Group D-25

Aoi Sakuraba and Kaoru Hanabishi from Ai Yori Aoshi

Reason: In spite of the fact that at the beginning, I wasn't planning to finish this series, I enjoyed it after a while (thanks again, murph76!) and they are a really nice couple who try to find a common road that might unite them and in the end not only do they succeed that, but they also reach finally an understanding of their maturity and how they should treat their relationship in the future as well. I also liked the fact that in spite of their innocence at the beginning, they discover in the end the means to fight for the future of their relationship.

Group D-26

Nana 'Hachiko' Komatsu and Nana Ozaki from Nana

Reason: In spite the fact that at some point in the voting process I voted for each of these pairs, I am going with the ones that impressed me through the strong bond that exists between the two of them and the natural friendship that exists between these two Nanas.

Group D-27

Kaoru Kamiya and Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin

Reason: I liked the evolution of this couple a lot. Before my post, there have been beautiful arguments in favour of these two so the only thing that I can add here is the fact that I loved the way these two characters succeed in completing each other: Kaoru gives to Kenshin a new purpose in life and a family, a home to come back to and she is about the only person that can 'kill' spoiler[Batousai] for ever. On the other hand Kenshin succeeds in making Kaoru grow by showing her a new side of life, that up to a certain point remained unknown to her.

Group D-28

Amano Ginji and Ban Mido from Getbackers

Reason: I have seen all these series and I can understand the strong arguments that have been brought up for each of these pairs. Still I am voting with the pair which seems the strongest to me. And everything that I wanted to say in their favour has been wonderfully said by psycho101, so thank you, sir! Very Happy

Group D-25

Aoi Sakuraba & Kaoru Hanabishi from Ai Yori Aoshi [Video Clip]
vs.
Roy Mustang & Maes Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist [Video Clip]

Aoi and Kaoru like most have said here, Roy and Maes don't get much focus as a duo since they aren't really the focus of FMA. Aoi and Kaoru are one of the quintisential anime couples, though I haven't seen Ai Yori Aoshi yet (except the clip)

Group D-26
Nana “Hachiko” Komatsu & Nana Ozaki from Nana [Video Clip]
vs.
*Shana & Yuji Sakai from Shakugan no Shana [Video Clip]
vs.
*San & Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke [Video Clip]

Shana and Yuji Sakai I haven't really seen much of any of these, except for a few eps of NANA. After watching the clips I just liked the feel of these two the best.

Group D-27

*Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon [Video Clip]
vs.
*Rihoko “Rico” & Masane Amaha from Witchblade [Video Clip]
vs.
Kaoru Kamiya & Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin [Video Clip]

Kaoru and Kenshin, this one is no contest in my opinion. Others have said it better, especially ManOf Rust. The only thing I will add as that the scene where Kenshin leaves for Kyoto with her standing there and the fireflies being the only light is one of the best and most touching I have seen in anime.

Group D-28

Ginji Amano & Ban Mido from GetBackers [Video Clip]
vs.
*Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima from His & Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) [Video Clip]
vs.
*Kyon & Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya [Video Clip]

Kyon and Haruhi, yeah they are a little odd but it works. I haven't quite finished this show but I like their chemistry.

Wasn't sure if I was going to vote in this round or not due to the beating Haruhi & Kyon are taking, but I'm not doing anything else at the moment so here goes.

Group D-25

Aoi Sakuraba & Kaoru Hanabishi from Ai Yori Aoshi
vs.
Roy Mustang & Maes Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist

Winner: Aoi Sakuraba & Kaoru Hanabishi

Aoi & Kaoru are very strong, and I would vote for them over a good number of couples in this tournament, but I feel stronger that at this point Roy & Maes should be out of the tournament. I agree that their relationship had enough substance to get them to this point, but they're also lacking what it takes to advance to the final few rounds.

Group D-26

Nana “Hachiko” Komatsu & Nana Ozaki from Nana
vs.
*Shana & Yuji Sakai from Shakugan no Shana
vs.
*San & Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke

Winner: Nana & Nana

Regarding duos I have a slight tendancy to favor a more realistic pairing, especially when there is also strong reasoning behind the choice. Their strong friendship gets the vote.

