did you ever start a series or story that you thought would be excellent, but stopped because it sucked?
well, here is the place to share your story! this will be like group therapy to discuss about the series that you rather NOT have bothered with in the first place! QUESTIONS: 1. Which series/story did you drop off? 2. Why? What was it that disappointed you? I shall now open the floor for discussion. No worries. I WILL answer my questions. I just gotta take care of something first ^^;; Enjoy. |

We have an older thread that talks about this, though not quite in the same format: animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=35439
But since that thread is rather lengthy, and out of date, I'll try to come up with the ones I've quit. The following are those that I've read the first volume for and not been captured enough to continue (that I can remember): Candidate for Goddess, Tarot Cafe, Canterella, INVU, Vision of Escaflowne, Ranma 1/2, Love Roma, and Alichino. I just didn't love any of these series and couldn't see the point of buying any more volumes of them. A special mention goes out to Hana Yori Dango, because I've seen and quite enjoyed the live action, but decided not to invest in the manga simply because it is too long and because I already know the story. Plus, not a huge fan of the art, though that by itself isn't enough to detract me. Here are ones I've gotten further in: Angel Sanctuary: I thought the ideas behind this series were really interesting, but the execution just left me confused. There were just too many characters and I couldn't keep track of them or what was going on. W Juliet: I really like the basic concept for this, and the initial volumes as well. But...it just went on too long. I think this is one that would have been much better if it had only been a couple of volumes, because the gender switch did get a bit old after awhile. Genshiken: I've heard so much about this series that I had to check it out. And I didn't necessarily dislike it. But I didn't really like it either. I watched the anime and after that, I really had had enough. The Queen's Knight: I liked this series, but not quite enough to justify buying any more volumes of it. But it was close (if it was a shorter series, I probably would have gone for it). |

Tenjho Tenge: I probably should have stopped after the rape ended up being completely pointless except for the shock value of it, but I'd heard the series was good, so I decided to give it a little more time. Then the never-ending flashback arrived. It's not really the length of the flashback that frustrated me, but that it seems like all of the characters had their personalities reversed at some point between the flashback and the current events, and after however many chapters into the flashback I read (50 maybe? It seemed like that many, at least), it was barely closer to explaining anything that I thought it was supposed to be explaining.

Kannazuki no Miko. I decided to read it because I thought it was interesting, and it had nice art, but the manga is just so confusing and boring for me. I know it only has 2 volumes, but I just can't get myself to read the second one.

Hell Girl. I could not stand it's monotonous themes that were presented. Basically the same results for the three volumes that I read out of it, and I became quite bored with it.

Naruto, I lost interest at volume 14. The slow release date was a bit too much for me, I almost forgot what happened in the last volume each time. (It was my first manga so I started it a while back). Oh and the parts where spoiler[Gaara turns into a giant sand.. monster thing and Sasuke getting at least 5 times through the neck but living were way, way too much for me. I mean, if they can do that with Sasuke, who can tell what other crap they might pull?]
I also dropped Ouran High School Host Club. The anime is one of my favorites ever and I found out the manga is ongoing but I don't have the patience to read through the 26-episodes worth of the anime that the manga goes through before getting new content. Although a bit of some volumes (of what I've read so far) has manga-exclusive content, I'm just a little more interested in some other series. I might pick it up again later though. Also, I'm thinking of dropping Life (by Keiko Suenobu). It's really interesting and definitely keeps my attention but volume 2 was just so disturbing I felt sick to my stomach reading it. I mean, stuff like Elfen Lied is nothing compared to what happened in that, for me, anyway. I'm on 4 right now but for volumes 6+ it got so much worse they had to bump up the age rating from 16+ to 18+... For anyone who's read Life here, how much worse (as in, disturbing) do volumes 6+ get and is it worth reading farther? Thanks. |

For me, the manga I read than dropped or discontinued were:
Candidate for Goddess, I had seen the anime back in 7th grade and at the time liked it, (but then, there wasn't much anime on TV, maybe that's why I even watched it in the first place.) Then back in 2005, I got all 5 volumes. Just last year, I got rid of them. I don't know why it took so long to realize how dull that series was, and it made no sense. I should've spent my money on something else. Sailor Moon, not only was this hard to find after awhile, but again, reality hit. Sailor Moon was not that great, and the manga is even worse. The art was so atrocious, it was hard to make out the scenery. The plot sucked too. I'm glad I never completed it. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, this series is so long and gets ridiculous with all the stupid fighting. I had only bought vols. 1-4 of Dragon Ball, and borrowed a few volumes of DBZ. I never borrowed or bought more again. Vision of Escaflowne, this was not at all like the anime. The characters were so different, Hitomi was a whiny, clingy little brat, Van was some short weirdo, and Dilandau had tan skin and purple hair! He's supposed to be pale-skinned with white hair! Flame of Recca, only read the first volume, never bought anymore after that. This manga was so dull, and most the characters were unlikable. Shaman King, for some reason I bought 3 volumes. Read volume 1, could only get through the first chapter. This was dull, and completely unoriginal. The whole thing with ghosts fighting for you was an insult to supernatural anime. Gravitation, I had bought volumes 1-3, interested in the fact that it was a shonen ai (I admit it). Well, the manga hardly focuses on the relationship between the two male characters Yuki and Shuichi. Plus, there were hints of bisexuality and heterosexuality. I know those exist in real life, but when I read a shonen ai, I want homosexuality to be the point. Another thing that got me was that Yuki was actually straight, but agrees to be Shuichi's boyfriend, kisses him, and it's even mentioned that they crossed the borderline. Sorry, but how can a straight guy suddenly become gay? That really bothered me. If both guys were gay to begin with, and not some straight guy who decides to go out with another boy, this would have been a good series, in my opinion. Wow, I let out alot. Thanks to whoever posted this topic. |

