Which do you prefer and for what reasons...?
I prefer Manga myself because I feel that anime plays out pretty slow sometimes. Also, there is the fact that you would know more of whats going on if you read the manga(in most situations). But on the other hand, there are some stories where the anime must be watched out its pure awesomeness. [EDIT: This is not an imageboard. And as Teh Rules say, do not make fake signatures.~Zalis] |

This strikes me as odd. If anything people always complain that anime is too rushed. I generally prefer anime. I feel that assuming that they do a decent job on it the added atmosphere and immersion make up for a little less depth in places. It's a little tough to say though really. There aren't actually many cases where I've read both the manga and the anime. It's usually one or the other. Also in the cases where I have might likely be exceptions. For instance so much of what I like about Hellsing was atmosphere. The anime helped that a lot. Trigun takes a relatively different approach in the anime than in the manga. In my opinion the anime's method was a lot better. |

I'm going to be rather boring here and say that it all just depends. I find some stories to play out well in manga, while others really need to be animated to give them that "special something".
However, given the choice, I generally prefer to read manga because, not only can I control how quickly or slowly I get through the story, but I've always been a big fan of reading. |

I prefer manga, I understand the story a lot more, I can go at my own pace and the artwork is generally more consistent.

Oh yeah? What about Gantz (the Anime)? It was VERY slow, to the point of being utterly ridiculous. To the point that an awesome premise and smart characterisation was effectively ruined. I concede though that the endings of Anime are often rushed. It's like the plot goes nowhere for 20 episodes or so, then the staff urgently throw in an ending that doesn't tie up all the loose ends. Even Anime like Gundam SEED, where the best stretch of episodes is arguably the last third of the series (34-49), suffered from a rushed ending. In Gundam SEED's case, episode 50 tied up little, and the series could have done with one or two more episodes. On a tangent here, I think it awfully strange that (of all the Anime I have watched), only one had finished the story before the last episode. That series is of course s-CRY-ed, which wrapped up the plot by episode 24. This made for a very interesting (and relaxing) final episode, which consisted of one last big fight to please the fanbase. |

I prefer anime, maybe cause I am lazy and it gives me laziness to read the manga
But, seriously, I prefer anime because shows better the scenes, there is more movement and the histories of figth are transmitted better. Could be that that reasons aren´t convincing, but is my opinion. It´s all that my level of English can do too

Well, it really depends on what you are talking about. Sometimes an anime adaptation tries to cram too much material into too few episodes. But then you have shows like Naruto, DBZ, and Bleach as well as shorter shows that simply more episodes than they need for the story they are telling. |

I don't read manga, but I watch a whole ton of anime.
There are various reasons for this but in essence it boils down to the fact that anime stimulates me more. The combination of sound and sight makes for a more engrossing experience for me. If I want to read something, I generally pick up a Terry Pratchett book or somesuch... That's what I want when I'm in the frame of mind to read something. It's tricky to explain. Another advantage I find to watching anime over manga is the opportunity, however passively, to learn a new language. Sure, fansubs can be misleading and translations can be hit and miss... But for picking up day-to-day general lingo, I've found anime to be useful. Again, it's far from an exact science, because there's no structure with which to learn correct enunciation, grammar and dialect... But little by little, I learn new parts of the Japanese language every new anime I watch. Again with the aural theme, I find anime soundtracks can be wonderful too. They can be terrible, and potentially ruin an otherwise good scene, that risk exists also... It's a bit of a double edged sword. Obviously anime has it's downsides... poor animation, pacing issues, ethical and moral issues with subbing/downloading etc. Plus, many stories in he past have only been truly resolved in the manga, my favourite anime Kare Kano being a prime example of this. Despite not providing any convincing arguments for or against, I still prefer anime!

I'd MUCH rather watch anime because the pictures move, and are in color, and have sound effects, and voices for the characters, and visual effects and things. It's much better than black and white on paper and provides for a more fun experience that seems more real. I do read the occasional manga though usually as a supliment to the anime.

I'm a big fan of reading books, but I've always found reading comics of any sort to be rather irritating, and that includes manga. The format as a whole feels like a budget intermediate step between full text and full animation; the way I see it, it's not much different than reading storyboards. Either let me picture the whole scene in my head, or show it to me in its entirety; don't make me interpolate between static snapshots of it.

Okay, deep breaths there buddy. I'm sure there are exceptions. I'm just saying that when these debates usually come up I usually hear people saying the opposite. Of course, HitokiriShadow raises a very good point about shounen anime. |

The enjoyment of reading is as fast pace as the mind could handle. Their are more of the story involve than most of its anime counterparts, but the readers involvement includes sight and the creative mind to fill the other senses.
I mean, with text involving loud bang! interprets to the mind, which is sound. A reader could imagine there is a fast pace music involving in a car chase as that person reads page to page. I like reading, it immerses me to get engage. The entertainment is their in mind, but its temporary and sometimes cannot be shared by anyone else unless its already in the book. I also read the manga counterpart to fill my desire to know more about the story or ease my confusion from the anime. Animation is fun and entertaining to watch. I like it because it invloves the two senses: sound and sight. Sometimes you can have the sense of touch as well, when a person put their surround system bass so loud that he/she can feel the rumble. The advantage of it is that I can see the action in front of me in motion (unlike still pictures), plus the movement is also aided by music. Entertaining as it seems, stipulations also occur more from anime fans than the manga counterpart. In anime, people can disagree whether it was a good choice to have the sound in particular scene, if there was too much action involve in the beginning, or something else. The story could be a bit rushed or the story didn't full-fill the needs of the fans, but grasping the joy of watching what I have read in manga and portraying it in TV, is awesome enough. If anyone knows me best. I have always like to understand the story whatever I watch or read. If thats the case ya, its a safe bet that I prefer manga. |

Anyways, I don't prefer (sp?) one over the other. Some days I feal like reading the manga instead of watching the anime because I want to take my time and look at the artwork, etc. Although somedays I enjoy watching the anime because, quite frankly, I don't want to read

I saw this topic a few days ago and skipped over it as I'd never read a Manga and therefore couldn't add anything constructive. However, I finally caved and picked up Genshiken Vol. 1 as the Anime is one of only two I've rated a masterpiece and heard the manga version was also superb.
It was an interesting experience, and definitely one I plan to repeat when I buy the subsequent volumes. The biggest draw for me was the artwork, in that the backgrounds and general environment were highly detailed. I'm a fast reader, but took a lot of time to simply admire the artwork, soak in the ambiance, and take it at a much slower pace then I usually get my entertainment. So clearly, going your own pace in Manga is a big draw for me. I've never felt rushed in Anime before but this may cast it in a different light. The storyline was largely unaffected and stayed with the Anime, which really helped in the transition between mediums. I'm sure not all Manga are like this, but I enjoyed seeing the same story from a different perspective. I found it surprising that the characters expressions, specifically how they reacted to surprising and embarrassing stimuli, wasn't diminished at all despite being in a static form. If anything, I felt more connected to the characters and their plight. Overall, I'd have to say that although until yesterday I'd never read a Manga, I don't have a preference. I'm sure as others have stated some series work especially well for one format or the other, and as long as it has good artwork and a storyline I enjoy I'm sure it'll be fun in both. For the near future though, I think I'll continue test-driving Anime before hitting the Manga, but we'll see how it goes. P.S. ANN really needs to make it so Anime and Manga aren't typo's. It's funny and frustrating at the same time! EDIT: HitokiriShadow was absolutely correct, I tried a test post with IE7 and Anime and Manga were fine, my mistake.