Group D-27

*Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon
vs.
*Rihoko “Rico” & Masane Amaha from Witchblade
vs.
Kaoru Kamiya & Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin

Winner: Kaoru & Kenshin

Of these I'm only familiar with the Sailor Moon pair, but the voters chosing Kaoru & Kenshin seem to have stronger feelings towards them. Overall though, I don't have strong feelings for anyone in this group.

Group D-28

Ginji Amano & Ban Mido from GetBackers
vs.
*Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima from His & Her Circumstances (Kare Kano)
vs.
*Kyon & Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Winner: Kyon & Haruhi

One more vote for them which will ultimately be lost in all the votes for their opponents. I was rather surprised at how poorly they're doing in this round, and I have my theories on how one might want to avoid voting for them so as not to look like an ignorant tMoHS fanboy who's voting for them only because t3h anime iz t3h roxxorz, but why they're not getting the votes I expected isn't that important. I genuinely appreciate them as a duo who work well as a comedic duo, a team, and as a subtle romantic duo. They argue and disagree quite often, but keep in mind this never breaks them apart. They're just two people who are unable to openly express the feelings they may or may not realize they have for each other in a straightforward way which is not a major flaw. When Haruhi needs something, Kyon is the first person she goes to because she trusts him and relies on him, only she does it under the guise of Kyon As Chore Boy to hide her feelings for him. So lets see some more votes for these two.

I don't think this is the case at all. Both Randall and myself have made passionate arguments on behalf of Masane and Rihoko, but Ruroni Kenshin just has too many fans and supporters around here. Although I'm not surprised things are turning out the way they are here, I am quite annoyed by it, as I have not found the Kaoru/Kenshin arguments to be any more compelling.

The bigger surprise to me is how easy a time Yukino/Arima are having in group D-28 given that only a last-minute vote change even allowed them to tie Kyon/Haruhi last round. Have that many people switched their votes since last round? Or did all of the Ginji/Ban votes come from the Kyon/Haruhi pool?

Anyway, the round's over in less than eight hours. When it officially ends, I'll have some breakdown stats on the Sweet 16 competitors.

Group D-25

Aoi Sakuraba & Kaoru Hanabishi from Ai Yori Aoshi [Video Clip]
vs.
Roy Mustang & Maes Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist [Video Clip]

Aoi Sakuraba & Kaoru Hanabishi

I have never felt that Roy and Mustang were the focus of the anime like the case is with this paring. I loved the early development between between the Ai Yori Aoshi more than any other series. It's shame it had to ruined later in the series with typical harem antics.

Group D-26
Nana “Hachiko” Komatsu & Nana Ozaki from Nana [Video Clip]
vs.
*Shana & Yuji Sakai from Shakugan no Shana [Video Clip]
vs.
*San & Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke [Video Clip]

Shana and Yuji Sakai

I am going purely by the clips. They seem to have a slight edge on the other two parings.

Group D-27

*Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon [Video Clip]
vs.
*Rihoko “Rico” & Masane Amaha from Witchblade [Video Clip]
vs.
Kaoru Kamiya & Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin [Video Clip]

Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask

Call it cheesy if you may, but I have always been a sucker for the love through time element of this duo. Although their relationship can be considered traditional, I believe that they have the strength needed to progress to the next round. It's too bad that this pairing and the Rurouni Kenhsin pair will not likely both make it to the next round. I always liked the tragic element of that pair and I will not be disappointed if they happen to win instead.

Group D-28

Ginji Amano & Ban Mido from GetBackers [Video Clip]
vs.
*Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima from His & Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) [Video Clip]
vs.
*Kyon & Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya [Video Clip]

Kyon and Haruhi

This pair is a perfect example of why a strong duo paring doesn't necessarily have to be a traditional romantic pair. This stems from the common misconception that romantic duos are inherently stronger than their non-romantic counterparts. Their power comes from their amazing chemistry. Kyon's level-headed cynicism is a perfect match for Hahuri's unrestrained euphoria and impulsiveness.

