the Guide on this one. Urumi sounds much more impressive.

Group A-20
Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise
vs.
Near, Death Note

Wow, another strong match-up in only Round 2! Not sure which way this one will go. As much as I really, really hate Near. though, he earns my vote because he gets outmaneuvered less frequently, proportionately-speaking, than The Major does.

Group A-21
Char Aznable/Casval Rem Daikun, UC-related Gundam titles
vs.
Ayumu Narumi, Spiral

Gotta go with Char on this one, even though Ayumu sounds worthy.

Group A-22
Ryoko Uchida, Noein
vs.
Yurika Misumaru, Martian Successor Nadesico

I adore Yurika, but she is simply too dippy too much of the time for her tactical brilliance to win out against a foe far superior to the one she faced in Round 1. Ryoko Uchida, a quantum physics expert able to keep pace even with those who have a couple of decades more advanced knowledge on the subject than she does, should unquestionably win this match-up, and by an overwhelming margin; don't let MSN familiarity or sympathy sway you on this one, people!

Group A-23
Shuurei Kou/Hong, The Story of Saiunkoku
vs.
Autor, Princess Tutu

I'm not crazy about Autor being in this tournament at all (much less in the second round), and Shuurei is worthy enough to vote over him anyway.

Group A-24
Miria, Claymore
vs.
Shikamaru Nara, Naruto

Ugh, have to vote against one of my favorites here! Miria is probably worthy of being in the third round, but Shikamaru is the brains of Naruto and he unfailingly demonstrates that in every appearance from the latter rounds of the Chunin Exams on. Speaking as someone who knows both series very well, he is, without a doubt, the right choice.

Only three people guessed that Tenko would win. None of the other characters from shows as unknown as Wagaya won except Keaton, and he got 5 nominations whereas Kugen got 2. Yes, Kugen was the better choice (and being the one who originally nominated her, I'm glad she won), but in terms of the minigame, I saw it as an upset.

Of course, Integra also only had 2 nominations despite being from such a massively popular series, so you're point stands as well

New round means less to vote on and type. Here we go:

Match A-17: L (Death Note)
L constantly keeps his brain active in the most unusual of ways from what I've seen of him and his brains are shown plenty of times throughout the series. The Kira case is on a bigger scale than anything Conan is involved in. So, L gets my vote.

Match A-18: Kazundo Gohta (Ghost in the Shell: 2nd GIG)
Political manipulation and terrorist expertise for the win.

Match A-19: Urumi Kanzaki (GTO)
Makubex's entry is rather weak seeing as I've seen more versatility in intelligence from Urumi. So, she gets my vote.

Match A-20: Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell)
Simply put, Near is completely outclassed by the talents of the Major.

Match A-21: Char Aznable (Gundam)
Char's a master strategist and cunning military leader. Ayumu's just a detective type of fellow. Char outclasses Ayumu in this match.

Match A-22: Ryoko Uchida (Noein)
Yurika's too weak of an entry to advance further in this tourney. So, I vote Ryoko for this round.

Match A-23: Shuurei Kou (Story of Saiunkoku)
Going along with reputation and guide considering I've seen neither series and my mini-game choices got canned in the last round.

Match A-24: Shikamaru (Naruto)
Shikamaru's been in plenty of situations where he outwits opponents stronger than him and has demonstrated his intelligence on more than enough occasions for him to earn my vote.

Group A-17
L, Death Note
vs.
Jummy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan

Voting for: L (this weeks avatar choice as well)

Reason: I prefer the more serious detective.

Group A-18
Kazundo Gouda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig
vs.
Choji Suitengu, Speed Grapher

Voting for: Gouda

Reason: I've seen both series, and while I respect Suitengu's manipulation skills, I give the nod to Gouda because he faced off against more intelligent opponents in his respective series.

Group A-19
Makubex, Getbackers
vs.
Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka

Voting for: Urumi Kanzaki

Reason: There are several candidates that I still kind of feel are boarderline for the tournament, I can't say that Makubex is one of them as I haven't seen the series, but I have seen GTO, and I know that Urumi deserves her spot.

