I think Tekkonkinkreet, The Ice Wanderer and Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms were all deserving of the recognition (though if it were up to me I'd probably have opted for Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms).
MW's great but maybe not quite great enough to compete with the titles above and I've not got around to reading Monster and New Engineering yet. |

Now that I think about it, I imagine Kishimoto is also a TK fan, since I see a lot of that art style in Naruto Shippuden.

MW is minor Tezuka, so I'm glad they didn't automatically give it to that like they usually do. So for me it was between Tekkon and Town of the Evening Calm.... The latter is the superior manga in terms of writing, craft and ambition, but TK is one of my all-time favorites so I'm pretty stoked.

Though there's a good reason for it, still seems to me that this new category "Best U.S. Edition of International Material" does to manga what "Best Animated Film" does to "Best Picture" in the Oscars. </shrug>

Awesome. Best manga legally available in English is finally getting some much deserved recognition. Hope that this encourages Viz to pick up Hanaotoko and Ping Pong and whore it with "From the Eisner-awarding artist of Tekkon Kinkreet..."
what MW is not significant to Tezuka's catalogue, period. It's not one of his definitive works, nor does it belong to a larger franchise. Nolan's Dark Knight is an entire different story. I usually am able to follow your arguments, but this one makes no sense. |

I dunno; this year, plenty of manga and manga creators were nominated in categories where they would have to go up against American books and authors. And in the past, the Eisners have not shirked away from picking a manga over an American comic, either. In a way, hell, launching the manga category mainly means that European comics won't get shut out any more! |

The Eisner Awards people may be worried that cumulative manga stuff would be winning disproportionately against domestic productions - and I'm a proponent of domestic productions too, as well as a consistent playing field. Could manga still win as much now that there's this new category? I guess time will tell. |

Manga isn't restricted to a single category in the Eisners (though it may be barred from some categories - I'm not sure). |

Congrats to Taiyo. TBH, I wouldn't have minded any of the nominees to win, but if TK winning it is enough to warrant more Taiyo Matsumoto from VIZ, then I'm all for it.

The point was whether manga would still win in those other categories in similar past frequency now that this new category "Best U.S. Edition of International Material" seemed made for it.... |
