At least one thing is for sure; Naruto is going to continue to be popular for quite a number of years to come.
I would not be surprized if the manga version of Naruto even exceeds volume 50 or 60.

50 or 60 volumes isn't exactly a wild prediction, given it's currently on 44 and isn't immediately approaching an end.
Nonetheless, although I'm pretty much used to it by now, this is somewhat depressing. It's the same sort of feeling I get when I see that the most popular books in America are Harry Potter and The Bible. We should be seeing things like Osamu Tezuka manga and Monster on the best-seller list, and never, ever Naruto or anything related to it.
When it comes to things like American graphic novels, movies, and (aside from certain flaws, like the aforementioned) books, popularity tends to swing in the right directions. I suppose the problem is the general lack of exposure to manga. Whatever gets the most publicity or is shown on TV gets the most popularity, for now at least. And right now, Naruto is among the few anime shown at a reasonable time. It's what people can access, and sadly, that makes it dominant.

You seem to be ignoring something: Naruto is a standard shonen series, meaning it can attract a wide demographic: kids, teens, and adults, and both genders. Monster, on the other hand, would have a more limited demographic for obvious reasons. And in terms of shonen series nowadays, I think only FMA, One Piece, and Hunter x Hunter are better written than Naruto, so it's hardly that much of an issue for me.
I say, as long as people are enjoying reading, that's good enough for me. And honestly, why should all people have to read stuff like Monster? Not everyone wants to read the most "intelligent" stuff out there. Some are looking for fun, some are looking for escapism, etc. We might as well criticize people of the past for reading Dickens, Twain, Lovecraft, etc. instead of the more "intelligent" authors.
Besides, Fruits Basket sometimes makes the list, so it's not just limited to Naruto. Also, I just heard recently that Watchmen sales have soared (probably thanks to the trailer attached to TDK), and that graphic novel easily surpasses 99.99% of manga in terms of being an intelligent, well-written book with important themes (note: that being said, Alan Moore's ego needs to get taken down a bit).

The next Fruits Basket release will be next month, so hopefully we'll see that emerge onto the list. Right now these manga titles haven't really been making a hard hitting impact onto the list.
