Well this sounds. . . interesting. Actually gives me a reason to tune into MTV when it comes out just to see how it's handled. It would be the first thing I'd purposefully watched on there since Wasted. (That was a good movie.)
How do they usually handle these subjects? Is this one of those series that only treats the PC issues with respect or do they actually try to remember that we're all human?

Yea,I'm pretty sure this is going to make me ashamed to call myself an "Anime fan".lol But,I love Anime,Manga and Japanese culture as a whole. Sooooo, the lifeless, over enthusiastic Star Wars level geeks who will appear on the show will have almost no relation,as fans,to me(except for loving anime).
Plus, these will have to be REAL fans. Ya know, the ones who buy and import actual product(DVD's,CD's,Manga, etc). They'll have to have accumulated at least a good bit of paraphernalia to show. Hundreds of Fansub files and some printed Scanlations won't cut it(but it might get them arrested, though).

I'd do it... but since I at least attempt to have a life outside of anime, I'm probably not what they're looking for.
Keep us posted on this, ANN! I wanna know when I can see it.

Depends on the subject. I've seen a couple about young adults dealing with some tough issues that were really well done, meant to be a window into their lives. But subjects like this are meant to be more of a "novelty weirdo" angle. They did "Gamers" once, and choose people like Fatality (that pro gamer) and Billy whats-his-face (beat PacMan). For laughs I was looking over their casting calls a few months back, and found one for people "living off the grid." Of course, the only contact they gave was an email, I wonder how many responses they got.

I'll be looking forward to this. True Life is one of the very few MTV shows that isn't total crap.
Oh, and I hope they cast a Narutard.

Yeah, but it's MTV. They're only going to choose pretty otaku like they only choose pretty people for Real World. (Which isn't very real) Still, I took a chance and entered. ANN, keep us updated on this please. I'm sure we would like to see the episode!

Well, gee, wouldn't covering anime fandom be a bit redundant then?
Meanwhile, a friend of mine almost got picked up for that Beauty and the Geek show. They were scouting outside one night at the MIT Anime Club which he often attends.
Though I wouldn't want to be a part of the freak show the network was putting on. This sounds that it -might- be about on par too.
"One of us! One of us!"
"Do you think he's cognizant of how baaaad he's got it?" "Let's hope not. Poor bastard."

Clearly, you've never seen True Life.
It's not as much that they'll pick the prettiest as much as they'll pick the worst of the worst. Like people who are obsessed to the point where it severely interferes with their professional or social lives. That or kids who live in some small town with no cons or local fandom community and have to face being labeled a freak by friends and family due to their interest.

This really makes me curious... Do you think they've put out the casting call with the intention of catching their "subjects" during con season next year? Or do they actually know when the hot otaku happenings occur?

It seems that it will be interesting, so I'll have to keep an eye out for it..
Is it me, or I'm one of the few people that remember when MTV used to broadcast music videos and just music videos...

Well, this sounds like trouble in the making, mind you I have never seen this show but it sounds like more bad "reality" tv. They're going to choose the "geekiest" people who are so far outside the "norm" & make all anime fans look like total freaks. And I can just picture the cosplayers they choose... man-faye, cat-girls in almost-costumes & all the people who wear lycra, spandex & sailor costumes that just shouldn't. Forget about all the insanely skilled costumers who put together all the gourgeous, well-made stuff that wins awards at cons and things like that international cosplay contest.
Then we'll all end up with reps like the stereotypical freaky trek fans (mind you, I do love ST, have gone to cons & had fun but my life doesn't revolve around it like those people) and any progress that has been made in making anime more accepted among the general populace & not just seen as "kids cartoons"or "porn" is gonna be shot to he**. I truly hope I'm wrong, but I'm not going to place any money on that bet.
And what about us fans who are out of our teens/twenties & raising families?? It's discrimination, I tell you, not all anime fans are under 30! Nyah!
BTW, Whatever happened to MTV having one channel & actually being Music Television??? I miss those days...

The music turned to crap. (Very much my opinion and yes I've tried several different kinds of music.)
Or it could be that the industry started asking too much and the people started watching too little.

First off MTV sucks, now with that I have seen one episode where a girl loved Anime and Manga (I can't remember what she was trying to do) maybe it was made I was watching but regardless the women made her cry by Liking Anime its complete crap, back in the 80's MTV was a rebel and embraced the counter culture now they are leaders in what teens should think and act plus dress, F*** MTV, chances are they are going to find some big sweaty guy who has no friends and no GF to remind the other socalites that Anime is for people who have no Lives and will grow up to be losers.
OK im done with my rant