Detractors of this series cite the lack of progression between these characters keeps them from becoming a strong duo. I have to disagree. I believe that is fully possible for relatively static characters with a relationship that doesn't go very far by traditional romantic standards can still have a powerful relationship with one another that can drive the series. Also it can also be argued that Kyon and Haruhi are not completely static. Near the end of the series, Kyon seems to have finally influenced Haruhi to a degree -- spoiler[ she seems more grounded to reality near the end of the series. ]

Haruhi and Kyon's joke of a romantic relationship also develops the characters emotionally. However, this wavering and implied relationship would not be able to stand on its own. Their strength as a duo is a testament to their chemistry.

At least for me personally, the antics between Haruhi and Kyon fueled by their complementary personalities not only produced a majority of the humor in the series but drove the series single-handedly. Without the interactions between Haruhi and Kyon, I believe that the series would have only been mediocre at best.

Got to go for the more iconic pair.

Group D-26
San & Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke
I thought this these two were a good pairing.

Group D-27
Kaoru Kamiya & Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin
I would go for the iconic Sailor Moon pair but I think they are a better pair.

Group D-28
Kyon & Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
I really think that these two are a really good pairing even if they arn't romantic or any thing else that other pairs are.

In before the deadline!

Group D-25

Aoi Sakuraba & Kaoru Hanabishi from Ai Yori Aoshi [Video Clip]
vs.
Roy Mustang & Maes Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist [Video Clip]

Voting for: Aoi & Kaoru
Reason: Aoi & Kaoru's remarkable relationship has been detailed several times over. I'm very prepared to fight their corner in future, but I don't feel like I need to here. I honestly don't remember anything special about the relationship between Maes Hughes and Roy Mustang at all, and even if somehow I slept through all the scenes where they somehow developed great depth and strength, they're still a very minor sideline pair in their series, while Ai Yori Aoishi is all about Aoi and Kaoru's relationship, past present and future.

Group D-26
Nana “Hachiko” Komatsu & Nana Ozaki from Nana [Video Clip]
vs.
*Shana & Yuji Sakai from Shakugan no Shana [Video Clip]
vs.
*San & Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke [Video Clip]

Voting for: Nana Oosaki and Nana Komatsu
Reason: Absolute no brainer, these two are the only strong pair in this match. San and Ashitaka are pretty weak, even by Ghibli standards, and Shana and Yuji have had plenty of people questioning their strength since round 1, which is enough to convince me they don't stand even close to a pair who have a great dynamic, a powerful relationship that is the absolute core of a very emotional series.

Group D-27

*Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon [Video Clip]
vs.
*Rihoko “Rico” & Masane Amaha from Witchblade [Video Clip]
vs.
Kaoru Kamiya & Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin [Video Clip]

Voting for: Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask
Reason: This has been a bit of an agonising decision, as I'm unfortunately unfamiliar with 2 out of the 3 pairings, and not currently on a connection fast enough to stream video, it seems, having tried to watch Masane & Rihoko's clip. I'm afraid to say I lost patience with my rubbish connection (took roughly 2 hours to get about a third of it), and what I saw only showed blind devotion, not necessarily a healthy parent/child relationship. Which leaves me with The RK pair who've had great support thus far and the Sailor Moon pair; though there's plenty of arguments that say they help each other to grow, the same is true of Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask. Sailor Moon at the end of the series is a different person from Sailor Moon at the beginning, and a lot of that is Tuxedo Mask's support. I'm going to have to side with preference, and stick with Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask.

Group D-28

Ginji Amano & Ban Mido from GetBackers [Video Clip]
vs.
*Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima from His & Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) [Video Clip]
vs.
*Kyon & Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya [Video Clip]

Voting for: Kyon & Haruhi
Reason: Though it's clear that Ban & Ginji have a strong bond, all 3 of these pairings have a strong bond, and in terms of dynamic, theirs was the least engaging to me. As for the re-match between these two powerhouses, my feelings haven't changed, and I'm lazy, so I'm just going to re-post them, as I think the points I made last time are still valid.