Group A-20
Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise
vs.
Near, Death Note

Voting for: Motoko Kusanagi

Reason: I'm not going to go into my issues with Near again, but from this point on I can't vote for him. The major is smart enough to take him down in my opinion.

Group A-21
Char Aznable/Casval Rem Daikun, UC-related Gundam titles
vs.
Ayumu Narumi, Spiral

Voting for: Char Aznable

Reason: Char seems to be almost a legend amongst classic anime characters, I haven't heard enough about his competition to vote against him. This vote is able to be changed though.

Group A-22
Ryoko Uchida, Noein
vs.
Yurika Misumaru, Martian Successor Nadesico

Voting for: Ryoko Uchida

Reason: I've seen both series, Yurika stood out more, as I don't remember much about Ryoko, but still this is probably the right choice.

Group A-23
Shuurei Kou/Hong, The Story of Saiunkoku
vs.
Autor, Princess Tutu

Voting for: Shuurei Kou

Reason: Comments

Group A-24
Miria, Claymore
vs.
Shikamaru Nara, Naruto

Voting for: Shikamaru Nara

Reason: This makes me very sad. Miria is one of my favorite characters, but she just doesn't get enough screentime to justify me voting for her. Shikamaru shows his tactical skills and critical thinking ability almost every time he is shown on the screen.

Group A-17
L, Death Note
vs.
Jummy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan

L gets the vote here from me, I think he's a smart choice, and while I can see the strengths in both of these candidates, I think L deserves it more than Conan.

Group A-18
Kazundo Gouda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig
vs.
Choji Suitengu, Speed Grapher

This is actually a difficult match-up, however I think Suitengou put much more into his plans and for much longer and really is more intelligent than Gouda.

Group A-19
Makubex, Getbackers
vs.
Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka

Makubex deserves the win here, although I can certainly see this one going either way as well. Both are very intelligent, however I think Makubex had to think about more in scope than Kanazaki did, and make plans accordingly.

Group A-20
Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise
vs.
Near, Death Note

Near because I can't see him not advancing. Sure I liked the Major a lot, but I just don't see her as more intelligent or clever.

Group A-21
Char Aznable/Casval Rem Daikun, UC-related Gundam titles
vs.
Ayumu Narumi, Spiral

Wow, I would have thought more people would have seen Spiral, as I see a lot have said they weren't familiar with this show. Some of the very smartest and clever characters ever are in this show, leading to wonderful plot twists that make it an exciting show...right up until to end. Anyway, I say that to vote for Ayumu Narumi, he was a really clever character, truly thinking outside the box to make moves against other really clever people and having to use all his skills to prevail. I don't really see Char as being competition against him in this respect.

Group A-22
Ryoko Uchida, Noein
vs.
Yurika Misumaru, Martian Successor Nadesico

I am familiar with both of these shows, and I have to give the edge to Ryoko in this round. I really think she demonstrated much more intelligence than Yurika ever did.

Group A-23
Shuurei Kou/Hong, The Story of Saiunkoku
vs.
Autor, Princess Tutu

Honestly, I guess I will have to go with other people's words and against my bracket in this and vote for Shuurei. I am not familiar with this show at all, and am with Princess Tutu, but from other comments, I will be swayed that this is the better choice.

Group A-24
Miria, Claymore
vs.
Shikamaru Nara, Naruto

Hands down Shikamaru wins this round. He just really impresses me with his skill level and planning out tactics in advance and has proven time and again this is normal for him, not a fluke.

