I would say Spike Spiegel, but thats just typical...hmm...best character ever...ahh, Gigantor, nothing beats a giant robot (with a cheesy theme song)...

An unbiased listing of the greatest anime characters in the history of the industry?
Such is both an impossible and ridiculously half-baked notion. Now perhaps if this were a "what is your favourite character in all of anime?" thread, it would work. But we've had too many "favourite" threads as it is lately.

I'm not biased, Legato is simply the best!

A nice way to get thread counts up I suppose is all that can really be said for the recent flare up. Though all they really serve to do is cause you to take a bit more time to sift through the spam before reading any real threads of interest.
However, since I'm posting anyway I figure i might as well endorse my favourite character, Asaba from Kareshi Kanojyo No Jiyo (he's a great friend and a humorous ladies man all at once).

Lupin the Third. Not my favorite character, but easily one with the greatest name recognition across Japanese and foreign markets.... either him or Doraemon.
Doraemon-yaki are the best....

I must say I'm definetly a fan of the original Knight Sabers from Bubblegum Crisis 2032 or perhaps Tenchi because he is just such a classic character.

I didn't understand a word of that first sentence. And the second one just made me laugh.

Giant robots? posh. Old school or new, no one tops the world's favorite ronin Godai. He's a classic because everyone can relate to him on some level. You don't have to have special powers or drive mechs to be interesting.
As far as name rognition, Totoro anyone? The furry Ghibli mascot is instantly recognizable in Japan, and also popular in America (somewhat, I see a fair number of Totoro plushies in car windows).