In the last round, I wrote:

About Kare Kano, the problem is, this isn't a manga tournament, it's an anime tournament. So even though I know exactly how strong and incredible Yukino & Arima can be, their anime incarnations are not. By the end of Kare Kano, a huge void between them had appeared - a void which Yukino failed to notice, and Arima deliberately does not bridge. Arima still has what he perceives to be a 'darkness' within him, that he fully intends to keep from Yukino at all costs. He isn't going to show her how intensely possessive he feels, or that his 'other self' still torments him. He's tied himself up so tightly that he doesn't want her to see this side of him for fear of losing her - but that's not the balanced sunshine and rainbows relationship Yukino believes she's a part of.

Of the two of them, only Yukino changed - Arima loosened up a bit, but the massive emotional damage from his abusive childhood wasn't made all better by opening up to Yukino - he's still the tightly wound honour student. Yukino peeled off a lot of the masks, but she still never got all the way to Arima's real face. Even though all they had great development up until that point, by the end, their relationship is not healthy at all. She is oblivious to the fact she's being completely shut out by him, and mentally he clings to her possessively, (while outwardly playing the role of the perfect supportive boyfriend) even though he has no intention of opening up to her the way she opens up to him. The instability of their relationship at the point their series fails them, is what fails them for me.

Haruhi and Kyon's relationship is really just beginning, and because their relationship has never been a dynamic which is full of weighty emotions, the flashes you do get are more precious because of it. Kyon & Haruhi need each other, and not just in a or-else-the-world-will-be-destroyed sort of a way. From the beginning, Kyon is drawn to Haruhi; and he sticks around and puts up with her capricious nature because of this. He complains, but it's his involvement in Haruhi's hurricane that gives him everything he's always craved, not just literally, but in the sense that he gets to be a part of exciting events - people who long for the humdrum don't spend years of their life thinking about aliens. Kyon needs Haruhi's madness just as much as she needs his common sense to keep her grounded. On screen, they have an unrivalled chemistry. No, in relationship development terms, they're not as strong as Arima & Yukino, but their story is just beginning, and their series ends with their relationship starting to grow, not with their relationship falling apart.

Voting for: Aoi and Kaoru.
Reason: Their love and support. Their devotion to the other.

vs.
*Shana & Yuji Sakai from Shakugan no Shana [Video Clip]
vs.
*San & Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke [Video Clip]

Voting for: The Nanas
Reason: others comments.

Group D-27

*Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon [Video Clip]
vs.
*Rihoko “Rico” & Masane Amaha from Witchblade [Video Clip]
vs.
Kaoru Kamiya & Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin [Video Clip]

Voting for: Kaoru and Kenshin
Reason: Other's comments. I know very little of all three pairs.

Group D-28

Ginji Amano & Ban Mido from GetBackers [Video Clip]
vs.
*Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima from His & Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) [Video Clip]
vs.
*Kyon & Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya [Video Clip]

Voting for: Arima and Yukino.
Reason: Because each had a huge impact in the life of the other, made the other want to strive to be better. I think they're the strongest pair.

Group D-25

Aoi Sakuraba & Kaoru Hanabishi from Ai Yori Aoshi [Video Clip]
vs.
Roy Mustang & Maes Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist [Video Clip]

Going with Aoi Sakuraba & Kaoru Hanabishi here. Mainly because I just don't think Roy Mustang & Maes Hughes are that strong of a duo or even if they qualify as one? Their screen time together is somewhat limited, so it's hard to get a good feel for their deep friendship.

Group D-26
Nana “Hachiko” Komatsu & Nana Ozaki from Nana [Video Clip]
vs.
*Shana & Yuji Sakai from Shakugan no Shana [Video Clip]
vs.
*San & Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke [Video Clip]

I like Shana & Yuji Sakai a lot, but their "great" duoness is questionable at best. With San & Ashitaka, there really isn't a lot there. There is just the one movie and for most of it they are more or less enemies. Nana & Nana win this one. Although I haven't seen much of the series they definitely start out on the right foot and look to put up strong competition for the AYA pair.

