a nice new (and very welcome) addition
it was a fun read (even if I don't care much for any of the games reviewed) also I do hope in the future you do a bit on SRW and a bit on the Phoenix Wright games |

I really enjoyed the layout and form of this column. It has the overview of the gaming industry that ANN's main page skips (for good reason, I believe) as well as a succinct review like the other column do. I'm excited to read more reviews of old games that I have never heard of!

Macross Scrambled Valkyire looks like a rip of R-Type.
(For those of you that are too young, that was one of the best arcade games ever created.) Nice column. It is something that should be a nice addition. |

This is a welcome new addition. It'll be helpful for keeping track of anime related games. The new characters for Soul Calibur look very interesting, but most likely I'm going to be spending most of my time playing as Darth Vader.

I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style of The X Button, and I have to say that paragraph linking Macross to Reagen-era politics was priceless. Witty (Keep it up!), and you covered a wide slew of games.
If this becomes weekly, definitely keep the 'old game' segment at the end, the oldest game I've ever seriously played was Diablo so its cool to find out about them in an entertaining way. Also, though this gimmick does belong to Shelf Life, you may want to consider some sort of color-coded system for the new games you preview/review so at a glance I can tell whether you loved it, hated it, or felt like saying 'meh',Which as Zac from Hey Answerman will tell you, all cool people say. |

I was already looking forward to the new Castlevania game due to the female lead and being able to explore areas outside the castle. But I'm really getting excited after seeing that trailer. It looks like it will employ some sort of grapple hook and that it will probably be significant. I'm digging the new artstyle and its definitely a huge improvement over the generic anime style of the last few titles.
I've seen little of the two most recent characters for Soul Calibur IV, but that's fine, I'll see plenty of them when I get the game. And of course, I'm looking forward to MGS4. A little over a week and I'll finally have it and a PS3... Anyway, I like the new column, I hope it will be around for a while. |

It'd be nice if the news topics linked to places where readers could find more substantial information on the items being covered when necessary - since, for example, there's a ton of new SFIV screenshots and a new trailer out there along with some hands on impressions on certain news sites. I mean, yeah, I expect most people are probably smart enough to look it up on there own if they think there's more to it than what's shown here, but it wouldn't hurt to have for those who assume that that's all there is to it.
It also seems a bit odd that you left out mention of the anime intros and endings all the characters are promised to be getting in the console version of Street Fighter IV. Or maybe you hadn't heard about that...?
Oh please no, do not do this. I much prefer it when people can draw their own conclusions from the text rather than forcing the reviewer or reader to overemphasize the bad or good parts based on some arbitrary rating system. In fact, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for not doing one of these, Todd. Anyway, not a bad column. I'm looking forward to seeing what makes an appearance in the this-old-anime-game segment. There's a lot of neat stuff worth mentioning ("neat" not necessarily meaning "actually a good game", but hey!). |

The X Button? Sony Fanboy! I'm a fan of the "Red Button" myself.
Great first entry in to the new column. Since I still have no plans on getting the PS3, at least MGS3 is something to look forward. But for now, DBZ: BL does one of the nicest looking anime game so far. |

Ooh, I've played that Macross SNES game!
I loved the music. I think it's time I gave it a second go. Interesting column, by the way. I'm so far behind on modern games it's not even funny, but if you keep throwing in retro stuff every now and then, you'll have me hooked as well. |

Kojima just stated MGS 4 is not the last one in the series, which either means more crappy Raiden games or a Snake clone. (Or are those really one in the same? ) As for Itagaki, good riddance. I want my Ninja Gaiden to be like the NES games, not like a DOA spin-off.
Edit: Also, when did Castlevania suddenly become a magical girl series? Did I miss something? And no, I don't consider Alucard to be a girl. Last edited by GATSU on Wed Jun 04, 2008 1:59 am; edited 2 times in total |

Very cool column.
I think I may buy Castle of Shikigami exclusively for the dialogue. It kinda brings me back to the "All your base are belong to us" days. |

Good job Todd. This page is welcome, for the Otaku's that do more than just collect anime.
Damn I've spent too much time at ANN.I wasn't anticipating the next release of Castlevania like I usually am.The last two on the DS,Dawn and Portrait were decent additions to the series but were way too shallow for the hardcore. The anime cut scenes and illustrations were alright in my opinion but it was missing the quality from the past.I know,IGA just keeps chasing SOTN.He'll get it one day.Just from what I've seen from the video posted had me squeeling like a fangirl.I'm so happy that Konami went back to the beautiful handpainted art style (I gotta find out who). The girls name in Order of Ecclesia is Shanoa. She's shaping up to be a badass. This glyph system looks great too. Hell yeah, something to look forward to. Every year,I play through all the Castlevania's,all the Zelda's,and sometimes the FinalFantasy's,Beginning to end.It never gets old to me.Those are a few mainstream names,I'm also into lesser known series. - Soul Caliber 4,I look forward to this but I'd wish Namco would come up with something original like they used to in the 80's.Wait,because you can knock the armor off,you think they are sexist?Well maybe. When I was younger and my aunt worked at Namco Hometec in California,She took me to her office, let me game test some crappy games, but before that I noticed a few of the females walking about ten paces, behind the some of the suits.Guess the bigwigs like to keep things traditional. - I hate to say it but,I don't think Street Fighter 4 is going to do it.Their Arika branch tried and failed horribly with EX and now Capcom goes and co develops it with Dimps (group responsible for Sonic Advance as well as an Atomiswave fighter named Rumble Fish). There are bigger and better games out now. Capcom lost it's fighting foothold when they ignored fans that wanted more VS series.Opting for more console adventure games.SNK JP was out the door,Capcom had won.Because of this/ and unfortunately for 2d fighter developers,PC fans got lucky when elecbyte was building a lightgun emulator, but created a fighting engine instead.Fans got a hold of the coding and it became what is known today as MUGEN.Why play theirs when you could make your own? Ark System Works was another group that swept up a big chunk of Capcom's fan base too.Capcom just waited too long IMO.I'm waiting for Blazblue and Battle Fantasia more than SF4.Or even SC4 for that matter. - I can't believe Itagaki-san left.DOA and Ninja Gaiden will never be the same.At least you know in the future,Tecmo games won't be as hard as they once were. - The last few Castle of Shikigami shooters were ok,nothing major, nothing that hasn't been done before.I did like the retro heads up for Time Gal though.I like the Touhou games better. There were a bunch of doujin shooters,a while back that I was playing last.Triggerheart Exelica and Karous for DC and Senko no Rondo for the Arcade, are more worth your time. - I got a week off just for Metal Gear Solid 4.I've been hardcore into metal gear, since the MSX/floppy disk days.I can't wait to get my hands on the final game(yeah right).DBZ,not so much.If it weren't such a tired and milked fighting game I would maybe look in it's general direction. They just released SM(TB3) not too long ago,I don't want another shinier version to go next to it.And the DS game"JAKE HUNTER: DETECTIVE CHRONICLES" Hell yeah, this game is finally being localized?Bout damn time. The game is really called Detective Saburo Jinguji, but who cares it finally hit our shores. - Whip out the old games bro,I too like to dust off the old Super Famicom and play some classics(every year actually)Don't bag on the SNES though,it has some of the best games ever created on it.What other games you got?Keep it coming. |

Hey wait, what?
I played that Castle of Shinigami game (or at least hte first 3 levels) on my PC about a year ago.... It was a demo that was released at Comiket 71... Was the game originally developed by some doujin game group and then bought and redeveloped by Nintendo for the wii? |
