The only thing I want to know is, where the heck did you get a legit English sub of this, Zac, and can I get one?

I caught this one (er... twice) in theaters, and I have to say I think the review emphasizes Evangelion the Phenomenon more-so than the movie itself. Is it the TV series? Nope. But there's a lot to be said about this film. Some quick points:
1. It's GORGEOUS. Very well-directed and with superb color choices. The eruptions of blood, for example, are amazing. It's good to see the series get a chance to be 're-done' with such great art all-across the board. (Yes, there are eruptions of blood) 2. The Music. Utada Hikaru's ending theme is great, and I believe it was the best-selling single of last year. 3. Accessibility: I thought a lot of the dead-weight was gone. True, this may affect some of the character development, but IMHO I remember that part of Evangelion sucking up a few too many episodes for my liking... and hell, I like Godard. I definitely think this one is worth a spin, if not a buy... |

I dunno, I remembering watching Eva back in my freshman year, and having to force myself to watch a lot of it.
That's why I'm trying to sell the boxset I have. I'll probably pick these new versions up once they hit the U.S. |

Sad to hear that they do an outright explanation from the get go. I loved the piece-together-the-clues aspect of Evangelion, a feature of a number of series that I've enjoyed. The way you describe it, it sounds unpleasantly like the RahXephon movie, which was a complete let-down after the series.

I 've seen the movie already. I'm amazed that Gainax was able to spam for other companies throughout the film (Dortios, Asahi... for example), but couldn't getting around their butt to get Shinji's tape recorder updated with technology of the year 2000 and onward. Give the poor guy a CD player at least. =/

it's pretty much a direct adaption of the first few episodes of Evangelion. no more no less. the only difference is spoiler[Kaoru is introduced early]

I really hope the original english actors do this one. spoiler[I can't wait to see what they do with kaoru now that they have more time to develop him. (please just don't make it some borderline yaoi fest like some fan girls want)]

To me, it never felt more than a compilation movie, except that the animation was entirely new. Zac summed up my feelings on this movie perfectly. Like a lot of people, the only slight interest I really have in this movie series is to see what they will do with "Evangelion 4.0: Let's Hope Third Time's The Charm And They Actually Make A Good Ending".

I'm not sure if people have been watching the same movie I did. Whilst describing Operation Yashima as one of 'the boring parts' should be a capital offence, a lot of the boring parts of the series were cut from the movie, namely a lot of Shinji's whining. Yes, a fair amount was kept in (enough to show that he is a deeply disturbed character), but he's a lot more level-headed by the end of the film then he ever is in the series.
And that's the crux of it: Rebuild may look like it at first glance, but it is NOT just a remake of the series. Character development seems rushed because it had such a glacial pace in the original, and by the end of the film has advanced in a different direction to the series, and is only going to diverge further. Everyone is more overtly relying on Shinji this time around, you could almost think that their 'performances' have become more polished, lending credence to the world-reset theory spoiler[in addition to the extra not-a-lilith in Terminal Dogma, the seas of blood on earth, and the blood-spatter on the moon, and Kaworu's presence and knowledge of events]. |

The review was wrong about several things. If you look at the character designs side-by-side, they have indeed been changed a bit. The best comparison you can see is Rei's smiling scene compared to that of the original series and Death.
The backgrounds and music are all redone as well. The reviewer said they were the same as before, but the backgrounds are much more detailed and in many places quite different. The music, while usually remixing older scores, is played by a better orchestra. The only song that was really pretty much the same as its decade-old counterpart was Decisive Battle, which did also have a little more percussion. Furthermore, it's not necessarily that they're being a lot more upfront this time, it's that the mysteries aren't necessarily the same. For example, did you notice that all the parts about Second Impact's coverup were removed, as well as the scenes that seem to imply whose soul is in Unit 01? |
