I'm REALLY hoping this is just a phase, and there's a good end to it. Is what she's saying true about the problem of actually advertising the Strawberry label? Granted I did noticed some sort of lack of memorabilia from them. |

If yuri isnt popular enough to sell its not popular enough to sell. I tend to find that most american manga readers (that IV noticed anyways) and girls, and most girls arent interested in girl on girl action. They want yaoi, not yuri.

I suppose in general that's true. But I think there's just as much of a chance of yuri taking off. I prefer Yuri to Yaoi. And I know many who like it that way, too. |

There has been some speculation that Seven Seas' problems run deeper than just their yuri line.
--- As for the appeal of yuri - I'm not really interested in fanservice for hormonal otaku but I'm quite happy to read the more literary josei stuff that can appeal to a broader audience (of either gender) like 12 Days and Blue. |

Funny you say that because there's quite of bit yuri (especially ones compiled from Yuri Hime) that are read more by females according to this probably because of their "shoujo" look and the odd turn of events of Marimite becoming popular. So there is something for the girls in which they'll eat up.

I think that the big problem with yuri is that it's too shoujo for guys and too weird for girls. Average guys don't like romance, harem comedy isn't about romance, it's about male fantasies of poligamy and domination; and of course fanservice. Yuri mangas have a clearly "shoujo" look and when they are adapted to anime, they become even more shoujo. For example, Strawberry panic manga is basicaly an ecchi comedy, in the other hand, SP anime has some comedy and ecchi but mostly is about romance. Most guys found tears and sweet words boring, I'm a guy too and part of me thinks that way.
Yuri is related with fanservice but most yuris don't have it. Usually there are few kisses in yuri, Marimite is the most known yuri and all the relationships are ambigous, personally I don't considered it yuri, I think that it's only a shoujo. Audience identificate lesbian romance with lesbian porn and they aren't the same. Yaoi is way more explicite than yuri but nobody considered it fanservice. |

The problems have been happening for almost a year now, this is just another in a long line of incidents.
Several titles are on unofficial hold already, as in, officially they're just waiting for reprinting, but there's no date been given just a vague 'sometime'. They've tried to blame anything and everything to try and keep a facade of not being in trouble. However for about the last six months or so now several distributors and other market place professionals have all been saying similar stuff, SSE is in trouble financially. This is being reinforced by the silence from SSE. Whenever anyone asks the question, they either ignore it, or just avoid it with a no comment reply. Okazu has it right sadly. While Yuri is a small demographic, the problem lies within the way they handle their releases. They simply publish and dead drop. They don't promote the series in any way shape or form. Unless you count the backs of their own titles. Then they whine that the titles arent selling. The other problem is with the way they treat their fans, they have a habit of alienating fans, and for small demographics like yuri, that can be devestating. To be honest, a lot of people i know don't give SSE an other year before they either cancel a tone of titles and just carry a few, merge with another company and close up shop, or simply just fold. The last being the best odds
I don't see this to be honest. I'm a guy and i enjoy a good yuri, though it depends on how it's delivered. Equally i know a lot of other guys, and girls who like yuri. Whats odd is that the titles that SSE have are good yuri titles and have a good strong following, however their expectations were just to high. Also the lack of promotion means the fans who would buy the titles son't even know they're out there unless they happen to come across a title on a book shelf. Sadly even if they do come across it and decide to pick it up, chances are they can't since early volumes of most of SSE releases are out of print with no given reprint date. |

I'm a guy too and I enjoy yuri. I'm saying "most guys", not "all guys". You know the old cliche: "Guys are tough, girls are delicate". I live in Latin America and few times I met guys who actually watch yuri (yuri hentai doesn't count), but I met many girls who watch yuri. I was surprised the first time I watched a girl looking for yuri animes, Yuri fan girls say they find this genre cute, they look more open to homosexuality than guys. But the new big trend between latin female otakus are Asian dramas, I even met girls who left anime for J-dramas. This genre has a lot of tears and sweet words but it also have a lot of pretty boys; and lately, animes are mostly aimed to guys. |
