So what exactly does this mean for Dentsu related anime titles that were formerly connected with Geneon?

In other words.. they want funding. The whole "prelicensing" thing doesn't seem to have been popular of late. |

Is that what this article was talking about? I thought it said that Dentsu America was going to make anime with North America and Europe. Meaning, anime wasn't going to be just Japanese. To be honest, I wouldn't want this to happen. The fact that anime was different/foreign, and of another country was what got me to like it so much.

You've got it. They want to directly tap into western culture (by working with American/European talent) for products aimed at overseas audiences. Anyway, this is one direction the industry has been looking toward, so the news shouldn't surprise anyone. Anime needs to be more mainstream to thrive, so the producers are responding.
Not much. Through this office, I guess they'll continue to shop select properties to existing distributors and/or broadcasters. |

Its about time. Hopefully this means high profile shows can get dubs made while in production and have simultaneous releases.
Western ideas filtered through anime would be pretty good. I've long since been tired of the 1001 identical teenagers in mechs shows or nerdy guy is chased by the hottest girls in school but rejects them out of love or possible homosexuality and the boy/girl is bullied but "saved" by a girl/boy who ends up the love of their life. At first it was really cool and different then american cartoons... now its just... X-Men, Justice League, Teen Titans... all of those are about superhereos yet they aren't 100% identical. Maybe the anime made by this new branch will some how be able to take a japanese story and ungenericify [made up word] them. |

According to the article, they want to use Western writing & concepts, then animate them. You wind up with anime made in Japan, but designed for Western audiences. Globalization at work? However, look at what Top Cow did with their Witchblade franchise. The comic book already established that many women have wielded the Witchblade. Rather than trying to animate the comic book, Top Cow partnered with Gonzo (anime) & Bandai (manga) & allowed Japanese wielders with original stories. Both did well, especially the anime. Rather than animating Western concepts, Dentsu should find Western franchises who are willing to have them interpreted as Eastern properties. |

Hmmmm.... so Dentsu decides to open another American Office after they shut down Geneon. Weird way to change your strategy and Handel all of the stuff you licensed.

What people may not know most of our beloved shows that we watched were all animated by the Japanese and the Koreans already, Batman the animated series,superman,pinky and the brain,tiny toons,Justice league,Gi joe 80's and Sigma,Transformers, Jem,He-man. Even the lovable The Simpsons all these shows were either fully done over there or it was farmed out. For years American Cartoons have been animated not by americans but by asian. So i don't see this any different. I am looking forward to see what comes out of type of thing

Dentsu is an advertising giant in Japan with billion$$ of capital. They aren't settling for just adapting anime for the West like Geneon did or work-for-hire like Korean studios to American producers.
They want to co-produce new shows, combining anime-ting skillz with Western sensibilities, to sell to the world. A giant like them doesn't need small money; they're aiming for the big money - the mainstream. |

That's not quite the same. They were animated by Japanese & Korean studios, but they used Western designs. Except for Transformers & possibly G.I. Joe/Sigma Six, none of the above have the anime style or design we usually associate with anime. The current Transformers: Animated is done by anime studios, but with U.S. character design, primarily by Derrick Wyatt of Teen Titans. Here's the ANN Encyclopedia page: anime#8932 Again, my point is Dentsu is looking for Western franchises & concepts to turn into anime. But can East understand West? I still applaud the Top Cow/Gonzo/Bandai method of having a Western concept that can be translated into Japanese culture, yet when brought back to the West, is still recognizable as part of the original franchise. |
