I had always wondered about how many copies needed to sell in Japan to be considered a success. At about 6000 yen per volume, minus about a 1/3rd retail margin, they brought in about 44 million yen (USD~$440,000.00) on that. Even after production costs, they made a nice penny on that, and there are more volumes to come.
I wonder how many volumes it takes for a US title to be considered a success? Anyone know? |

10,000 copies holy sh!!!!+ THAT IS SOOOOOOO little dang i never knew that was considered alot for gonzo in japan but i guess thats good being that anime is expensive over there. its just when i think of other industries, they usualy have higher numbers of sales than 10,000. So it sounds little, but i guess thats good compared to other animes. (im not realy sure).

Thanks for doing the math. I'm kind of stunned by how little profit they made actually. Half a million is not much when you consider how complex and time consuming a task it is to produce animation. I'm amazed the anime industry can go on with margins like this. They must really truly love what they're doing, because they're not making very much money. And I don't mean that in a mocking way at all. I really admire the passion Japanese animators have for their craft. |

I agree. I'm as shocked as everyone else. I never liked that the US companies hid their numbers. But with this number being so low for a "popular" title in Japan, and the fact that the US anime fans don't purchase as much, I'm starting to see why. |

According to Sugishima's page, he directed the OAV of SW, not the TV series (that was Kazuhiro Takamura).
I think the show itself deserves to succeed on its sheer ridiculousness alone. |

An anime title, especially "late night animu" is considered a hit when they sell well over 10,000 units.
Competition was stiff since it was also dealing with "Code Geass," "Lucky Star," and "Macross F." And pretty soon; Clannad. The question people should ask: When will Funimation license and dub it?

I totally want it to get an R1 release too! Of course, there are the legalsubs by BOST, so there's already an option to watch it outside of Japan, but fans need DVD's too. Rather than Funimation, I think Media Blasters or Nozomi Entertainment would be better. I'd love a sub-only release. Edit: I just realized that the article mentions Youtube and CrunchyRoll, but not BOST TV. Jesus, does ANN have some sort of paid deal with CR to never mention it's competitors in relevant news articles? |

I've noticed this as well however when you think about it how many people really use Bost TV? Just the people who hate Crunchyroll correct? On topic I think Media Blasters has more of a chance to pick this up than funimation, although I could be wrong. |

Coolio, now when will this be licensed for the States? Given my waiting for other series to be licensed, hope it's soon. Gotta give a dog a bone occasionally, right? That being said, I'm really hoping for a sub-only boxset (like Maria-Sama ga Miteru). Not only will it be quicker (presumably), it'll be cheaper.

Good for Gonzo. After years of losing money on mediocre shows that were clearly conceived with an eye on the dwindling American market (no wonder they go after fansubbers so much), they finally started to cater to the Japanese audience. And what could be more appealing to male Japanese otakus than moe girls with heavy weapons and no pants?
I don't care for most Gonzo shows (Gankutsuou, Kaleido Star, Welcome to the NHK and Last Exile are some of the few exceptions), but I'd like them to stay in business at least long enough to produce the sequel to the surprisingly entertaining Tower of Druaga. |

I can't remember where I heard this information, but supposedly selling 10,000 DVDs of an anime is considered a success. Maybe someone can verify this?

IIRC, a decade ago, 40 000 video sales was considered a hit in Japan. Seems now it's all the way down to 10 000.... I guess that's a result of further niche-ization of shows (more and more targeted to specific niche audiences, instead of a wider variety of target audiences). Strike Panties is actually a good illustration of that.
OTOH, I think 10 000 anime sales used to be the hit line in America. Kiki's Delivery Service hit a million a decade ago. That seems so far away now. To think, a Pixar film just takes a few days to reach a million sales.

I don't see why anyone should be so surprised that they sell so little. When you charge about $60 for two episodes. Frankly, I don't see how they even sell 10,000 units like this.