Reason: due to some spoilerific stuff concerning Death Note: spoiler[ L was never smart enough to act on his totally correct instincts and died for it. Conan didn't do that. ], rather a vote against L

Possibility of Change: low

Group A-20
Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs.
Near, Death Note
Voting For: Near
Reason: ugh, for (Death Note spoilers): spoiler[doing what L failed to do and surviving]. Can't say I'm a Near fan however.
Possibility of Change: medium

Group A-21
Char Aznable, Mobile Suit Gundam UC-related Gundam titles vs.
Ayumu Narumi, Spiral
Voting For: Ayumu Narumi
Reason: going with what i know
Possibility of Change: medium

Voting For: Ryoko Uchida
Reason: for thinking way ahead of her time and understanding all the technobabble Toby threw at her

Autor, Princess Tutu
Voting For: Autor
Reason: for thinking outside the "box"

[quote="Dorcas_Aurelia"]Ggultra, if it helps you feel better, Group D was the lowest scoring of the first round.

Template:

Group A-17
L, Death Note vs.
Jimmy Kudo/Conan Edogawa, Case Closed/Detective Conan
Voting For: L
Reason: Every single case Conan handles, including the ones he struggles with, are cases L has solved in the past with ease. He struggles with the Kira case only because he's up against a formidable adversary who is about equally as smart as he is. Conan solves cases in which all the masterminds are only on par with your average Joe.
Possibility of Change: Zero.

Group A-18
Kazundo Gohda, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig vs.
Choji Suitengu, Speed Grapher
Voting For: Gohda.
Reason: Both have plans to do something big socially, but Gohda's seems a lot more complex than Suitengu's.
Possibility of Change: Possible if I get a case against Gohda.

Group A-19
MakubeX, GetBackers vs.
Urumi Kanzaki, Great Teacher Onizuka
Voting For: Urumi
Reason: Makubex doesn't sound like much. Urumi's able to hack computers at a high proficiency too, and so much more.
Possibility of Change: Low. Need a very strong case for Makubex.

Group A-20
Motoko Kusanagi, Ghost in the Shell franchise vs.
Near, Death Note
Voting For: Near.
Reason: I don't like Near that much, but Kusanagi doesn't seem too impressive, while Near is almost L's intelligence, if not beyond that.
Possibility of Change: Very low.

Group A-21
Char Aznable, Mobile Suit Gundam UC-related Gundam titles vs.
Ayumu Narumi, Spiral
Voting For: Ayumu
Reason: Guide. I'm almost impartial here.
Possibility of Change: High.

Group A-22
Ryoko Uchida, Noein vs.
Yurika Misumaru, Martian Succesor Nadesico
Voting For: Ryoko
Reason: Guide.
Possibility of Change: High

Group A-23
Shuurei Kou-Hong, Story of Saiunkoku vs.
Autor, Princess Tutu
Voting For: Shuurei
Reason: Guide.
Possibility of Change: High

Group A-24
Miria, Claymore vs.
Shikamaru, Naruto
Voting For: Miria
Reason: Shikamaru may have better battle strategy, but lacks the overall insight Miria has.
Possibility of Change: Low

I have seen this argument used before but thus far, it simply doesn't work for me. As I recall, L spoiler[explicitly addressed the reasons why he couldn't directly act upon his instincts and simply have Light killed]. While his instincts may have been enough for him, he knew that they wouldn't be enough for everyone else and he understood that there wouldn't be any way for him to spoiler[use his power and influence to have Light killed without himself becoming essentially no different than Kira]. That is a choice, not a defect in intellect. Light understood this about L and I think it can be argued that he counted upon it. In fact, I believe that it's that dichotomy between each characters' vision of justice that stands as a defining theme for the series.

I have to argue against people voting for Near. He might not be as outmanuevered as much as the Major, but spoiler[much of what was handed to him regarding the Kira case was obtained from L making him look more like a relacement than a successor to L.] Not to mention the Major has more areas of expertise that demonstrate her smarts and cunning than L shows in Death Note. Besides investigative talents, Motoko has also shown off her skills in hacking, leadership as Section 9's leader on missions, and devising tactics when engaging in battles and investigations. So from how I'm seeing this battle, L shouldn't be able to survive this round with such a large difference in skills and expertise between him and the Major.