Group D-27

*Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon [Video Clip]
vs.
*Rihoko “Rico” & Masane Amaha from Witchblade [Video Clip]
vs.
Kaoru Kamiya & Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin [Video Clip]

I gonna have to say Kaoru Kamiya & Kenshin Himura. I don't think they are a strong duo, but against this competition they easily win. Sailor Moon like I've said in the past is, as always, quite laughable and hard to take seriously. As for Rihoko “Rico” & Masane Amaha, I kinda see what Key is saying, but I can't get past the fact that their relationship seems to be only a mother daughter bond and not much else.

Group D-28

Ginji Amano & Ban Mido from GetBackers [Video Clip]
vs.
*Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima from His & Her Circumstances (Kare Kano) [Video Clip]
vs.
*Kyon & Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya [Video Clip]

This is a tough one. All three pairs put forth a strong showing. I'll have to place Ginji Amano & Ban Mido a close third. I was going to vote for Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima because from what little I have seen of Kare Kano, they appear to be a very interesting and engaging couple. But after having read many of the previous voter comments and reflecting back on the many excellent scenes in TMoHS I can't help but vote for Kyon & Haruhi Suzumiya. They may not be a great and amazing romantic couple, but they worked very well as a comedic team and certainly needed each other to make the series as great as it was.

Group D-25
Voting for: Aoi Sakuraba & Kaoru Hanabishi from Ai Yori Aoshi
Reason: Though I haven't seen the series, I'm convinced that these two are the stronger duo from what I've read about them. I never really considered Roy and Maes a "duo" in my interpretation of the definition.

Group D-26
Voting for: Nana & Hachiko from NANA
Reason: This was the easiest group in the bunch. The two make a strong duo and they even have the same name! Very Happy

Group D-27
Voting for: Masane Amaha & Rico from Witchblade
Reason: Definitely the hardest choice. I'm not at all familiar with Masane and Rico, but others' arguments have convinced me enough. I know the other duos all too well, but I'm finding myself not as enthusiastic about voting for either.

Group D-28
Voting for: Yukino Miyazawa & Souichiro Arima from His & Her Circumstances
Reason: Also based on other arguments. I'd really like to see this series eventually because of all the things I've heard about this duo. I'd've probably voted for Haruhi and Kyon otherwise. =/

Edit: Thanks, Lydia. That's what I get for copying and pasting everything. Razz

Yes, a Witchblade/Ai Yori Aoshi cross-over would've been strange indeed. . .

Round 3 Group D is now closed.

Exact results can be found here. To summarize briefly: D-28 proved fairly competitive but ultimately decisive for Yukino/Arima in a surprising turn-around from last round, while the contests in the other three subgroups were never in doubt; Aoi/Kaoru, the two Nanas, and Kaoru/Kenshin all posted strong wins. As with the last two groups, this one weeded out the weaker performers and those without sufficient popularity, leaving only a list of solid contenders behind.

Next up is Round 4, aka the “Sweet Sixteen.” Here’s a few interesting stats about our Sweet Sixteen competitors before we get started:

Primary Type of Relationship:
Romantic – 8 duos
Friends – 4
Coworkers/Partners – 2
Familial – 1
Alien Bonded Pair – 1

Round 4 Power Rankings:
1. Elric brothers, 88.9% of possible votes.
2. Kurau/Christmas, 85.2%
3. Two Nanas, 84.8%
4. Rosette/Chrono, 82.7%
5. Batou/Motoko, 80.2%
6. Rakka/Reki, 80%
7. Aoi/Kaoru, 79.7%
8. Ayato/Haruka, 78.7%
9. Sousuke/Kaname, 77.3%
10. Belldandy/Keiichi, 74.1%
11. Shinichi/Nodame, 73.3%
12. Kaoru/Kenshin, 70.9%
13. Jinto/Lafiel, 69.1%
14. Yuji/Marlene, 64.2%
15. Takumi/Ayumi, 58%
16. Yukino/Arima, 54.4%

Mean: 75.1%

Also of note, Yukino/Arima is the only duo to advance to the Sweet Sixteen despite a tie in a previous round.

Next group will be posted momentarily.

Also of note, you can now click on the green colored capital V's in the main bracket to view past video clips.