Getbackers - I bought the first five volumes, and then stopped for a while to get into other series, and generally I lost interest in continuing. I enjoyed when I first got into manga (entry-level Shonen phase), but it just plain doesn't interest me anymore.
Rave Master - Another series I got into when I first started, possibly the third ever series. Same reason I discontinued as above. I've read the first volumes of many series that I'm not too impressed by, and they include; MPD Psycho (overeliance on shock and gore), DearS (ecchi, no real story to it...), Lament of the Lamb (didn't find it interesting at all, and I dislike Kei Toume's art). |

I think you kind of missed the point with Yuki. He's not straight, the fact that he becomes involved with Shuichi is evidence of that. I think the real point is that they are both attracted to each other and not necessarily attracted to other men. Shuichi doesn't really seem attracted to anyone other than Yuki, male or female. |

I know I've dropped a number of series. Maybe not so much that it sucked, but it just wasn't as good as others and I can only read so many. I'm already backlogged as it is.
Dragon Head comes to mind. I somewhat lost interest. Though I think that was also a case that I missed a volume at my local shop and never bothered going elsewhere for a copy. Golgo 13 was interesting, but I just couldn't keep up with so many books and that was lower on my interest list. That each was stand alone dind't help it, I guess. Same for Shin Chan. I stopped Eden, but that's mainly because, again, I missed a volume. Yet I still got new volumes as they came out and eventually got the missing one. Now I just need to reread them and catch up. |

I have some handful of series that I dropped.
Pita-Ten: I am not a fan of chibi/cute character design. The story was interesting the reason why I dropped it because I couldn't find any of the latter volumes. Since i don't really care though I just dropped it. La Corda D'Oro The art was nice but I got bored and it got dull for me starting on volume 2. It sucks though since on the first volume I thought that I would definitely enjoy this series. So I already bought volume 3 along with volume 2. And the fact that it was about music I couldn't get into it..... W-Juliet Again the art was into my liking. I bought it because of that. I thought the story seems pretty intruiging cause this is my first Gender-bender series. But when I start reading the first chapter I couldn't get into the story! It was full of endless conversation. Yurara Well I didn't dropped this but I was about to on volume 3! I got the first four volumes so I continued reading this series. For some reason Yurara's spark was gone on volume 3. When I read 2 I was really hooked but then it got a little repetitive and it was getting boring-er..... So I'm still gonna buy the Final volume for the sake of the completion! Thankgoodness it has only 5 volumes! Monkey High! The first volume I was really really hooked! Since the story was unusual. But when I read volume 2 it seems every chapter was a filler and it became a drag. It was a dreadful read.... Faeries Landing The art was really cool and I bought it to try some Korean manga (manwha). The first 5 pages was pretty good but then it became like a dictionary! It was full of conversations and panels full of explanations about things and stufffff..... It was like reading a book not a manga. I wasn't really liking the story as well. Kon Kon Kokon I'm planning to drop this series since Brocolli Books are not planning to release volume 2! It has been over a year now and still no volume 2! The art was not into my liking, but the manga itself was very HIGH QUALITY! The paper was thick and white. It has a nice cover and a 2 colored page. the story was nothing special but I like the characters though.... Too bad it was just really slow on publishing...... Fruits Basket Meh..... Tried to read volume one but couldn't find to like Tohru, the doormat protagonist. Also it was too long and I don't really find it funny. I saw the anime but it was a bad purchase as well.... Somehow those glowing and raving reviews was wrong for my taste... Anyways it was just a meh..... |

Bleach and Inyuasha. Way too childish for my tastes, and the whole grim reaper theme has been severly overkilled, at least in my opinion.

Hmm, a manga series that I have dropped..
There have been a lot that I've dropped. The most significant ones that come to mind are: Mahou Sensei Negima. Simply put it didn't have the same charm or lovable characters that were present in Ken Akamatsu's previous work Love Hina. I had high expectations for this series and I did manage to read up to volume 15 but as the manga dragged on and literally I felt like I was dragging my mind on to read the next page I found myself not being able to take in the whole scope of it because of the amount of text on each page. I just couldn't bare to read anymore. There really wasn't much for me to like in it so I dropped it in favour of checking out other series. XXXHolic. I honestly liked this series at first and it had a cast of quirky characters but the thing with this series was that it ended up feeling repetitive and really.. I saw no point in reading further because I could barely see the direction the series was going in. I believe I stopped around volumes 4-7. Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. It was really interesting at first, to combine all the Clamp titles in this series but... that quickly died off and well I just really lost interest in it. I stopped around volume 8 or 9. Haha if any of you didn't notice all of my choices were Del Rey licensed manga. |

funny I only read up to vol 10 of negima it really has too many characters to keep track of or care about and the one turnoff is that it is a struggle to read like you said, way too many speech bubbles on one page crammed with art and spell casting, it just gets erratic at times though I might finish the series one day since my library has all the volumes so far... also I stopped reading ranma a vol 10 and xxx holic around 4 just got too boring

There are a couple of mangas I drop.
The first one that comes to mind is Arm Kannon. I was my first M rated manga. All the gore and blood was a really big turn off for me. I only made to the second volume before I completely drop off. Another one was bleach. I don't really have a good reason for it. For just for me it drag on too much. Might get back to it, but not to sure. |
