I have a bad feeling about this.
In the Made episode they made the girl take down her wallscrolls.. Why? What's the point of that when the only thing that mattered was how people viewed her at school. She didn't have to do that.
They make it look like there's something wrong with liking anime and that they have to change in order to be accepted by society.

They're going to choose the "geekiest" people who are so far outside the "norm" & make all anime fans look like total freaks. And I can just picture the cosplayers they choose... man-faye, cat-girls in almost-costumes & all the people who wear lycra, spandex & sailor costumes that just shouldn't. Forget about all the insanely skilled costumers who put together all the gourgeous, well-made stuff that wins awards at cons and things like that international cosplay contest.
Then we'll all end up with reps like the stereotypical freaky trek fans (mind you, I do love ST, have gone to cons & had fun but my life doesn't revolve around it like those people) and any progress that has been made in making anime more accepted among the general populace & not just seen as "kids cartoons"or "porn" is gonna be shot to he**. I truly hope I'm wrong, but I'm not going to place any money on that bet.
And what about us fans who are out of our teens/twenties & raising families?? It's discrimination, I tell you, not all anime fans are under 30! Nyah!
BTW, Whatever happened to MTV having one channel & actually being Music Television??? I miss those days... |
I have a bad feeling that you may be right... |
I agree, this is going to be trouble. This will give all anime fans a bad name, even decent ones like myself. I wish MTV stilled played their music videos. I love songs from the 70s and 80s. Now they cater to what's considered in. They're not the rebel channel they used to be.

I'm shocked, honestly, by the mass embracing of this...
I don't see it as anything but MTV looking to take a shot at our culture and insult it.
A show focused on people with addictions? Anime isn't an addiction. Why haven't they done a WoW episode yet? That'd be a more worthy candidate...

Ya, her 'coach' told her her room looked like that of a 14 year old boy, and she had to put away all of her anime stuff (posters etc), and by the end, she got a Japanese styled roomed to make up for it I guess. That episode was ridiculous.
I won't judge early on True Life though - I like to be optimistic.

But this isn't Made. It's True Life- they don't make them do anything.
Now, yes, it's most likely that they're going to pick the worst of the worst, but is that really going to change people's opinions of anime fans? Firstly, there's not very many of us. And secondly, whatever people's opinions of them are, they probably aren't very good to begin with. I mean, how do you know that some random person is an anime fan? They probably wear cat ears in public, or walk around with their Naruto headband on their neck, or they watch hentai/yaoi/yuri in public. The general population still thinks that anime is for kids or just porn (considering they know what anime is in the first place), so there hasn't been any real "progress" to prove that anime is more than that, other than John Lasseter and his promotion of Miyazaki's films. *
And anyways, showing someone who's normal on a TV show is pretty boring- that's just how reality TV works.
* Indeed, when I had my cousin and my aunt come over to my house to celebrate my HS graduation, I showed him Death Note(which he liked) and my various manga and anime collection. And eventually he asked me if I watched those rape cartoons.

You guys talking about the fangirl episode of MADE made me curious, so I started watching it. I'm only seven minutes in and I already feel super sad. Mostly because Diana, the subject of the episode, could've made changes to herself without going on TV and exposing the innerworkings of our culture to everyone with a TV/internet. T.T I dread True Life. Can anybody say... boycotting the application?

It isn't for me. =/
Addiction implies they need it to either physically or mentally function properly or something similar. I could live without anime. I might be a little more bored in my life but seriously, I could find alternatives.

And just about anything can be turned into an addiction, even anime.
Anyways, it doesn't say anywhere in the article that MTV views anime as an addiction. They're just looking for fanboys/girls.

True, the casting thing doesn't seem too fair, but MTV airs Tokio hotels performances, so you can't hate them too much. =P

I'm generally willing to give anyone a chance to prove my bad opinion of them wrong. I try to cling to my last shred of faith that human beings can actually act decently toward each other on television. (I'm a masochist.)

Tell me about it. I won't be looking around for this since I don't have MTV and I have better things to do with my time, like actually watch anime or read manga. But, I still say good luck to all applicants, it should still be able to provide some interesting aspects of anime fandom.
